View Full Version : CCW difference between Glock 17 and 19 is it substantial?

I was curious if the Glock 19 is substantially more concealable then 17. I have yet to carry either but I have carried an M&P .40 IWB and find it plenty comfortable to where it's never been an issue. If the 17 is no more difficult then the M&P I'd probably just go with that.

Depends on the holster, person, garment, etc. I find the G19 is significantly easier to conceal than a 17. YMMV.

I carried a 17 for CCW for a long time, then went to the 19. The differences to me are subtle but they are there. I find the 19 easier to conceal but not to any significant degree, and if it weren't around I'd carry the 17 without a thought. On the other hand my son-in-law the deputy is issued a G22, same size as the 17. He says he finds the 19 to be quite a bit easier to conceal and carry. Lots of variables there to look at based on size, build, holsters, etc.

+1 and to the OP with less experience carrying a concealed pistol; you will find this to be even more so.

There are far too many variables to declare one concealable and the other not, for Generic Forum Participant #7233. Your size, shape, clothes, belt, and obviously holster all play a role.

Having said that, I think it's fair to say that most folks find the G19 easier to conceal with a wider variety of clothes & gear. It's one of the smallest "full size guns" on the market.

G19 is substantially easier to conceal in AIWB, less so in IWB, and not much different in OWB as compared to G17.
I found no appreciable difference between G17 and MP9.
Those are personal, sample of one, observations, of course.

What everybody else said, basically. I've concealed the Glock 17 with no problems but the shorter butt of the G19 makes it just that much easier to conceal and that seems to be the case for a lot of folks. The Glock 19, to paraphrase Todd, is basically a full-size gun that conceals like a compact gun. That makes it very, very popular with people who want to conceal "biggish" service-size guns for concealment purposes. There's a reason some very savvy folks cut down their G17s to G19 grip length. They conceal better.

The shorter grip length is why I went with an HK P2000 recently instead of a P30. Although I give up two rounds in magazine capacity and a few other features like bigger mag release and more ergonomic-friendly grip, for me the shorter butt is a real plus in a gun that is concealed most of the time. Mileage may vary with body types, carry style, holsters, etc.

For me, the barrel length is not an issue, just grip length; I find a G19 grip, whether on an actual G19 or a cut down G17 to be easier for me to conceal.

EDC gen4 G19, duty and concealed.

I wouldn't say it's "substantially" easier to conceal, but it's enough so to edge out the G17 for most people and methods. If you want a one-gun solution for tasks where larger guns have advantages but still need concealability, the G19 has the edge there as well.

I believe the G19 to be the most size efficient, high capacity, shootable, concealable fighting 9mm.

I mirror what others have said. I carry IWB so barrel length doesn't matter.

The smaller grip is probably 50% easier to conceal for me. Tee-shirt or Polo will conceal the 19 while I need a jacket or vest to conceal the 17.

I actually have a 17 cut to a 19 grip that is my favorite carry. Been thinking about having my 34 cut down.

The shorter grip of the G19 prints less.

I carry an RMR equipped Glock 17 99% of the time (I also have an RMR equipped 19). I don't, personally, find one easier to carry over the other. Each person is different, though. The 17 isn't for everyone (I picked it because my gorilla hands fit better on it). Pick the one you are willing to carry the most.

G19 is substantially easier for me to conceal--so much so that I have never even tried to carry a concealed G17 outside of my house.

The shorter grip prints less for me too, I carry a Gen 4 G19 daily but have carried my Gen 4 G17 as well.

As much as I have friends who say there's no difference, for me personally not being a large guy the G19 is much easier to conceal, both in AIWB and behind the hip 4 30 carry.

Same for me, and the 26 is even easier.

I'm gonna provide a slightly different spin to the answers above (I agree that all things being even, the G19 is slightly easier to conceal, but it's really not that big of a difference between the two)-the G17's butt rear backstrap curvature is significantly different than that on the G19, provisding a slightly diffferent grip/feel/index-so I think the most significant differentiation between the 2 is how an individual shooter indexes/shoots with each-which ever provides the best empirical results is the one to go with; concealibility is easy to achieve with either.

I personally carry both, but am slightly preferential to the G19-and I've had excellent shooting results with both, so for me, it's whichever works on a given day, or whichever I'm concentrating on in a given period.

For me it is clothing dependent.

I can hide a G19 in the summer while wearing a T-shirt and shorts, using a Milt Sparks Summer Special or similar IWB holster, which is my preferred holster for striker fired pistols. I have hidden a G19 well enough that other shooters looking for my gun think that I forgot to put it on that day. I can not hide a G17 that well.

In the winter I tend to go back to the 17 because it's easy with the clothing I wear and I shoot the bigger gun slightly better.

At the risk of muddying the water, I find a Glock 19 cut to 26 butt length to be extremely concealable and shootable. I can choose anything from a flat 26 magazine, to a 26 with a Pearce extender, to a 26 mag with a +2 plate, to 19 or 17 magazines depending upon what I am trying to accomplish. If I only could have 3 handguns -- with 2 17's and the chopped 19, I could pretty much do it all.

I find the 19 easier to conceal but choose to carry my 17 (AIWB) instead. Some of my clothes aren't as 17 friendly but in these cases, I switch from my JM Custom (w/ extra tuck) to the Raven VG2 instead of switching guns.

And yet another viable alternative is a G34-despite the longer slide, it's very easy to carry concealed also, and the receiver is identical to the G17.

Who cut that grip down for you? Please show us a picture.

For Me!
I find that barrel length really doesn't matter. 5 inch to 3.5
Its all about the grip length for me. and when I bend .

I find compact Hi Cap 9mm/40cal Pistol best for me.

Like the Sig P229 12rd 40cal height is 5.4

The G17 height is 5.43

G19 is 4.99

P30 is 5.43

The G17 height is close to my hammer fired P229

Cookie, what brand / model trousers do you wear? I've been trying to find pants that would allow a G26 to be easily drawn from the left front pocket but thus far, no joy.

I wear these daily. I used to wear Carhartts but kept blowing out the crotch on those. Wearing these for a year, super comfortable and durable. My work is business casual so they get by.

I have a pair of the estimator pants and the G26 fits but the pocket isn't as deep so if you peek you see some grip.

I carry the 17 for the same reason as you and simply 'dress for success' (successful concealment, that is). The 19's grip is just too short for my hand and feels uncomfortable to me because of that.

I have an easy time concealing a 19/23/32 in a tshirt, but going to a longer grip than that starts printing if I wear Summer clothes. The 17/22 frame definitely changes things for me.
