In liberal democratic societies most people are divorced from the realities of violence and power. This is especially true now that universal military service has become a thing of the past, and as most people have little to no understanding of the origins of their food. That is to say, few (outside the security services and other pockets, say rural areas or deep inner city neighborhoods) realize that violent coercion is a necessary part of of the social order. Nor do they realize that something died so that they could have dinner.
I've walked through this discussion with some of my liberal, educated friends, and although they could grasp the logic of what I was saying, it fundamentally clashed with not their overtly expressed values, but rather, their gut beliefs about how society works.
They want to believe that everything can be worked out by talking. Sadly, that's not the world we live in, no matter how much people try to hide in the amusements of social media.
