Hard to believe it has been almost 20 years.

Then again, at times it feels like it was 20 lifetimes ago.

One of the guys on my shift at the PD wasn't over there himself, but he was close with some the guys who were smack in the middle of it. When the movie came out, he wouldn't go see it with the group that went.

One of our investigators was there as a Marine. He tells of some baboons (or similar) that carried HIV and would attack people.

Lovely place...

Although it is true that baboons carry HIV (and have some HUGE, nasty fangs), it is a Simian strain and not communicable to humans. My mom has done a lot of research on SHIV, and said that the moment a strain was found that could jump to humans she was done. She has retired now, and I don't believe HIV/SHIV has crossed to different hosts.

As for BHD - it is really hard to watch without getting a big not in your gut.

It's a wonderfully crafted flick IMHO. I just can't take the story it tells.

Like "The Sandpebbles" all over again. Magnificent film, but it kicks too hard. :(

We don't learn from history it would seem.

Still, if they decide to harass and annoy you, you cannot shoot them, or risk getting feces thrown at you until you are beyond their range. (Which is actually much further than those monkeys at the local zoo)

No.

Or rather, I haven't seen anything in the last 20 years to indicate otherwise.

My wife has never been able to watch BHD because although the lads were young, she knew they were tracking to that career field. Now with one deployed and the other training at Bragg; forget it or anything similar. I watched it then and watch it from time to time; as a sacrament.

Glad I'm not the only one that gets dust in his eyes when watching BHD, especially the Shughart/Gordon scene. It may be about time to go back and reread the book.

I shed tears every week for troops I've never met. More names just today. http://www.militarytimes.com/article/20130725/NEWS/307250024/3-Fort-Stewart-soldiers-killed-Afghanistan-blast

My Sis grew up with Dominic Pilla. Understandably, its not a movie that she or my mom are thrilled to watch.

And the ones who don't make it home intact. Here in SA I get daily reminders in the form of disabled veteran plates and young men with prosthetics, wheelchairs, or burn scars. I'm glad we have facilities like SAMMC, BAMC and Center for the Intrepid to help get them fixed up.
