Just picked her up today, need to find a gunsmith to make it dao, maybe some new grips, and front sight. The action is very smooth, not as light as a Smith but smooth non the less. I'll take her to the range tomorrow and see how well I can shoot it.

well heres why I did what I did, I needed to avoid MIM hammers so I can make it DAO and the 686 and 686 plus have MIM hammers. The 686 SSR does not but it is also $$$$ and I don't love the way it looks. The GP100 has a forged hammer and it was much less expensive not to mention I think it is a sexy beast. If you had a GP at the shop you know I would have been there in a heart beat. If there is one thing that I am it is loyal and your the only game in town as long as im not lookin for a GP100. hahaha

I'd planned on picking up one of these next year after taxes. But one came available that I couldn't pass on. About 75 rounds through it. Came with 2 extra mags, incl the 17. $400. A guy bought for his wife, but she didn't like it.
This will be my new EDC. I'll keep the LCP for a BUG.

No place exotic- Illumination Rock massif, Oregon, last winter, about halfway up the SE Arete. A peak that has alluded me a record consecutive 4 times, now... I've bailed halfway up twice, once due to conditions, once due to a panicking partner, and twice rejected by hostile weather. But this year, dammit! This year we'll get it.

Nice...I was going to volunteer to be your caretaker, then I thought...Wyoming in the winter and Texas in the summer? Naaaah... :p

ObOnTopic: the gun's just a M70 Featherweight in 308, but I think I lucked out with a nice piece of wood. The scope is a Vortex Viper HD II 1-6x. It looks a little funny on a bolt gun, but the glass is friggin' amazing. At least I think so, I'm no scope expert. But the eyebox is forgiving and the images are ridiculously crisp. At 1x it looks waaay better than my H1. I'll have to play with it, but I think this is a worthwhile experiment for a carryin'-around-in-the-woods kind of rifle, hunting pigs and such. I'll have a good time finding out. :D

Testing the two different boxes of old ammo earlier this year :

One box I recall having seen with the gun back in the 1980s when the old Colt was in my dad's safe.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b109/IV_Troop/134.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b109/IV_Troop/127.jpg

One box was sent from an online buddy who is not only a great resource for such things but is also quite the subject matter expert when it comes to .38 supers and in this case a pre- Super pistols(as well as a pre 1911s).

It is quite interesting to compare the old 1903, a bone stock 1911 and a modern 1911A1 all together and see the evolution.

For those who may not be aware, the .38 Colt and .38 Super case are essentially the same size. That being said, the old .38 Colt guns were not designed to operate at the higher pressures of that the Super cartridge is capable of being loaded to.

Though the sights are tiny, using the fundamentals, it is still a capable pistol:

70-200 f/2.8 L IS II

I was actually still working as a profesional fashion photographer when those came out, and I remember lusting after one badly, not that my 1st gen was bad, just cause. That kind of fell by the wayside at about the same time my marriage did. Was weird to go from doing that as a job to not even owning a camera other than the one on my phone. Ah well.

I owned one of the original 70-200/2.8 IL lenses. It fell out of my camera bag, rolled down a slope, and plopped into a river in Montana. Canon said it was unsalvageable. I've since replaced it with the II and probably haven't taken a hundred pictures with it. Hopefully once the weather gets warmer I'll have a chance to hit some more matches and classes where I'll spend more time behind the camera.

Nice car. Late model mustangs are a great platform. I have this habit of making my project cars loud, hot, and generally useless for anything other than whacking the gas pedal.....but I do love driving it. Its still got plates, insurance and gets driven to work every now and then.

Having found one for a price that was irresistible, I treated myself to a 1978 vintage Dan Wesson 15-2.

http://i.imgur.com/4OFNI.jpg

And because I wanted it to be both awesome and hilariously impractical, I also ordered an extra heavy 6" barrel shroud from EWK Arms.

http://i.imgur.com/9krwC.jpg

It weighs almost 4lbs with the heavy barrel shroud but I'm looking forward to comically low amounts of recoil due to the weight of the gun. After nothing but "practical" gun purchases, this gun's justification is nothing more than fun.

Yes, bought for a hair over MSRP on a Mk25 standard model. As a true Limited Edition, doubtful many folks will see them. They are not available to dealers so they won't be on the shelves. You just need to rock that thing at SHOT like that. With all the "assault weapon" buying sprees, I may dump my 7.62 x39 Galil SAR to buy a fully engraved Colt SAA or 1911.

Odin Bravo One
12-20-2012, 12:46 AM
Yeah, if I could get in the door like that! That, and if I was actually going. Since the little lady can't go, and I plan on taking a few weeks off after the midget shows up in April, figured I would save my vacation days for that instead. But next year..........little lady (aka Lil' Miss LV) will be ready to go, and we will burn it down. Again. And my liver will catch the first flight out, while the rest of my body continues the defilement.

I may dump a few things myself while the prices are outrageous. Hard to pass up watching stupid people being stupid. Especially if I can benefit from it!!!

Still, the original point................the gun really does look sharp, and my phone just doesn't do justice. Perhaps I will experiment over the weekend with a real camera and lighting and see if I can get some better shots of it. And once the holster rolls in, I'll publish a few of the complete package. Then you can invite me to a TX Bbq where people wear their BBQ guns and such. And I can house hunt, and job hunt while I am there!

Dagga Boy

I'll miss seeing you at SHOT. When you come to Texas to visit we can wear our BBQ guns. Seems I am the only guy in Dallas who has multiple BBQ gun rigs. Figures the Jewish dude from California fell for the whole "you got to have a BBQ rig" thing...;).

I am actually trying to get picked up as a reserve in a rural area. I have already made arrangements with the local Texas Ranger for getting a full prison death row made set of fancy leather and buckle and grip set. I'll be rolling a MARS 1911 in it......

Odin Bravo One

I need one of those rigs too!!! Thinking of getting my 627 full on engraved, and some prison leather would match it perfectly. Send pics!! Of course, the MARS could use a full rig of PL too.

My favorite memory of SWAT School in Maricopa County was the tour I got on the weekend, watching the inmates sewing/repairing their own stripes and pinks. I certainly didn't/don't agree with all of Joe's politics, but there was no arguing the way he ran the confinement facility.

They could only be ordered factory direct. Pretty sure the window has closed. And there was a specific promo code that was required to place the order. Sig dealers could not order them unless they had the promo code (which most didn't), and they were not available for retail sale. Mine may make it up to highest bidder at some point in my life, perhaps college tuition for the unborn son, but I really dig it, so it is highly unlikely I will part with it.

Glass is the Leupold VX6, 1-6x with the Firedot reticle in a LaRue QD Mount, and custom engraving on both of the turret caps. I didn't ask for it, but the folks at Leupold took the liberty, and it is appreciated.

Pretty happy with this set up for a GP carbine. Time will tell, and more rounds necessary to really wring out the combo, but I am logging the data for once, and will have a complete write up by March 1st of next year.

ive yet to get to a track but TOD is a blast.

Sigh. That spot was maybe 20-30 minutes from my house, via Foothills Parkway.

I had the TL Thou' parked in that very place practically weekly for a while...

Everything's all flat and straight and square corners where I live now. :(

My new Colts; the left gun was still stock when this was taken, the right gun has had a Techwell TGO magwell added to it. Since I took this, the left gun has had the factory stocks changed out for matching Techwell grips with the "carry" magwell.

oh cool, that would have been fun to have that road 30min from your house.

its a lot more interesting than the flat straights i live near too. oh well.

asked a local if there was a gun range near TOD, actually drew me a map. unfortunately it was inaccessible with that car and i never did find it. i bet that would have been interesting.

Took my oldest shooting for the first time yesterday. That was the most fun I've ever had at the range.

Talking about stance, grip, sight alignment, and trigger control (dry gun):

Don't worry, you aren't the first to say that :D

I am definitely a function over form kind of guy. The grip gives me everything I want when gripping the gun (a very aggressive texture) and everything I want when carrying the gun in a holster against the skin (lack of aggressive texture). I have run some pretty aggressively stippled guns (using traditional methods) to get the type of grip I wanted, but they weren't as comfortable to carry, and had issues grabbing at clothing. May not believe it looking at it, but this texture doesn't do that. Clamp down on it with your hands though and it doesn't move.

I picked up the 870 this past Monday, patterned it with a few loads on Tuesday, and installed the magpul stock on Saturday. I really like the way the new stock feels; I have it set up on the shortest length of pull right now and I think that's where it will stay. The grip angle feels so much better than the factory piece.

I wasn't sure about the looks at first, but it's growing on me

So far I've put Federal XM127 00AC (http://www.glensoutdoors.com/Federal-XM127-00AC-12Ga-Tactical-00-Buck-Shot-p/xm12700ac.htm) 9 pellet 00 buck, Winchester 'military grade' (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2900857119/winchester-military-grade-ammunition-12-gauge-2-3-4-buffered-00-buckshot-9-pellets) 00 buck and Winchester Ranger slugs (http://www.policehq.com/Products/W-RA12RS15) down the pipe. The pic below shows the pattern with the Fed XM127, 10 shots @ 7 yards in roughly the size of my fist. The Winchester military grade was easily double that.

Drang,

I had a chance to shoot the 870 w/magpul stock tonight and I like it. I may try adding one insert (currently set at shortest LOP).

Additionally, there is a little rubber piece that covers where the stock mounts to the receiver and it has a small recess - almost like a thumb rest... Don't place your thumb there in shortest LOP config while shooting slugs; you'll only do it once ;)

Patterned three more loads through it tonight, and that Federal XM127 still shoots best through mine; I need to find some more.

Engineers...bless their little hearts.

The lighted, spinning wheel of JMB would make an awesome centerpiece for the dining room table.

When my lotto number comes up one of my fondest wishes is to have a circular table made of some exquisite wood and set into the wood there'd be a series of recesses for a dozen or so mint condition artillery spec Lugers of various vintage. Each individually lit and the whole she-bang covered with some protective glass.

Sweet.

So are you comparing Tam to the 9 year olds who get pissed and call me a "NOOb" for using better tactics on CoD? Not very friendly of you TC.......

Yeah, engineers............. they can pull of some pretty cool stuff........ if you can get them to stop thinking about it and just do it already!!!!

How much extra should I charge for an author autographed version? How much should I add for Hackathorn's signature?

Damn skippy!

I didn't say Portland..............I don't blame you for hating it. I have never cared for it either. I don't like the city. Even little cities like Portland, and the never ending mini-Portlands lining the I-5 corridor.

No, no, no.........I hit PDX, to 205 South, to 84 EASTBOUND............past Multnomah Falls...............past Mt. Hood...........and stop when I get to the eastern edge of her foothils. I don't know what the latest official census is, but if it's over 10k, it's barely over. The river on the northern edge of town for the numerous recreational activities it provides. Fishing, boating, jetski, waterski, windsurf. 45 min south, Deschutes River for it's activities. World class fly fishing, rookie level white water rafting, rattlesnake dodging. 20 min west, then 30 min south, Cooper Spur/Mt. Hood Meadows/Cloud Cap, and the various western slope hiking/skiing/mountain recreation areas. 20 minutes due south into populations of Belding's Ground Squirrel, which is where I can be found if I make it back there between March and July.

No cell coverage. No daily grind. No watch or clock. No stop lights. No traffic jams. Just fields of wild flowers and grasses, forests of Douglas Fir and Pondersa Pine, hill sides of scrub oak, and my favorite............................the acrobatic beauty of wildlife in motion ...........followed by the gray and red mist lingering in the air after a 17 grain VMAX rips through the noggin of digger after digger.

Now I just need to figure out how I can get paid for that, and I'll have a job when I retire.

Round trip tickets to PDX from here run around $1400 each. Not expensive..........but not "cheap". Certainly more than the cost of a tank of gas. I'll get there when I have both the time, and the money to do it without disrupting daily life. That's just not going to be this year.

"N00b."

My collecting is pretty low-impact aerobics. With the exception of the kar. 98AZ, maybe the byf 43 98k, and a few U.S. martial pieces, I don't know that many of my long guns are currently worth more than a few hundred bucks. (But lor' bless those U.S. martial arms; I wish I could go back in time ten or fifteen years and tell myself to buy every M1 carbine and M1917 rifle I could get my hands on...)

Both Smith revolvers and old military rifles are pretty easy on the wallet to collect; it's not like I'm stocking up on Lugers or Peacemakers...

About 250 rds of .38 special just loaded on the Lyman turret press. Took about 1 hr to do 100rds. Much different than the Dillon 650

Loaded with a 148gr wad cutter cast by my father when I was 8 months old. Used Bullseye powder he purchased in 1975 at the price of $22 for a 4 pound keg. Shoots great in the 442 and produces about 760fps using 3.8gr
I thought it was pic worthy.

Smith & Wesson No.2 "Old Army". The barrel has been cut down and it is marked as being engraved by Geo. Spring. (Not the current Colt's master engraver, apparently, but his dad?) While the engraving was almost certainly done last century, the serial number dates the gun to ~1861. I need to get it lettered.

It's pretty tight for a large-frame tip-up, and it's definitely been fired plenty before, and .32 Rimfire isn't impossible to find (although pretty much anything you get your hands on will be .32 RF Short and not the .32 RF Long this thing uses) but I'm not sure I'll fire this one.

I meant to call you back and let you know - I skipped the Trust for now, since my CLEO is GTG.

There are numerous advantages beyond CLEO, and many disadvantages to personally owning NFA items, versus the trust owning them.......maybe we can talk Sparks2112 into taking a side trip down NFA lane during Sunday's discussion to talk through a few points pertaining to trusts, and NFA ownership.

Yes, please do this...

I'm probably going to file a couple form 1s here in the next few months, and would be very interested in your thoughts on this subject.

I am still going to transfer it into a Trust down the road, but I decided I didn't want a quicky (Quicken) version and having a bullet proof NFA Trust done right now wasn't in the cards.

Girls and math...

If:
1 = 0
2 = 1

3 = 2 + 1

... then ...

2 + 1 = 1

And since 1 = 0, we must conclude that 3 = 0.

This may be old hat for ToddG or Caleb perhaps, but not for me or any of my buddies.

Got a shipment of ammo the other day.

1558

A pallet full of ammo. 55,000+ rounds. That was pretty damn cool.

Unfortunately I couldn't hang on to most of it. It was used in lieu of cash as a partial payment on a job I photographed, so most of it was dispersed to the crew who worked for ammo instead of a check. But still, having that much ammo sit in my garage for a day or two definitely was cool. And who knows, it probably put me on a government watch list or something too.

A few years ago I had a friend helping me move out of a girlfriend's place. We opened the garage where I had my stuff packed, he stopped for a minute, then the conversation went "Chuck, that's a pallet of ammo", "Yes Vic, it is".... "Chuck, that's the coolest thing I've ever seen"

Those were the days.

I'll answer in a bit, as I have a Garthwaite incoming. But right now, the Woods takes the cake (it's got a slot at Garthwaite for a trigger redo, and reprofiling the front sight). The Glenn is a real shooter, though.
