I remember seeing those show up in ads in Shotgun News.
Price was good, I was broke.
A very familiar story, unfortunately.

Several things....

I don't see any plastic.
Where does the clip fit?
How do you attach a light?
How do you attach a laser?

For those that might think I am serious, I joke, relax.

Very nice find.

Anyone not seeing the elegance of that classic are uncivilized louts.

Great pickup Sparks, I am seriously jealous. Almost as jealous as this weekend over a fellow competitor's pristine 3" round butt S&W Mdl 13,my dream gun.

Perhaps when you tire of this blaster you can do a drawing and give it to a past radio show guest?

I don't get it.

It's been quite some time since I posted. You can thank (or curse) jlw for bringing me out from under my rock.

The 686 CS-1's were a contract build for the Customs Service built to a pretty exact set of specifications. There were approximately 3500 made in a 3" and 4" variant. Janet Reno was responsible for destroying around half when the Customs Service went to some form of bottom feeder. Of the roughly 1800 left the 3" is the more desirable of the two. To date it is the ONLY 3", L-frame .357 Magnum S&W has produced in a six shot format. It is considered by many to be the premier example of a fighting revolver.

On a slight tangent, I had three at one time, two 3" and a 4". I sold two and still have a 3". I curse myself every time I think of what they are worth now. :(

A very nice find.

That really is the epitome of what I find desirable in a revolver.

Congrats on your find, and use it in good health.

I don't know if you guys are making me want to sell it, or pass it down to my kid. I need to shoot the thing this weekend. I will say this, the trigger is RIDICULOUS for a factory gun.

I started on the job when we were carrying .357mags (and a few .38s still). We were issuing model 66s at that time, 4" guns, but when I hired on we didn't have enough guns for the whole class to be issued a gun so I carried my 4" stainless Security Six. I bought a 2 3/4" Speed Six to go with it as an off-duty. I still have the Security Six, but was stupid enough to sell the Speed Six to a friend at work who won't sell it back to me.

I lucked into a 4" 681 a couple of years ago, great trigger on my example, very accurate gun. Took a deer with it last year.

For an L frame I'd rather have a 4" barrel, just seems more "right" to me. One of my wants though is a 3" model 65, I really want one. The 3" barrel and the smaller K frame with a round butt also seems more right to me.

They are revered weapons for a reason, my friend.

You managed to snag a gun that S&W revolver aficionados talk of in the same sort of loving tones usually reserved for registered magnums and finely blued pieces that came with Magna grips.

She's a keeper.

That would be my choice in a carry revolver if I had to carry a wheelgun.

Just talked to Smith, it was made in September of 1986, and they haven't seen it since.

A CS-1 is a keeper ..... Don't sell it - you will regret it. I had a 4" (CS-2) and always regretted selling it. I finally found a CS-1 about 15 years ago - it's not going anywhere.

It's my understanding the ones in civilian hands were contract over runs. FLETC had several dozen that were converted to blank guns by having the barrels plugged and used for non FoF scenario training. They also had some CS-2's being used for Revolver familiarization fire.

I had one of these also. I regret selling it now. Not as much as I regret selling the F-Comp....... At one time I had a crap load of really nice Smith's and sold them all in a fit of practicality. Dumb.....

After much consideration, and fondling, I think I'm going to hold onto it for a little while. Anyone have any suggestions on a good revolver guy I could send it to to have it restored and perhaps do something with the sights? Yes I know it's worth more if I leave it alone, if I keep it, it's a working gun though. Someone who doesn't charge an arm and a leg, and isn't at a 6+ month wait time would also be preferable, but I know how that goes...

These were issued with pachmeyer compac rubber grips. The sights are one of the signature features of the CS -1. They were spec'ed by USCS with a narrower front sight blade.

These were spec'ed as working guns. Jim Cirillo was one of the principal designers of the CS -1 / 2 during his second career as a firearms instructor for USCS

Value aside it really is a well thought out set up. Try it before you make any significant changes. As for grip suggestions, I really like the pacmeyers but Spegel boot grips or PPS hideout grips would be great options.

I'm a fan of smooth wood boot grips (Spegel, Esmerelda, Hogue) for a concealed carry revolver that has decent sights.
For J-frames with crappy sights I like laser grips.

Other than a good cleaning what seems to be the issue? Everyone that I know that I would send it to rather than doing it myself doesn't meet the arm & Leg plus backlog criteria.

I just dropped off a couple with Dennis Reichard at http://www.sandburrgunranch.com/

He seems to be pretty guru-y in the S&W wheel gun department. Dunno what his backlog's running, but give him a call...

I picked up a CS-1 at my LGS earlier this year for a good deal and certainly count myself lucky.

The trigger is real nice and this has turned into my nineteen year old daughter's favorite gun.
