ZT 0350 with plain blade for me. I wish now I had gotten the PT 0360 during the SKD run. I missed the boat but that IS why I ended up with the ZT in the first place. I recalled the PT run and liked the look.

I'm fond of the Kershaw Storm, I have several of them stored away in their boxes since they no longer make them. Not because I ever expect them to ever be worth more than retail but I have a nasty OCD habit of stockpiling that which I like in-case they discontinue it. For the price they were hard to beat.

I consider my EDC knife a utility tool and not a fighting weapon. I suppose it could be pressed into service as a last resort. I like the Benchmade Mini Griptilian because of the small size, sharp blade (with available combo edge), strong locking mechanism, and very reasonable price.

I've got a few laying around that I EDC ;). As of late, it's been these ones....

http://www.pbase.com/sabu71/image/132816459/large.jpg

The Spyderco Manix 2. Like the Benchmade Griptilian, it's a very affordable package. Affordable enough that I have a pair of em ;).

This is the other one....pardon the crappy pics, the light isn't co-operating today for me ;).

http://www.pbase.com/sabu71/image/122705508/large.jpg

For the buck, as I stated above, it's tough to beat. The Ball Bearing lock (Spyderco's answer to the Axis Lock) is pretty rock solid. I think my only real beef with it (if you want to call it that) is it's tough to disengage with one hand. To be honest, it's probably better suited with two hands....I do have a trick that I use to unlock with one hand ;). But I still have a love of the axis lock (got a few laying around the house here somewhere :D.

As of late too, I've also been toting around a Large Sebbie. I've found it to be pretty flawless with regard to fit and finish. Locks up tight, and it's not as sticky as some other Ti Framelocks I've had.

http://www.pbase.com/sabu71/image/127026030/large.jpg

As Jay alluded to, my blades are tools first, weapons second. But I switch em up every so often (variety is the spice of life, no ??? ;). I'll have to dig around and see what else I have pic wise

This is exactly what I carry as well. I've carried another Spyderco, an older Camillus heat, and before that your standard CRKT M16Z. The waved Endura has been fantastic and once well-trained with the wave feature, is lightning fast.

A great tool.

The manix 2 is an awesome knife, I carried one for a few months, my only complaint was from the factory it wasn't that sharp, but easily remedied on a spyderco sharpmaker.

Thanks for the compliment on my leather...the knife is amazing, and seeing as how I got to trade leather for Ti...all the better :p

Todd Rexford grew up right around the corner from Lou Alessi's shop. Lou and Todd's dad were good friends. I bought one of Todd's early knives and he told me the story about his dad and Lou. Sufice it to say that I now have a good friend in the Knife Making Business!

I like the Manix 2 in plain edge for EDC. If I need a smaller, lighter blade, the Spyderco Persistence is good enough. Put a convex edge on mine and for a small, cheap knife, it does what a pocket knife should do.

I have been having sleepless nights though, after seeing a Caly 3.5. That would fit my needs quite well.

I carry a Spyderco Gayle Bradley for my everyday needs. I have yet to sharpen the CPM-M4 in well over a year of carry, and though it isn't as sharp as it was, it still cuts cardboard and such pretty well.

ZT 0350 for me, use it everyday for all my work needs and edc. I thought it was too large at first yet it carried so well in my pocket I at times have to confirm it is still there. I have had SOG and kershaws that "wondered" when clipped inside my pocket and found them to irritate me when I would try to fish other things out of that pocket.
The ZT stays where I put it and I really like the speed safe.

I use a Spyderco Endura 4, not crazy about it.

But $60-80 is about the limit of what I'll spend on a pocket knife, honestly.

I've got a friend at work who collects knives and has a few that are $300-400, but refuses to carry them... which in turn means he refuses to use them.

I don't get it.

ETA: I'll clarify why I'm not crazy about it.

I bent the pocket clip pretty badly, and had to replace it and it came, frankly, pretty dull from the factory. I've managed to get a chip in the end of the blade (uncertain of how) but other then that, I like the texture, the blade really doesn't rust, and it's slim and quick-ish to get out, I don't have to fish around in my pockets.

Back when I would still go to the wal-mart I bought 5 or 6 of these when they were on sale at $30 each. They no longer make them but for $30 it's a lot of knife, it's a nice size and razor sharp out of the box.

* Steel: Sandvik 13C26 stainless-steel
* Handle: 410 stainless-steel with Trac-Tec inserts
* Blade Length: 3 1/2 in. (8.4 cm)
* Closed Length: 4 3/4 in. (12.0 cm)
* Weight: 5.8 oz.

Got a few new ones:

http://www.pbase.com/sabu71/image/133408616/large.jpg

Top to Bottom:

Spyderco James Keating Chinook (been after that one for quite some time now. It's been discontinued as of late. So grab one if you can find it for a reasonable price). Thing is a frickin beast. Lots of tow weight. Very heavy duty.

Benchmade Onslaught. This is another I've been after for a while since they came out. It's big, but it carries light (almost like a Spyderco Millie, which is a runt when compared to this one). Very thin grind compared to other folders this size. Wouldn't say it's made for light prying or anything like it, but it is one hell of a slicer and cutter. I think this'll handle just about any type of EDC chore you'd throw at it.

Spyderco SuperHawk. I'm not much for EDC'ing Hawkbilled blades, but this thing is built pretty solid. Uses Spyderco's compression lock, and unlike other compression locks they offer, this one's buttery smooth. No sticking or anything. Dunno how much I'll carry this one. Might be useful going fishing, rockclimbing, or anything that requires rope, lines, or what have you. May also make a nice last ditch emergency tool as well

I carry at least one of these everyday, though none what I would call my EDC. Depends on what I need it to do that day, or what I expect to need it to do. Auto's on the left, manual openers on the right. Most often used/carried are the Spyderco Delica, Pro-Tech Godson, Buck, and the PT.com Zero Tolerance. Most of the others are good knives, just don't get used all that often. Some of the others are also just expensive examples of knives that suck. Some suck pretty bad, like the Benchmade AFO's......the SOG Auto is pretty weak too, but their manual knife is well built.

Does anyone have any experience with this knife?

Spyderco Perrin PPT Black Corrugated G-10 ~ C135PPT
FULL FLAT GROUND CPM-S30V
http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=462

I recently sold off a few guns (including my beloved Ed Brown) and have some scratch I'd like to itch. I am looking for a really good quality, something to be proud of, but at the same time working folder. I want something that will be in my pocket for the next 20 years. It won't be something I'll not use in fear of scratching, etc. It will be used as a tool and not a show piece.

I have a few folders I rotate through based on my apparal and expected needs for the day. These are not considered tools, not weapons, so I have NO philosphical issues rotating them.

I currently own;

Unknown model Spyderco (PRCA logo) I've owned/carried off/on for over 15 yrs. This has micarta scales, full serrated blad, very thin overall, and is lightweight. This one still gets carried the most as it easily hides in my business casual pockets. I've broken the tip off the blade at least twice and Spyderco has taken care of it both times. I just can't let this one go ... in spite of the cheesy cowboy logo. (I worked in a western boot store in college for a couple of years.)

Zero Tolerance 0350. I LOVE this knife and usually carry it evenings/weekends. I don't carry it to work because I'm techinically not even supposed to have a knife on the premesis and this thing would be really hard to explain away. Although fairly big & heavy it actually carries well since it is pretty thin.

Benchmade mini-Griptillian in all black with plain, non-serrated blade. I like this little knife a lot. It gets carried frequently in place of the Spyderco.

Spyderco Endura4 from LWD with the GLOCK armorer's tool. I bought this because I was bored one day and couldn't find anything else online to buy. The only time I carry this knife is on range trips and/or matches. Otherwise, it sits in the mailbox. Not sure why but I just haven't warmed to it. It's really, really long.

Kershaw Leek in all black with plain, non-serrated blade. I used to love this knife. In fact I had duplicates. After carrying it for several years I dropped it on the ceramic tile floor in my foyer and the blade popped open. The force broke the cheap-ass plastic piece that acts as a safety and it just popped upen. Kershaw has EXCELLENT customer service and replaced the safety for me but I just have no confidence in it now. I NEVER carry it.

My specs aren't very well defined but here are some features I'd like.

Folder.

Blade length between 2.5-3.5in.

Clip that allows deep ride in pocket.

Some heft to it but at the same time not as heavy as a brick. MUST be less than 6oz but less than 5oz would be even better.

Plain blade, or at least no more than partially serrated.

Some sort of scales ... G-10, micarta, etc. ... rather than bare metal finish on the grip.

Max $250 OTD price.

HELP!!!

MODs if you think this needs to be a separate thread please let me know or just split it off for me. Thanks so much.

VG- take a look at the Spyderco Paramilitary 2. I don't have one but it's on the want list. Many seem to regard it as a perfect EDC knife- about the same length as the ZT 350 but slimmer and lighter, and the compression lock is supposed to be very strong.
A little chunkier is the ZT 0550 and 0551 , a collaboration with Rick Hinderer, whose knives are very sought after (and quite expensive). It's more of a "hard use" knife.
If you're worried about low ride in the pocket, go to Bladeforums and look for STR's Knife Works, he custom makes low Rider clips for many different knives, and I think they're only around $30.
If you really want to jazz it up look at this guy
http://www.tuffknives.com/index.html
for some custom scales.
I'll probably think of a few more, will post if I come up with some.

Know anything about the Leafstorm? A buddy has one and really likes it. I have handled it once and recall liking it but didn't like the way one side was bare frame with a scale only one one side. I might have to see if I can get with him to look at it again though. I really like the size.

Sorry, I don't. I think it's hard to go wrong with a Spyderco though.
For the record I don't even own many knives, I just spend an inordinate amount of time checking them out for some reason. If you want to make the decision process even harder, browse Bladeforums or the Spyderco forum to find out more than you ever wanted to know :)
ETA : forgot that the ZT is a framelock (only one scale) , so it may not be what you want.
Also here's a cool PM2 sprint run that should be out soon:

I'm carrying a Benchmade Stryker mostly, these days. I'm not posting a picture because it looks pretty much like all the other Benchmade Strykers you've seen*. I have an Emerson Commander I've needed to ship back to Emerson for some work for, like, four years now. This makes me sad.

I carry two knives every day.

My "get off me" knife is an Emerson Karambit.

The other knife is more for general chores with defense as a minor role. Right now, I'm trying out the Emerson Roadhouse (a CQC 10 had that job for a few years) and am pretty happy with it; my only problem is that the point is not in straight line with the handle and points slightly "up". As time goes by, I'll see if that's really a problem for me.

On a daily basis for the past 5 years or so I've carried a Spyderco Native usually hooked in a cargo pocket or back pocket, as well as an Emerson LaGriffe about 10:30-11:00.

At work(firefighter/EMT) I carry a Spyderco Pacific Salt that I got for a good deal, but the steel seems pretty damn soft and the edge rolls extremely easily, so I may be switching to something else. I've always been intrigued by Microtechs, the Troodon piques my interest, but given the price and mixed reviews I'm not sure that's a road I want to go down and I may switch to a fixed blade.

Not folder related, but I'm interested in picking up a Clinch-Pick or Paul Moore BOB to replace the Emerson for something a little bigger and more comfortable to hold. Also just because, I would like a Strider DB with gunner grips.

Have you seen the upcoming ZT/Hinderer design 0560/0561?

it exceeds your blade length requirement by 1/4", and your OTD price by a few $$, weighs in at 5.8 oz, same as your 0350.
ZT has a new 'deep carry' clip for it, one side G-10 scale, lock side textured titanium. Scales are 3-d textured, so it may be a little thicker than your 0350.

I'm probably going to get one to replace my 0200 when they become available. I don't really get excited about new knives, nor am I a collector, but i'm a believer in ZT quality, and am really looking forward to this knife.

Swear to gosh my knives are chosen to go with my outfit. I have a green-anodized Spyderco Bob Lum that I wear with earth tones. When I wear black I carry a Benchmade Bogziewski Mini-Spike.
That's very "metro" of you.
I wear jeans all the time so I bought a dark blue and a light gray Spyderco Endura.
You know, for camouflage.
Not for color coordination, which would be "metro".

G60 that's the first I've seen of the new ZT. It's very cool but I'm thinking I want something smaller, lighter, thinner for EDC.

Although I'm still digging the Strider PT wispofwillow posted earlier I think I'm narrowing down my selections to something from Spyderco.

I like the Leafstorm, Manix2, Rock Lobster, Sage3 and a few others. Still working through the line but it's so hard to get a "feel" for them without actually feeling them.

Any specific suggestions on Spyderco's please chime in or send me a PM. Again, wanting something with a thin overall profile and not overly large. I have the huge ZT 0350 when I want a big knife. I want something smaller and a little fancier.

UPDATE: I broke down just a few minutes ago and ordered myself a Spyderco Leafstorm. Merry Christmas to me.

To be honest, I rarely carry a folder anymore. While I know it's not the intended purpose, my Clinch Pick has become my everyday/every-use knife.

The ZT Hinderer design is a good knife, I have a Hinderer XM-18 and it is a super tough folder. I am partial to Chris Reeve folders though. I prefer the old style/original large Sebenza and the new Umnumzaan. But it all depends on your budget due the Reeve knives being a bit pricey these days.

I've been carrying a Spyderco P'Kal for a while. I bought it because a Clinch Pick is as rare as hen's teeth. I like the P'Kal more than I anticipated, and I am able to deploy it relatively quickly.

Volgrad,

The Strider PT is awesome...and they are a little over budget (300$). I actually carry this everyday right now.

here is a picture of the PT

I just got a ZT0551. The 0550 might be an option for those who want something a tad smaller than the 0560/1.

Very impressed with the 551 so far.

3.5 in blade, 5.8 ounces and retails for around $200.

Some of the fancy Spydercos look great too.

Clinch Pick is a superb knife. If you can find one for sale. I have been using this and like it, but would love to get a hold of a Pick.

At least you had the energy to steal. All I could muster was a grammatically incorrect description.

ETA: I want a knife with the cord cutter thing. It seems like it would be infinitely useful.

I had a chance to fondle most of the Spyderco line yesterday at a pretty decent knife store. I'm happy with the Leafstorm that should be in my mailbox any day now. The Sage3 was pretty nice (fit my wants) but I was turned off by the Taiwan stamped on the blade.

Their customer service treated me very well several years ago and I've been a loyal customer ever since.

Tam, beautiful guns and photos.

Also, I had the same benchmade auto for almost 2 years. Good knife.

I was issued that same knife. Anyone know if it is true that B'made will replace the blade free of charge? Mine is pretty worn.

Benchmades have lifetime warranties, in addition to lifetime sharpening. Note: there is much red tape mailing automatic knives to and from benchmade.

I'd post a link, but their site is down.

VolGrad,

That leafstorm is sexy! I almost bought one a few weeks back, but didn't know anyone who had actually handled one in my area, so held off.

What do you think?

Honestly, its gonna be hard to not buy a Sage 2, but a leafstorm might be next.

I love it. It's super lightweight without sacrificing function or durability. It's a perfect size to drop in your pocket if you prefer not to clip it on our pocket too.

I haven't carried my Paul Moore BOB for the past few months because I loaned it to my brother. I got it back. It is an excellent knife. Now I hope to carry it instead of my Pikal.

The Pikal is a great folder, but I prefer fixed blades. I've flubbed the deployment of my Pikal on several occasions. That won't be an issue with a fixed blade.

I'd love for Spyderco to produce a fixed blade version of the Pikal.

I tried.
The steel in this knife (154CM) made a mockery of my attempts to score it with a bastard file.
Look close at the photo just above the "H" on the blade and you can see the slightest scratch... that scratch took me 5 minutes of sweaty work with a big ass file to make.
The only way would be to go "gunsmith" on it with a Dremel but I'm afraid the blade steel is so hard that making a cut would heat it too much.

Jody,

I think you can make it work. Here's a picture of a Benchmade Griptilian I cut on using a Dremel and cutoff wheel. The blade is 154cm. I put the knife in a vise mounted on a workbench. I cut very slowly with the cutoff wheel. I cut a small amount, felt the area I was cutting and once it was warm to the touch, removed the knife from the vise and cooled it in a cup of water, put the knife back in the vise and repeated until I was done.

As far as I understand it (be warned, I read a couple of knifemaking books years ago and have now forgotten a lot of what I read = total amateur), you must not heat the blade enough to cause a color change, which is what will ruin the temper of the steel, and that level of heat is way too hot to touch with the naked hand. So, just go slow and don't let it get too hot to touch...
