My LGS has a used Wilson Combat "Service Grade" CQB 5" .45 acp available for an asking price of $2400 with WC soft case, and 2 mags. It appears to be in good condition, round count is unknown. I understand the Service Grade Guns were produced in the mid to late 1990's and it has the older style WC 3 dot night sights (not the current Novak /pyramid style).

For those in the know on higher end 1911's:

1) Is this a fair price ?
2) Any particular issues / concerns specific to this model ?
3) Are there any other sights which fit the cut fo the older style WC night sights ?

Thanks

Almost two-and-a-half long sounds a little strong for a used CQB to my ears, but it's been a couple years since I seriously priced Wilsons.

Is there some Wilson collector's community that will pay extra for the "Service Grade" deal?

No WC collectors.

Do you know the yeast of manufacture?

Price depends on condition.

No issues or concerns for CQB s.

Rear sight is a Novak cut.

First, today I learn that Smith built 5" DA revos in .44-40. Now I learn that Wilson built "Service Grade" 1911's.

Slow down world!

I haven't priced them as I hadn't known of their existence, but it seems like I've seen fairly current production CQB's out there for not much more.

I am enamored with the newer frames with the undercut trigger guards myself. Regardless, I bet it runs and if it doesn't, Wilson will make it.

To echo 1911guy's post, I know of no Wilson Collectors. We're users!

Like this handsome devil: (2nd one in, rockin' the Inigo Montoya t-shirt and the 10-8 hat.) Dig that crush grip thing goin' on!) :)

Shield your eyes boys, some serious 1911 porn is about to unfold.

The sights are this style: http://shopwilsoncombat.com/Nite-Eyes-Snag-Free-Sight-Set-Full-Size-1911-Tritium/productinfo/367T/

Condition is good - i'd put it about 95%. It has a black over green finish.

It does not have a high grip cut frame. It appears to be one of the early guns built on Wilson's own frames and slides so i would say it dates from some time in the late 1990's.

I'm thinking 2400 is a bit strong - I may offer 2k.

You are sure it's a CQB?

Marked "Service Grade" and "CQB"

I believe these were the first guns WC made on their own frames & slides vs Colt and Springfield base guns.

Gold bead front sight ?

Yep. But I am not getting along with it. Wilson insists that .190" is the proper height with their Battle Sight rear, but it shoots low, low, low for me. Always has.

My old CQB has their "Combat Pyramid" tritiums on it and it shoots where I point it. Always has.

I've been trying to get on with the gold bead for a coupla years now but it just ain't working for me. I have to put the top of the front sight well above the rear to hit where I need to. I think I've given it a fair trial.

Given the conversations I've witnessed here concerning sights, I am going to abandon the gold and get it fitted with glowy sights like my other guns.

I went with the Battle rear and the gold front as that seemed to be the ideal combo at the time and I wanted to give it a try. I liked the shelf on the Battle as it REALLY grabs when performing one handed manipulations but I've subsequently found that adding a patch of nonskid tape on top of the slide between the rear sight and the ejection port works just as well.

Plus it looks swanky.

Sounds like the gun / sight height vs the gold bead itself /as a concept.

Given my aging eyes if I am leaning towards the same combo (Battle rear and the gold front) if I go for a new CQB.

The gold definitely catches your eye and is easier to pick up than a NS front but I cheat and paint the front with blaze orange vinyl fishing lure paint so I can see it. Naturally, the carry gun front is untouched. If needed the paint can be easily removed should I need to carry a 5" gun.

Perhaps if I had started with the gold bead combo, I might like it more but I still feel that a .170" front is the correct height.

If it's that early, for even $2k, I'll keep looking.

$1500 would be more reasonable, IMO.

The best guns Wilson has made start with "WCT" in the serial number. I have a few older guns, early 2000s, and they are no where near as nice a gun. A LNIB recent CQB will sell for $2400ish.

I don't know anything about the service grade models.

However, when I sold my last 1911 earlier this year ... a plain Jane Wilson CQB circa 1996 ... IIRC I got $2000 or $2200. I can't remember which it was. Condition was very good, round count unknown as I was not the original owner. It shot great, functioned perfectly, but had some very minor scratches on the slide from where my "gunsmith" installed the night sights (that's a whole 'nother story).

I'd say $2400 is too much but not surprising at a LGS. I'd say at $2000 it's fair. If you can get it for less it would be a good deal.

As far as the sights ... I'd prefer those over the newer pyramid thing-a-ma-jigs.

When I was 16-17 and wished for a Wilson CQB in 2004ish. They retailed $1800.

Thank you all.

The last high end 1911 I purchased was my Les Baer "commander" in 2000 - it was about $900 used / LNIB. I think they were about $ 1300 -1400 new at the time. It's still going strong though my aging eyes need a wider notch rear sight.

I think I will make an offer on this CQB if its still there next week. The last time I saw a new CQB locally The LGS wanted $3600! They tend to be a bit optimistic.

They may have a different gun in many ways these days. Back then almost all high end production 1911s were around 2. Baer, Brown and Wilson's. Now it seems everybody is 3+, what's changed... I'll leave that for 1911guy.

I wouldn't pay $2,000 for a 15 year old CQB. The newer ones are all billet steel parts, frame excluded, the older ones were a hodge podge of billet, forged, MIM and cast parts. MSRP on a CQB starts at $2865 in 2013. Dealers like MI Gunslingers will sell you one for 10% off retail, so now you're saving less than $600 even if you do talk your local guy down to $2k. I don't know if your local FFL will charge you tax on out of state transfer, but the dealer with the used CQB will charge sales tax, so now the difference is less than $500.
