Week 387: Modified LAPD D-Platoon Qual

Start Position: Shooter’s choice of ready, holstered, or concealed
Rounds Fired: 36

Set up the B8 repair center as the scoring zone for the body and the 3x5 as the scoring zone for the head. Feel free to affix them to a silhouette target if desired, but those will be the scoring zones for the drill. You may choose a start position of ready, holstered, or concealed, to comport with your range’s rules and adjust the difficulty level of the course of fire.

25 yards – Shoot 2 body, 4 second par, repeat twice (three total reps)
15 yards – Shoot 2 body, 3 second par, repeat twice (three total reps)
10 yards – Shoot 2 body 1 head, 3.5 second par, repeat once (two total reps)
7 yards - Shoot 2 body 1 head, 3 second par, repeat once (two total reps)
5 yards - Shoot 2 body 1 head, 2.5 second par, repeat once (two total reps)
3 yards - Shoot 2 body 1 head, 2 second par, repeat once (two total reps)

Score the B8 repair center using the scoring rings. A hit to the 3x5 is worth 10 points and a miss is worth zero. Overtime shots count as zero points. There are 360 possible points.

So this is the LAPD "D" Platoon Qual "A" less the last 14 shots done on the move (not included on this version). Bolke and I have shot this for years during our training sessions and it's a great course. Qual A is properly shot with all starts from a proper low ready and that's how I ran it. If you have a shooter who can stay above 90% on this, they are very much good to go.

10 - dropped a damn head shot and lost 10 points; also shot two nines

I found where DB had posted about it here and lightfighter, while browsing old threads, as a modified version with an 8" circle and 3x5. I liked the sound of it and since ammo is tight right now, I've only been doing 50 rounds of centerfire at the end of a long rimfire session to affirm I'm not letting my grip go etc...I thought this made a great skills check that covered a lot of the bases.

I had a stack of b8's and 3x5's so it made sense to include those and made it easy to track small gains/losses over time rather than hit/miss. I've been running it from the holster and my last two runs were 326 and 308 so plenty of room for improvement.

I felt that for my needs the last 14 rounds could be put to better use and allow a bit of leeway if I need to do something else in my session so I omitted that portion. I appreciate you and db bringing drills like this to light so we can play with and modify them to our needs, great stuff.

Hard times call for the bulk of my practice to be rimfire so I ran it with my .22 conversion before running it centerfire. While my times are faster with the .22, I can still make the pars from the holster with centerfire, so I don't think I'm hurting myself too much running it rimfire. My points are only slightly better on the far strings and equal or worse inside 10 as compared to my previous run with the p09 centerfire. If it weren't for the malf, my rimfire time would have been down 3 from my last p09 time centerfire.

While the shadow 2 is just a fun gun for me, I only ran it today to get it out of my system before putting it away and focusing on carry guns only due to limited ammo. It doesn't like the steel cased ammo as far as light strikes go. Luckily I only had one light strike which was at 3 yards and cost me 10 points. I dropped 2 at 25 for 20 points down right away. Both were SA shots pulled right. Had 1 3x5 miss at 7.

This thing drives slow, feels like steering a big old boat like an old cadillac as it is slow to respond and i simply called a bad shot as I pulled the trigger, not being even close to the 3x5. Simply a poor performance on my part. So an easy 40 points down due to poor performance of both me and the gun ala the light strike. I am going to play around with it next year (grips, dot, apex kit) but until then it's going back in the safe and I am going to stick strictly to my m&p's until the ammo situation comes back a touch toward normal.

Shot from ready on lit dept. indoor range, with a coworker after a short warmup.
328 out of 360 points or 91%.
This was a bit sobering; I slung one off the B8 repair at 25 yards, and to add insult to injury, 2(!)7s. I did not look at each string-will next time. At 10 yards, snatched a head shot into the “earlobe” at 10 yards. With the possible exception of the 2 second, 3 yard string, times are certainly reasonable. I was comfortably under par on just about every string.
I like this drill, and will have at it again from the ready, and perhaps from an open holster. Will work harder at 25.

I was doing great until the three yard line. I'm still learning to run a dot very close at speed. On the first run I didn't drive the gun high enough and called a miss. The last run I didn't drive the gun hard enough and went overtime. That left an automatic 20 points on the table. Even with those points down, it was my 2nd best score to date, with those points it would have been my PR. I'm digging running this after a day of rimfire as confirmation that I'm still running a center fire decently.

Dobbs says 90%, so we'll go with that - 324 then.

Our SWAT qual demands 90 percent performance to be considered for selection.

It's much much easier than this course of fire.

I would doubt there would be too many of my coworkers that could shoot this to 90 percent as the time restraints at 25 yards would blow many minds here. The failure drills would also be tough on many. Missing that 3x5 would be the norm here and not the exception.

I ran it from holstered in my duty pistol. I would think that even letting the cops here run it from "ready gun/low ready" the scores would be abysmal due to the 25 yard line scares the urine out of the troops. Hits off paper (Q target) and "my gun shoots left" are very much a thing a qualifications.

I think I'd be happy if I could routinely make 90 or better on this.....particularly "cold" and from holstered.

I like this drill more and more and wish that I had more 9mm on hand to play around with it.

I shot this this morning with some 22s. A S&W M&P 22 Compact and a S&W 43c. All from low ready. I kept losing track of how many reps while I was trying to manage ammo. :( I think I had a 309 with the Compact. It would have been a 315 if I had used the full B-8 repair instead of the printed one. :) I drug out a box of bulk Federal from the Obama administration to shoot. It doesn't hit exactly like the Mini Mags I prefer, but I though I'd save them. I had some high hits. When I was done I noticed that the rear sight screw on the Compact was backing out. I'll try this again, maybe with a real gun. The 43c did well from 15 yards in, but that bead sight is hard to shoot at distance.

I'm afraid I'm pretty low on the totem pole here.

The department trains to pass the qual. Earlier this year I did get to attend the one shooting course that was offered and they had some good drills (Pat Mac stuff) and I pray they keep advancing in a good direction.

There's a couple of us though that are going to incorporate this and Qual B in our future training.

Wayne, or anyone who would know the answer, why a whole qual shot from low ready? Is it because a SWAT team is a more proactive unit and as such more likely to have their guns out of the holster when the crap happens? Or some other reason that I am not smart enough to see? (quite likely)

Average run at 25, a miss screwed it up. Best score to date at fifteen. The lower hits at ten were great but the miss on the 3x5 made it my worst yet. Seven yards was solid. At five I am happy with the shooting but was a bit slow and had an OT hit that I'm not too concerned about. I showed improvement at three as far as getting all my hits and being under time. Still enjoying this as my centerfire check to the rimfire schedule I'm running until next year when I see what the ammo situation is.

While I lack the consistency to hit 90%, I'm consistent in my foul ups putting me in the 30x range regularly.

Thanks for clarifying this - could you post the complete Qual B standards? I seem to recall the Qual B times are the Qual A standards with a second added for the draw, but wasn't sure. (E.g. the 7 yard standard goes from 3 seconds to 4 seconds with a holster start).

For what it's worth, the most recent revision to the FBI qualification added a number of ready position starts, whereas the older versions of the qualification had all starts from the holster. I understand the reasoning is that in most shootings the Agent had the firearm already drawn, and the decision was to make the qualification reflect this trend. Of course, this reasoning is debatable, and the change had its share of detractors.

Most of my points were dropped at the 25 along with a couple of called fliers at the 15. (one 7, one 8) All times were a fair amount under par. I would really love to get where I could shoot this all in the black, which obviously means more work at the 25.

I shot this twice today wearing full “raid gear:” duty belt, body armor, and helmet. I shot from the low ready as described by Wayne Dobbs. I was using a G19-5 with Ameriglo Bold sights.

The first attempt I did it as my first shooting of the day. Things went poorly. I missed the B8 4/6 times at 25y (all slightly low and left of the 8.5”x11” paper). I also missed the paper once completely at 15y. Then I missed both head shots at the 10y line and one at the 7y line. Final score was 243/360.

I tried again at the end of my range session and did much better after being warmed up. I still missed the B8 completely once at 25y and still missed a head shot at 10y but the final score was 304/360.

As usual, I was awful at making the best use of the available time. I shot each 25y string under 3s and almost every 15y string under 2s. I have a difficult time gauging time when I’m shooting and I’m always worried that I will take too long so I rush.

Historically, I've had the same issue. I just have to focus hard on doing what is necessary with shooting for the hits rather than the time and being ok with having a hit over time as opposed to a miss under par. While it's rather obvious while talking about it, I find that in practice we all want to hit the par regardless and it took a mental switch to actually apply it. And I have to remind myself throughout the drill/practice session when I start to slip toward a bad rep chasing times etc...

That being said, it's still something I struggle with and easily find myself slipping back if I don't monitor myself mentally.

I know what I’ll be working on during my next practice session.

Tried this drill today, and I liked it. Shooting a Walther P99AS from low ready, first shot of each 2-3 shot string DA. I impressed the heck out of myself at 25, keeping 5 of 6 in the black and dropping one low into the 7 ring, well under par time. I actually did better at 25 than at 15, as I think I was rushing my shots a little more at 15. I screwed up when I moved up to 10 yards though, and shot 3 strings instead of 2 at both 10 and 7, so I compensated by doing only one each at 5 and 3 to maintain the proper overall round count. I ended up missing the 3x5 twice with a couple of low shots. I had three others that cut the bottom of the card with one that just just barely smudged the edge but I'm counting it ;). I managed to make par on every string. I did a quick tabulation of my "unofficial" score and ended up with 307 (85 percent), although my course of fire was a little bastardized so it doesn't really count. I was encouraged enough by my performance to want to keep working at it. I think 90 percent is a realistic goal for me with some more practice.

Some folks have asked about D Platoon's Qual B. I'm not going to hijack this thread by posting it. If you want it, please PM me with an email address.

This is an awesome qual. I shot it with my PX4CC from low ready and failed, but really liked the emphasis on failure drills and shooting cadence at different ranges.

Two of the missed shots in the neckline area were the very first string at 25 - a distance where the CAP sights can be challenging for me, often throwing shots high. The rest of the misses were head shots I pulled low. I also subtracted 10 points each for overtime shots at 15 and 5.

Overall, I need to work on marksmanship fundamentals for the longer ranges and faster transitions to accurate head shots at the middle distances.

Finished the session shooting the Five Yard Roundup a couple of times. The second run was a 94 - probably a tie for my best ever - and this was with my .38 LCR. Happy to call it a night on that note.

Ran this drill twice this week. First time was with a 92FS w/.22 conversion kit. Second time was with my “M9A2”

I all were shot from low ready position and I was able to make all par times.

Using the .22 my overall score was a 281 with 6 misses.

Switching to 9mm and the score was a 318 (328 if Santa Clause is scoring Head Shots).

Kind of surprised at the delta between the two runs. My “M9A2” has a Langdon trigger but my .22 gun shoots pretty well as my misses were clearly misses and outside them the grouping is good. Maybe it is just my first run but I think it might be due to a subconscious willingness to be sloppy when shooting .22.

I shot this a few times yesterday.

S&W M&P 22 Compact. I used SK Pistol Match ammo and adjusted the sights some more. I now have it driving the dot like my Glocks. I didn't score it. Nothing to brag about on the Net.

G-19 2 tries. 301 and a 307. The trigger on my G-19 is much better than the M&P Compact. I threw the first 2 shots at 25. Sort of the surprise break we hear about. :)

CZ-P01 2 tries. 311 and a 307.

All my tries had shots off the B-8 at 25 and I pulled some 3x5 hits low. Everything was shot from ready.

I have ran this pretty regularly since this thread. I have a fair amount of data for myself on various guns and I run it both from the ready (the HiTS fellas talked about the importance of this drill on either Weems podcast or On Duty/Off Duty but I can't remember, and I started also running it from the ready after listening to that conversation) and the holster.

The best I have done from the holster is a 240 but generally getting the 90% that Wayne mentioned earlier in this thread is a challenge. Having met that today, despite having two misses at 25, with a new gun on the first range session with it, is pretty good for where my skillset lies currently. Definitely one of my favorite tests to run and I don't see that stopping any time soon. Definitely give this one a shot if you haven't yet and finding the podcast in which they discuss the drill is also worth the time of finding it.(not this exact variant but the d platoon qual in general)

I mistakenly wrote 224 on the paper but it's a 324.

Had a few instances where the clip slapped the timer and added extra shots, hence the extra hits showing on a few pics.

Similar to last time, no completely clean (all 10's) runs vs last time but i didn't have any misses at 25. I like the gun well enough and continue to enjoy this as a staple most sessions. Next time I'll run it from the ready as intended.

If you haven't ran this from the ready or the draw yet I recommend it. Covers a lot of ground in a short session. Probably best from the ready like the HiTS guys recommend it and as it is intended.

I've run this a few times lately with my gen3 G19 and irons. I typically score in the ~ 85% range, but sometimes break over 90% to pass. I lose most of my points at 25 yards. It's a good one.

I ran this today but with simulated cover (just a spare target in front of me but it created an obstacle to shoot around). From the holster for me with the same par times. For the three 25 and 15 yard strings I went right, left, kneeling right and from the 10 yard line in I did one string from each side.

I ended up with a 316 final. That was with one 3x5 miss at 3 and a .05 over time shot that cost me 10 at 7. I can live with the ot but the 3x5 miss hurts. Either of those could have taken me to a passing 90%. But it was not to be.

Points were attained as follows -

25 - 55/60

15 - 52/60

10 - 58/60

7 - 50/60 (60/60 but -10 for .05 ot)

5 - 57/60

3 - 44/60 (1 mike on 3x5)

Still one of my favorite test or quals out there. I enjoy running it regularly and I'm glad that the HiTS guys shared it with us. I'll continue to modify it to meet my needs as time goes but it's just a great standard.

Always love shooting new drills! They show me what I'm lacking on, in this case, better shooting at the 25 yard line, as I missed 4 of those shots...was in way too much of a hurry, way under par on those.

In fact, fired a 4 shot group after thr drill on a different target and the hits weren't terrible at all, just went too fast in the drill.

No problems at all with the Mozambiques 10 yards and in...because I practice those alot. HA! The last 2 at 3 yards were 1.55 and 1.62, with good hits. And I think all the F.A.S.T. drills have paid off as well in that regard.

My clustering over to the left indicates a need for more diligent dryfire, which I have not done much of lately.

You guys who're scoring well in this out of the holster are studs, that's off to ya.

I ran the HiTS version from week 47 dotw (8" and 3x5) striving for 90%, scored hit or miss. Gear was an SSR with SRO and Nills drawing from a comp rig. I scored 32/36 hits, so just on the edge of goal. I love this gun and this drill is perfect for wheel guns!
