View Full Version : mYPad Affordable Housing Shipping Containers in London....

I have to admit, it's clever and it seems to be taking people off of some benefits and saving taxpayers money....wait, did I just say that about London

The containers come from China and are transformed into studio apartments in Britain which can be stacked on top of each other - and are available to rent for only £75 a week.
.........................................

The 'mYPads' - which cost £20,000 each - are designed to allow young people to have their own rental accommodation but at a price that allows them to save up for a deposit.
It is thought each of the homes could save taxpayers £25,000 each year by taking people off housing and other related benefits.

While I was a student I took classes in a building made up of shipping containers. Had one not known about the way it was constructed it wouldn't have been noticeable.

Half of my classes in middle school were in these containers and other than them being too cold or hot, we referred to them as the "chicken coops". Two great teachers were in them and I still remember their names.

I'm rather amused that shipping container homes are seen as hip, but old fashoned single wide mobile homes are the abodes of ignorant white trash.

I lived in one of those in a small compound in Afghanistan for a month or so. Compared to sharing a tent with 20 other guys, it was awesome, but I can actually see the appeal as a civilian. Young people just out of college and starting their careers, for example, might be interested in cheap studios.

How about old curmudgeons who just want to be left alone..........and do you think they have one with a Mini Gun mount?

Nicer than the CHU I called home, by far, but CHU living was good living compared to tents.
I'm really interested in container construction. Something about it really appeals to me. Adam Kalkin has some really interesting designs.

Shipping container homes have been around for quite a while in various degrees of luxury. There are some very interesting designs out there and often people are surprised at how good a building material a container can be. Here are a few:

Always liked this (http://www.architectureandhygiene.com/12conHouse/12con_main.html) one....
Saw it in detail on TV (extreme homes?) a while ago.

Neat, but where's the insulation?

Neat, but where's the insulation?

IIRC, it's built to be a summer house in Maine, so, heating/cooling needs are minimal.
That said, there's plenty of options for thin insulation (think steel barns) or expanding sprayed foam.
Looks like there's drywall inside so insulation would be relatively easy to hide. Insulated glass, etc.

Same house, more info.

Unless they are orphans whose tears you are harvesting to bait your unicorn traps. Then, and only then, is it acceptable.

I wouldn't think it too bad if designed properly. I've lived in a number of homes with metal roofs (including the one I'm in now) and with decent insulation it's OK. As an added benefit you don't have to worry about damage to shingles!

First thing I thought was, "how does the toilet work" given you don't have much room underneath the box itself. Bathroom is probably on a platform, but still....they cut off the video before you got a good shot of the bathroom. Otherwise, looked like a nice option for a hunting lease or something of that nature.

I've built a few workshops here from old containers. If I was building a residence from one, my choice would be to use a refridgerated container instead of the standard steel.

We were super happy we spent the money for a new metal roof about 3 weeks before Sandy hit.

Definitely a fan. The rain isn't too loud, but you'd think a meteor crashed through the house when snow falls off the 3rd floor roof onto the 2nd floor roof.

LOL! Wait until your first hail storm! Of course, part of my issue is the front porch is right by the living room and it is just metal with no insulation, so it gets LOUD!

We had some pretty incredible hail storms at Bagram on our little metal-roofed "c-huts". I am sure with any decent insulation they would not have been quite so unnerving, lol.

Yay, a metal box. Hot in summer and cold in winter. Better than a cardboard box, I guess.
