Gun was dropped right before running through the FAM Qual Test.

The up side: 550 rounds, no FTF/FTE after being dropped.

Passed the Qual, 146/150 for the first run. With full power 170g ammo :D

Too bad, but you can consider them character marks.

Was the pistol loaded at the time? I remember Drake Oldham's drop tests on the old 10-8 forum that indicated how easy a 1911 is to inertia fire when dropped muzle down on concrete.

Kill your idols (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7296/1489/1600/spring4.jpg). :p

Sadly, this was not my first drop this year.

#1, a CQB-E at a nursery picking up trees for mom.

#2, a Custom Colt climbing down from a tractor, on to gravel

This was the third. I am seriously considering switching to something that won't generate the pain this did. (It would be indiscreet to mention price or the strings that were pulled to get this gun).

On inertia firing a 1911....don't believe everything you are told. For reference, the Pro Tam showed, passed a very tough drop test for the FBI. With a full size, steel firing pin.

I don't have a battle belt. One day last winter - because it was so cold - I thought it would be OK to use my parka pocket instead of a proper holster. Everything was fine until I started picking brass.

Sadly, this was not my first drop this year...

So, I've got to ask...

What is the holster?

BLR

This was a butter fingers drop, not a holster issue.

Holster is a Kirkpatric IWB http://www.kirkpatrickleather.com/iwb-holsters/hidden-defense-86

Nice holster, one of my favs.

Not as embarrassing as when a friend (and member on the board, no names!) had a brainfart and tried to lock his P30 slide after reassembly by racking it like a Glock.

Racking P30 slide without slide lock lever installed = priceless look of "what the fudge?" and gnarly sounding "clang!ting!tang!" as P30 slide launches into air and lands in gravel.

What about the other two drops?

I second this question. It sounds like your CCW gun is making unscheduled, unscripted public appearances, which is usually bad for celebrities, politicians, and carry pieces.

BLR

#1 was the only CC drop. The butt of the gun caught the tailgate of my truck and pulled out while loading trees and chicken crap.

#2 was open carry on my farm, while I was monkeying down from the 4420 JD.

This didn't even involve a holster. I just dropped it. Simple as that. From my hands to the concrete...with a dull thud.

That said, Wilson is stepping up to the plate on helping me un-*u** it.

I will admit, I gave some serious thought on plastic people poppers today. I resisted. But I was really, really tempted.

Tools get scratched and dinged in use--no big deal as long as function is not impaired.

Oh, I have no problem with honest wear and tear. Even on $6k pistols.

But man, dropping one like that? Made me want to go home and kick a liberal. ;)

I am still figuring out what price point a gun jumps to the "work of art" level. I would hate to drop a work of art. Maybe if I set the point at $10K. But then I would have to hang out with a new class of shooters and art collectors.

No keep it as is, in twenty years you'll look at all the dings in it and laugh at the stories behind them.

Slavex

I'll give you $50 for it, plus shipping. And I don't even like 1911s....

I know your pain though dude. My 8045 Cougar that I got years ago, and is a rare gun (only one of it's kind in Canada), I scratched taking the zap strap off of it. Man was I mad. Before I even got to take it to the range and it's scratched.

I should make this clear. The drop didn't just nick the finish, it bent the mag chute on the dinged side a little about 1/16th of an inch into the mag well. Look carefully to the chute on the picture showing the front strap checkering. I'm going to try to swage it out today.

I'll send it back to WC when I have something else to obsess over.

Oh yeah it did bend it a bit, I'd probably fix that too.

It's your pistol do what you need to do, me I don't want to end up being 83yrs old with a safe full of new looking guns.

Nice looking 1911 to by the way.

I'm sorry to hear this happened to your blaster.....grip tape better then checkering? :p Sorry I had to poke a little at you! Regardless that's a pretty nice piece of metal, I hope you can swage it out my friend.

Just done. It now fits worse than new, and better than my 10mm "Pro," FWIW

Gonna shoot the crap out of it now.

Nope. Just a case of dumbass déjà vu. The last holster I used covered the mag release. The current one that I made leaves the release uncovered so I can drop the mag if desired while holstered. Well, after doing my business, I had apparently made a habit of grabbing the gun/holster positioning my thumb over the catch. On two occasions as I stood up and turned to the right....

KERPLUNK!!!!!

I've since made adjustments to my technique. :)

Modified FAST drills - distance was 25M (at a rifle shoot, has a pistol CoF)

Holster Raven IWB, ammo 170g @ 1150fps, from closed front concealment

12.43s clean
11.97s clean
12.01s clean

No one shooting a "combat accurate" pistol shot a clean run. Just for ref purposes.

(I'm shooting my HS-Precision HTR in 7mm Rem Mag, if anyone is interested, for the match. Shots out to 700yrds)

Challenge accepted. But I'm pretty sure I won't be able to match your 3 clean runs in a row, which is extremely impressive.

I don't know how impressive that really is. An average of nearly 2s per shot?

And I was rocking a multi-thousand dollar gun. That gun Ransom Rested at 0.8" at 25yrds using that load, giving me about 2" error before busting the 3x5 hit zone. Some doods G17 is likely not giving any margin of error to him, and even more likely not capable of doing 3 inch groups at 25yrds using WWB.
