My fiance and I will be maintaining AZ residency and AZ CCW permits but will be spending the next year or so in the NoVA area. We are interested in taking the lecture portion of the CCW class in order to learn the local carry laws for VA and the surrounding areas.

Can you guys recommend any instructors in the area?

Cheers,
David

Contact John Murphy at FPF Training.

He runs basic and intermediate handgun courses in Culpeper, VA that will most likely suit your needs.

And I'd second that recommendation.

Thanks guys. I will certainly keep him in mind. I know we are looking forward to taking his September class with Kathy Jackson.

In the last 10 or so years of active CCW, I have had the luxury of living in gun-friendly states (AZ, FL, CO). I understand that NoVA is not particularly gun friendly, and less-so the areas across the river. We are looking for something classroom-centric or at least some material that can explain, in plain English, the in's and outs of carrying in this particular region.

NoVa isn't any different than the rest of Virginia. It's still gun friendly. Virginia has firearm preemption (just like AZ, FL, and CO), which precludes localities from having firearms laws that are more restrictive than state law.

VSP provides a summary of VA firearm law on it's site: http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms.shtm

Another positive nod towards John Murphy. I'm eager to take another one of his courses but it looks like it might not be until late fall.

And yet another one for John Murphy. Took his CCW class earlier this year and just wrapped up a half-day private carbine course with him. Hoping to take his full carbine class in the fall.
