Please read the rules (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1837-Drill-of-the-Week) before participating in this thread.

Week 76: Variable Scoring No.1
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Friday 9-August-2013.

Range: 7yd
Target: IPSC A-zone, IDPA -0 zone, or 8.5x11 sheet of paper
Start position: holstered
Rounds fired: 5 (6 if starting from ready position)

We continue our examination of different scoring systems (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?8740-Time-Plus-and-how-fast-is-fast-enough) and how they impact training with a single simple drill that we'll then score multiple different ways. This week's version uses an all-or-nothing target. Either you hit and get maximum points or you miss and get zero points.

If you are using a holster, draw and fire five rounds at the target on the buzzer. If you are shooting from a ready position, fire six rounds. Record your hits and your time.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

starting position (ready, competition holster, duty holster, or concealed)
gun & holster used
number of hits
time

Then calculate your "score" based on different scoring systems:

IDPA: raw time and add 2.5 seconds for each miss

KSTG: raw time and add 5.0 seconds for each miss

USPSA: 1677

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Shouldn't the USPSA formula be Hits*5 - 10 points per miss/time?

So if you go five for five it'd be 5*5/time, but if you had two misses it'd be (3*5)-20/time.

It's been so long since I shot a USPSA match I forgot all about the miss penalty. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I even ever knew there was such a penalty. Time-Plus for the win.

I'll edit the instructions so you can account for your inevitable misses correctly.

Concealed
Smith & Wesson M&P9, Blade-Tech IDPA holster, open front concealment.
Target used: 8 ½ x 11 paper

I made two runs, one had a miss so now I can compare how a miss affects the score with different systems. My first run was a 3.21 seconds clean, and the second run was 3.06 with a miss.

IDPA: run 1: 3.21, run 2: 5.56
KSTG: run 1: 3.21, run 2: 8.21
IDPA: run 1: 7.79, run 2: 3.27

Lesson learned: Don’t miss!

IDPA: run 1: 3.21, run 2: 5.56 (3.21/5.56 = 57.7%)
KSTG: run 1: 3.21, run 2: 8.21 (3.21/8.21 = 39.0%)
USPSA: run 1: 7.79, run 2: 3.27 (3.27/7.79 = 41.9%)

So, in the spirit of comparing the penalization of misses between the scoring systems of the three games, and without thinking very deeply about it, it looks like your score (with a miss) became almost twice as bad in IDPA, more than twice as bad in KSTG, and also more then twice as bad in USPSA. In this instance, the order of punitivity of the three games is IDPA, USPSA, KSTG, and USPSA and KSTG were much more similar to each other than either was to IDPA.

I didn't do the math, but that was my take on it. No matter the game, misses suck; but in some games they suck more.
