I'm stuck at an equal mental potential on these two cases and need some help tipping either way.

holds more pistols/mags, is a pelican knockoff but of good quality from what i can find out, and is cheaper.
$179.90 shipped.

has nicer pistol pockets, and has that spot for stuffing things like muffs or my sight pusher. (ignore the zombie moniker.)
$307.03 shipped.

the difference between 5 or 6 pistols carried is irrelevant to me.

alternatively I could use gun rugs and a different locking case, but what case would I use and how much would it cost?

basically, what is everyone else using for transport/security when carrying more than 2 pistols to the range?

Is it important to you that it be a hard sided lockable case? Where I live that isn't a requirement for going to the range but I can understand it might be for you. I have been giving some thought to getting one of these (http://www.nrastore.com/nrastore/ProductDetail.aspx?c=18&p=SA+494&ct=e) without the NRA branding. But I have no first hand experience with them yet. I have been using one of the myriad of my maxpediton bags as a range bag until I find something I like better.

beyond the fact that I like the idea of a hard locking case to protect them in, I live in New Jersey... 'nuff said.

I just use the run of the mill plastic hardcase with foam that pistols come in. BaiHu just uses his rangebag.

You know it doesn't have to be lockable, right? You could just use your gun rugs, no locks needed.

You sure that's compliant with the octopus that is NJ gun laws? just putting unloaded sans magazine pistols in rugs, putting said in my range bag, zipping it up, and going? No locks? Ammo still has to be in a seperate bag though.

My head hurts too much to go and try and decipher the laws... AGAIN.

Your head shouldn't hurt, the law is very simple and straight forward.

(N.J.S.2C:39-5 g):

"...shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported, and in the course of travel shall include only such deviations as are reasonably necessary under the circumstances."

Use a brown paper bag if you want. Just make sure to tie it. :)

oh I'd love to see THAT interaction! then again if you're interacting with a LEO while on the way to/from the range I suspect you kittened it up pretty good before that and are about to be on the receiving end of a Really Bad Day, regardless of how you've packed your boomsticks.

To me it's a matter of how much we want to voluntarily restrict our rights just because.

Risky? I don't think so. I don't see following the letter of the law as being a legal activist provocateur and asking for trouble. YMMV.

IMO, NJ gun owners are our own worst enemy.

I was more making a commentary on why would you willfully engage in bad behavior such that you'd invite a LEO encounter whilst transporting a firearm. I do tend to be on somewhat better behavior when driving to and from the range. I guess I lean more towards paranoia. Perhaps its by design of the NJ legislature?

I'd go with your choice #1. Choice #2 has way too little space for accessories. Tape, stapler, timer, sharpies, stickers, 5-10 spare mags, snap caps, chewing gum, snack, water, ear pro, spare ear pro, eye pro, spare eye pro, ammo, etc, etc, etc. You'll need a spare range bag for gear anyhow, so, just get the case that takes guns-only, assuming that is what your state requires.

Frankly, the easiest thing you could do for yourself is move to a free state. I know I need a range bag for accessories, I'll throw a .22 or spare gun in the bag, and my other gun's safe because it's on my waist. I don't need to bring 4-5 guns because most of the rest of the US makes it convenient for people to go shooting. So, I go to the range a lot, and only bring 1-2 guns. And probably only shoot 1 gun. My gear doesn't need a lock because it's always in my presence and I'm armed and my state doesn't treat the law abiding public like the enemy.

Come to Ohio. Buy any of the NFA gear you want. Get a CCW. Carry your gear to any of our plentiful, beautiful ranges. There are more gun shops than you can shake a stick at. Training is bountiful and abundant here too! For the most part, we have clean air as well.

Not helpful. The rest had some interesting points.

You poor soul. I know something of what you must endure-I lived in suburban Chicago, and whenever I left home my guns were field stripped for transport. Why the extra step? Because in Chicagoland there are ignorant cops, ignorant waiters, and ignorant bank tellers. Out of those three jobs, one of those occupations can legally ruin your life permanently over a misunderstanding.

Nowadays I toss two mags into a Walmart bag and drive ten minutes to a field with my loaded gun. Its a better way to do things.

As to the subject at hand, id go with the second case. And i'd field strip the guns too, just in case you encounter Sgt. Hoplophobe on the drive back from the range.
