Week 71: 99 Drill
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 14-June-2012.

by JodyH
Range: 7-15yd
Target: 3x5" or 4x6" card, see below for details
Start position: holstered, hands relaxed at sides, see below for details
Rounds fired: 99

This was developed as a way to practice fundamentals (marksmanship at speed, draws, and reloads) with limited time and ammunition. Individual drills are shot multiple times to provide actual training benefit rather than just serving as a test of current skill level.

7 yards, 2.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
7 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw, fire one, reload, fire two (10 times, total 30 rounds)
10 yards, 3.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
15 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw and shoot three (3 times, total 9 rounds)

Either 4×6″ or 3×5″ cards can be used as targets. The 3×5 version is obviously significantly more difficult. All shots must be fired before the end of the PAR time; shots fired after the PAR count as misses.

The PAR times are based on running the drill from concealment or a legitimate retention holster. If you want to use an open top style range/competition holster, deduct one half second from the PAR for each string draw string and one second for the draw & reload string (2.0, 4.0, 3.0, and 4.5). If your range does not allow drawing from a holster, reduce the PAR for each string of fire by one second (so 1.5, 4.0, 2.5, and 4.0) and shoot it from a ready position.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Start position (concealed, retention holster, competition holster, or ready position)
target used (3x5 or 4x6)
score for each of the four strings of fire
total score

I know this is a more ammo-intensive than most of the DotWs lately. However, I believe that even if it's the only live fire you do all week, this drill hits all the major areas -- speed, accuracy, draw, reload -- does it under time pressure, and gives you enough reps of each exercise to build up some good practice.

Don't look at it as something to shoehorn into your regular routine. Look at it as a way to break from your routine.

Second drill with the P30 V1 I'm still trying to get used to the trigger(obviously). I need to do way more dry practice with the reloads as I flubbed several of them today.

I'm pretty sure that's the worst I've ever done on this drill. As discussed in my training journal, I was working with a completely different grip technique today and the amount of time I lost getting the gun in my hands before presenting it forward was really forcing me to rush. I'd also just removed the high-viz orange front sight paint and for some reason thought this drill would be a perfect way to reacquaint myself with a black/tritium-dot sight. Or not.

I absolutely could have done better. I did not use my time wisely on many reps, finishing with almost a second to spare in one case.

Ammo drought has really cut into my range time and it shows.
My usual score 6 months ago was mid-80's with the P2000, high 70's with the P2000SK.
Accuracy at distance was good.
Reloads with the stubby SK mags were slow enough that the last shot was always over par.

Procedural question -- as I have never done this drill, how do you do it? Use multiple 3x5 cards, a PF target and tape or replace, or another way?

I tend to use a Q-PT but anything will suffice so long as you can accurately count actual in-time hits.

I use a single 3x5 in the middle of a IPSC silhouette and tape up misses between strings.
If it gets too shot up before all 99 are fired I replace it with a new card.

Thanks for tips on the drill, I ended up replacing the PF target as things got too shot/taped up. Can't believe I hadn't done this one before. Initially I tried to fit into this morning's practice session, but quickly realized it "is the practice session." Did it this afternoon. Got fatigued and had performance get worse in individual tests, and didn't use all my time well.

It has been awhile since I shot my G17, since I usually train/carry the 19, but I wanted to run my new SME with the full size gun for break in. Love the new holster, and the low ride and tucked butt don't slow me down as much as I thought they would.

I shot the drill cold, and had a bunch of extra time on the 15yd strings. I decided to run the 15yd strings 7 more times, and ran it clean 3 times and -1, via miss, 4 times.

I was feeling ammo rich so I ran this drill twice. First time was on Saturday, and then again last night. Used same equipment for both runs, M&P9 with Blade-Tech holster.

HK P30 V3 from 5 Shot SME from under a t-shirt

S1: missed 5 shots, had the time to clean up the sight picture but yanked the shots anyway.
S2: smooth sailing, finished in the area of 4.25-4.50
S3: first 3 shots formed an awesome 1 inch group in ~2.75 seconds just north of the card........... got pissed off and missed several shots after that. Thought I should actually put the bumpy things on the gun over the card.
S4: put two rounds right there, but the grease ring did not touch, so close.

Ran it again today after the Week 72 DotW because I was feeling fast on the 3x5 at 7yd.

start position: SACS/Warren 9mm 1911 in JMCK aiwb under polo shirt
target used: 3x5
score for each of the four strings of fire: 29, 27, 27, 8
total score: 91

All the misses on string 2 (reloads) were due to a change I made in my technique that cost me time because it has to happen on a conscious level for me at this point. So I had three instances in which the target turned away before I could fire my last shot.

The string 3 (10yd) misses were a real disappointment. I dropped two shots on the tenth and final run. I'd been doing a good job of using my time, not rushing, and then on the last exposure bamm! I pulled a Barry Allen. Bad Todd, no cookie.
