First third of rifling is gone.

Which is totally awesome.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/10/02/y6uryhe7.jpg

I wonder how it would have done without the Clean Fire ammo....

That's a high velocity upgrade, smoothbore is to get more speed from the boolets. I mean, an M1 tank has a smoothbore main gun for a reason, right?

As close as you're going to get in a 9mm; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q44shCovQk&feature=player_embedded

although not an actual sabot round.

You have some super hairy fingers, bro.

I must've missed it:

How many +P loads were used?

BLR

Gotta ask Todd about the diet.

I don't have hairy fingers. I have manly, awesome fingers.

Total rounds before gun was sent to Bill: 53,040

total lead free: 35,427

That'll buff out.

(The barrel, not your fingers.)

I'd say it pretty well already is. ;)

1911guy,

It would be interesting to see this thing hucked up in a Ransom rest and compared to a lower mileage example, if you have one handy?

I think it's cute you think that I didn't do precisely that already. As it happens, I have a brand spanking new 9mm "Pro" to compare with

*Of course, it's primary barrel is a 9x23. I just got the 9mm barrel because of peer pressure. It's not even been taken out of the little baggy

I'm sure the rifling could be "refreshed" with a dremel...

BLR
10-01-2013, 07:30 PM
No kidding, I personally know of and can put my hand on a 100k+ 45ACP barrel that will still do 2" at 35yrds. And it isn't anywhere near as shot out as that bbl.

Of course, a steady diet of 200g LSWCs isn't exactly harsh on a barrel.

**Interesting side note - the older Wilson barrels, made from 17-4, are the longest wearing barrels. 17-4 far out performs 410 in erosion resistance.

Yes, but the cost of having his slide and frame cut to "Officer's ACP" specs is pretty expensive. :p

Being that it is Todd's barrel, I guess nobody will suggest he wore it out by too much/too vigorous a cleaning regimen.

My old issued 1911 (not a 1911a1, and actual 1911...) had a barrel that looked kinda like that, it shot fine with issued ball ammo.

It was combat accurate.

:D

I love laughing at my own jokes.

Was just over 2" at 35yrds for a 10 shot group using FGM. It broke the 2" barrier with some go-to bullseye loads (though, wouldn't function...a little too powderpuffy).

So even with that kind of erosion and wear on the barrel, the thing was still shooting 2" groups at 35 yards?

Revolvers can be accurate even after the bullet jumps a ton of freebore, why not autos? ;)

Okay, I'll say it:

"I'd love to be able to shoot 2" 10rd groups @ 35yds." :o

...and I can't be only one who's thinking/saying that after reading this thread.

I got dibs on that magical TLG barrel should it ever become available to a mere mortal. How hard could shoe-hor... um, "custom 'smithing" it for my P30L be after all?

Looking forward to the wire up! ;)

(It's too bad that the hand-lapped fit of a lot of parts would make wear comparisons irrelevant between two separate guns. Getting every bearing surface measured to the closest thousandth of a nerdometer when new and after 50k rounds would be interesting, if totally academic.)

Any chance you slugged the bore for a measurement on the smooth-bore section?

Me too. Curious to see if an increase in windage outweighed the shorter rifled section.

Thank you for spelling "regimen" correctly. (I.e., it's not a military unit...)
Drill Sergeant Dailey said he never cleaned his competition guns. Yes, he said "guns."

As a matter of fact, there was a 75-90fps velocity difference between the two. The lack of resistance as a result of Todd's new freebore, keeps peak pressure from developing as quickly. As a result, velocity drops off.

I sure am not going to take up lead free ammo.

You shouldn't be.

You want me to send you the bore-chamber casting once it's measured?

If you've got no need for it and would just junk it, sure. But if you can use it for some purpose, don't feel obligated to send it to me.
