OK so that really means I'm a FED GOVT desk jockey who's job series is Statistician (whatever that means). The tactical part is just for fun because I like to read sites like this. I work in the wastewater division in aeration and biological nutrient removal for municipal wastewater treatment plants. To put in laymen's terms, I design ways to stir up shit . I also work part time behind a gun counter.

In past lives, I have worked as a custom gunsmith, an armorer and trainer, spent several years in financial services with JP Morgan Chase and worked in marine services (engine room work on supertankers and container cargo ships) with brief stints as a machinist and a CNC operator.

Well the guys that work for me get to do that, I mostly have to polish a chair with my butt these days and watch budgets and performance reviews and other such crap instead of getting to have fun in the medical research fields. Management ain't all it's cracked up to be...who knew?

I'm a clinical analytical chemist by degree(s) and many years training post grad school. I could probably pass for a molecular biologist or biochemist pretty easily but not by formal degree, but certainly by experience. What I do is called esoteric testing within my field so that's an excellent description.

When you hear people talk about personalized medicine that's what I do. I can tell you exactly how your body will react to a given drug or class of drugs or if you fall into certain genetic classifications that can predispose you to "issues". Some of the drugs we see are so specific I have to be able to distinguish between patients that are true suffers of a specific illness and others, that may share the exact same symptoms, that are not suffering from that specific illness, usually at the genetic level.

I can also use a specific type of mass spectrometer to monitor how your body metabolizes specific drugs in the presence of thousands of other chemicals, very accurately and precisely. This allows us to monitor for toxicity during dosing and ongoing chemotheraphy, which isn't just for cancer. I can also trap active cancer cells out of your blood and tell you if a specific type of chemo is working for you or not and follow that chemo until the cancer is truely gone. This is very likely to make it into mainstream medicine in the next few years, it's a very powerful tool for fighting cancer along with all of the molecular therapys being developed.

It's a booming field with never enough people trained to truely work in it. It takes me months and in some cases years to recruit qualified people to do this level of work.

That's not me!!!! I'd tell you not to take that crap or to take plenty of CoQ10 with it, those meds have too many side effects for my taste. Here's a tip, if your back starts to hurt a lot more than normal while taking those statin type meds then stop taking them and go tell your doctor you need a different solution.

I'd also tell you that high cholesterol is more a product of your genetic make up than your diet. You absolutely need cholesterol, it's the precursor to all of your steroid hormones...i.e. testosterone...hint...so if you use a drug to get rid of it stupid shit can happen...

not medical advice, that only comes from your doctor, just saying.

I'm a state liscensed electrical contractor and master electrician. I typically work in retail grocery stores and big tenant high rises doing everything from replacing a receptacle to installing an energy management system to troubleshooting a lighting control/dimming system.

The beauty of this trade is there is always something new and different. I've had my hand into everything from digging ditches to doing a slab up build; industrial controls, custom houses, even (my personal favorite) wiring up a honest-to-God log lodge for a guy that had pretty much an unlimited budget. I could go on and on for quite some time about the level of detail and innovative methods we came up with to meet his standard of quality.

Other than playing around with stuff than playing around with stuff that can get me or someone else killed and driving around in Atlanta traffic, ehich I personally find more dangerous, my life is pretty boring. :)

You'd love our water cooler talk then, there's no telling what we'll be asked to look at next or why and you certainly never question the value of the work you are doing. Even though nobody ever knows what we do because of the NDAs and all the secrecy agreements we have to sign to actually work on some of these things. I don't think I've ever driven home asking myself why I went to school for so long to do such and such a job. I've had a few of those as well, cleaned floors for K-mart between my BS and grad school, that'll build character, nothing like cleaning the public restrooms at a K-mart at 4AM on a Saturday morning...it'll certainly motivate you to get back into school.

I used to work for a "big 5" accounting firm in their data center, helping manage 1200 servers globally. When new management took over and everyone got pigeonholed, I left there.

Now I work at a mid-sized museum in delaware (DuPont money!) in a 7 person IT department as their server/network/AD/Exchange/DBA/Citrix/SAN guy. It affords me lots of flexibility as a dad of a 3yo, and as someone with stomach issues.

Lots of work from home, and server maintenance when it is convenient (tuesday nite? sure, why not!)

Also, the work is varied enough to keep challenging me, keeping me from getting bored out of my skull.

Been there 5 years, and I'd be a fool to leave.

I now work part time for a landscaper as a foreman, part time doing custom digging and installation of trees, and about a year away from being a Certified Arborist. While not the career, or tax bracket, that I was planning on being in, I have to admit I love it. I can make time to coach HS track and cross country, which in my book is pretty effin awesome.

I have a rhel box I never touch, management of it is outsourced, but I pushed for it - no reason not to use the best tool for that job. Also just put in a ubuntu box running ossec for some IDS - it's good to get back and do some things. apt-get is really incredible.

Mainly I put food on the table by buying it. I also take a lot of customers out to business lunches and dinners in which case I pay someone else to put it on the table. In addition, if the food is hot I put it on the table carefully.

Power Engineer/Firearms Instructor/Semi Pro Shooter
I run the steam boilers at a local feed plant as well as a couple other machines in the facility. Basically Homer Simpson's job, I sit and watch dials and gauges all day, waiting for alarms to go off and then clearing them. On a bad day I have to hump it up and down 7.5 stories of stairs multiple times, and occasionally climb 250ft legs multiple times. But thankfully not too often (although more would probably help the waistline).
As for the Firearms Instructor/Semi Pro Shooter, I teach a weekly class at my local range (of which I'm the President currently), arrange other instructors to come up, teach private lessons to LEO/Mil and civilians, plus I get my gear, ammo, guns and most travel paid for to attend IPSC matches up here and around the planet. Funny part is, I'm good here, but outside of Canada I'm kinda average.
I'm tempted to jump in full scale with the teaching, but even with our recent election, I'm wary of sudden political changes that would destroy my job. Plus the benefits at the feed plant are top notch.

That's a hell of a way to make a living. It's got to be pretty emotional on a pretty regular basis.

Haha I though so, I knew a guy who worked in a movie theater and jokingly said he was a light placement specialist or something like that.

Are you moving to Orofino?

I applied there a couple times early in my career, but there wasn't much need for an ME down there. Had a job offer at Leupold as well, but I couldn't handle the commute to Beaverton!! Either of those would have been dream jobs, but it just didn't work out.

As it so happens though...I have some really good contacts (current customers) at Leupold due to my current business.

I am sure you will find out you have more friends now than you ever knew you had...Buddy ;)

I clean carpet and tile, train people at a CrossFit gym, and intern at a local church plant. On top of that I'll do odd jobs for extra cash when I can. Hoping to finish seminary in a few years and get my jobs down to one job in a church somewhere.

My wife is a receptionist at a pediatrician's office. We don't make much, but we don't owe anyone anything. I'm pretty happy with that. Plus it makes me dry fire a lot since I can't afford tens of thousands of bullets like you cats seem to be shooting. Oh well, maybe someday!

Surprisingly enough the Sales and Marketing Office is in Hartwell, GA. The building is nondescript so you really can't go hunting it.. it took me a few passes to find it for the first interview.

Cool - it's nice not to have to relocate, and Orofino isn't really much of a town.
