Ha! I've got this one.
May, 1968, bitchezzzz... The same year and month that the NYPD launched the famed SOU and started taking requests from store owners.
That would make the hot set up a 4" heavy barrel M10 S&W loaded with Lee Juras' 110-grain SWCJHP Super-Vels doing 1,125 out of the M10 (per Jim Cirillo from his GB&G book). I'm sure there was other awesome out there, but hard to argue with the date line up, the SOU, and someone like Mr. Cirillo.

1962 was the first year of the Remington 700. The AR15 had been invented, but the M14 was still the issued long arm.

Also born in '65 so whatever Dagga said.
IF forced to pick, I'd go with a Colt New Frontier in 45 Colt. One of the best looking revolvers of all time.

1976. I adored this gun as a kid (because Snake Eyes of G.I. Joe...) - yeah, I know, wrong forum....

1977. Steyer AUG was the state of the art. However, I spent most of my childhood pining for a more elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

And in Nineteen-Hundred-and-Seventy-One, the Lord did send forth a Prophet of Fortune to inquire as to your luck...

I was born in 1975, so my mind turns to the CZ 75. I'm not fluent in revolver, but a Colt D frame probably would have been near the top of the list for actual carry. CZ's were pretty hard to find in in this country for quite a while.

1972. My carry gun would probably have been a Detective Special or Agent, but maybe I'd have a 2" S&W model 10 or 12, or maybe a 60 on the outside. I'd probably have been a common working man, whether I was a "real shooter" or not, and so would have had one center fire handgun, but if I'd been working The Job and allowed my own gun, it would probably have been a Model 15 or 19, even if I pined after a Python. My dad was issued a 4" Model 10 that year.
Other than that, I'd have had a .22, likely a Ruger Single Six or semiauto, but I'd likely have drooled over a Diamondback or a K22.
A Wnchester Mkdel 70 in .270 would have been hot, but I'd probably have had a Marlin or Wnchester .30-30, or a sporterized 1903-A3 like Grandpa's. A Remington 870 Wingmaster or Winchester Model 12, and a Marlin 39a would round it all out.
