I present Calvin and Muad'Dib (http://calvinanddune.tumblr.com/)! If you haven't read Dune (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7NPRY8/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00B7NPRY8&linkCode=as2&tag=ratio07-20) yet, you are WRONG.

I got a good laugh out of there, the lady looked at me like I was a few short of a full deck.

I read the book about 25 years ago and can't remember it enough to relate but the carton was funny.

Curious. Is one defined as a 'Dune fan' if they like primarily the first book? Or does it have to be the whole series?

I'd say you're a Dune geek because you have an opinion; and because you know there are books, and not just a terrible movie.

What series? It's just the one book, and the rest* never happened. Especally those dissappointing books by those guys not named "Frank Herbert".

*though the Dune parody episode on "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" made "The God Emperor of Dune" almost worth reading.

I enjoyed books 5 and 6.

I've read most of the books written by Frank Herbert. I'd have to say the first book and the BBC Miniseries from 2000 or so are the only ones worthwhile.

Dune was a masterpiece. Dune Messiah was still pretty damn good. Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune were okay, still worth reading once if you like the universe. Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune are probably worth ignoring flat out. All IMO, of course.

Can't. Stop. Reading.
Curse you LL, now I'm behind on a project. And I have to read Dune again.

I think you can be a fan and like primarily the first book.

I was a kid when I first picked up Dune and the politics were impenetrable to me. I knew it was a big deal of a book and that I should read it, but I couldn't. I'd get in 20, 50, once almost 70 pages before I put it away because it made absolutely no sense to me.

Then one day in my late teens, I picked it up on a Friday and read it straight through that weekend, barely stopping long enough to catch a bit of sleep. Everything fell into place and made perfect sense, right from the get-go. It's one of my all-time favorites that I re-read every few years.

Weird.

I thought 5 and 6 were quite good. I couldn't stand 2, 3 was barely acceptable, and 4 was just to be endured.

Exact same thing happened to me for The Killer Angels. Bought the book at a book fair when I was in, like, 6th grade, read like 5 pages, and gave up. Sat on the bookshelf for ages, until one day in high school, I was like, "eh, why not", and read it in one go. Kids just ain't got no taste, I guess.

De gustibus non est disputandum, I guess. To me, 5 and 6 were just... too out there, too fantastical, for me to like.

My assessment exactly. Four was so hard to get through...

The original Dune really is a masterpiece.
