Week 64: Cold F.A.S.T.
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Friday 26-April-2013.

Please read the rules (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1837-Drill-of-the-Week) before participating in this thread.

designed by Todd Louis Green
Range: 7yd
Target: 8" circle and 3x5 card (see here (http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/fast-target.pdf) for a downloadable target; this target must be printed on an 8.5x14 "legal" sheet of paper)
Start position: concealed, hands relaxed at sides (see below for alternatives)
Rounds fired: 18

You must complete this drill before any other practice or other shooting that day. In other words, these must be the first eighteen rounds you fire on the day you record your results.

Pistol begins with exactly two rounds in the gun. Draw should be from underneath legitimate concealment (see below for alternatives). Arms must be relaxed with hands at your sides (not on the gun).

On the buzzer, draw and fire two rounds at the 3x5 card.
Reload from slidelock/empty gun.
Fire four rounds to the 8" circle.

Repeat for a total of three runs (18 rounds).

Do not fire extra rounds. Shots intended for the 3x5 that hit the 8", or vice versa, count as misses.

Scoring is as follows:
Total time + 2s penalty for each 3x5 shot missed + 1s penalty for each 8" shot missed

The drill is intended to be shot from legitimate concealment or with a duty/retention holster. Even when shot with a duty holster, start position is arms at sides (not "interview" stance). Score is modified as follows based on carry method:

Concealed: no penalty
retention holster with closed (snap or velcro) mag pouches: 0.5 second bonus (subtraction) per 6-shot run
retention holster with open top mag mag pouches: no penalty or bonus
ALS, SERPA, or Thumb Drive (or similar) holster without concealment: 0.5 second penalty (addition) per 6-shot run
open top holster without concealment: 3 second penalty (addition) per 6-shot run

If your range does not allow drawing from a holster, begin with the gun on a table with no round in the chamber (two in the magazine). On the start signal, pick up the gun, rack the slide, and shoot the drill. Reload from underneath concealment.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

starting position (concealed, duty, open holster, or tabled)
make & model of gun
type of holster (if applicable)
time and hits for string 1
time and hits for string 2
time and hits for string 3
aggregate score

I didn't have an 8" circle so used an 8" high 6" wide oval instead.

starting position: concealed under untucked polo
make & model of gun: SACS/Warren 9mm 1911
type of holster (if applicable): 5 Shot SME and CCC BMCs
time and hits for string 1: 8.91 (-1H & -1B, 1.68, .64 / 2.69 / .32, .29, .29)
time and hits for string 2: 5.26 (clean, 1.70, .64 / 2.21 / .25, .22, .24)
time and hits for string 3: 5.22 (clean, 1.53, .55 / 2.42 / .24, .24, .24)
aggregate score: 19.39

That first run was just ridiculous. As someone who prides himself on consistency and the ability to shoot cold it was an excellent way to show off on the DotW. :o

I happened to spot this thread on the way to the range -- although wish I didn't. :)

Gen 4 G17
Fricke Gideon and CCC BMC, concealed under Filson vest.
PF Target

1) 6.09 1.69, 1.15, 2.41, .30, .27, .27
2) 5.50 1.73, .64, 2.29, .31, .25, .28
3) 5.45 1.67, .54, 2.39, .33, .25, .27

17.04

My reloads were horrendous. Somehow my self instruction to shoot carefully must have carried over to my reload speed.

Decided to repeat this drill this morning, first thing to the range.

Glock 17, Fricke Gideon, Filson vest.

1) 5.19 (-1B) 1.72, .62, 2.12, .25, .24, .24
2) 5.11 (-1H) 1.80, .52, 2.08, .26, .24, .21

At this point, I realized I was so preoccupied with my slide stop that I had forgot about that thing on the front of my slide. Told myself to forget about the slide stop and focus on the front sight.

5.12 1.71, .47, 2.15, .29, .26, .24

Then I shot one more (which didn't count for this drill) to verify looking at the front sights helped.

4.53 1.21 .59, 2.00, .28, .23, .22

At the end of my 250 round session, I shot one final "warmed up" FAST:

4.56, 1.53, .38, 1.98, .23, .22, .22

Total for my first 3 runs:

18.42 including 3 seconds in penalties

Total for my last 3 runs, showing using the front sight and warming up helps:

14.21

Nice first shot time! :)

Nice first shot time! :)

Yep, that is what happens when it goes off early -- I was just lucky that it hit. Think my second shot on that FASTest was slower as I had to process the first shot going off early and get back to the rest of the drill.

Makes me want to try a practice session where I try the first shot at the 3x5 at my max eight inch circle speed and see what kind of hit rate I get.

I think that's a worthy exploration.

Ugh, it was entirely too early at 5:30 or whatever time it was when I did this earlier this morning…

3 x Cold FAST for the DotW:

4.02: 1.16, .44 / 1.69 / .27, .24, .22
3.95: 1.19, .46 / 1.61 / .26, .21, .22
4.42: 1.20, .51 / 2.01 / .26, .22, .22

Total: 12.39

http://youtu.be/O0aJq6gAeFo

On the last run I got nervous that I would mess up the good thing I had going and counterproductively stood there staring at the 3x5 hits while I reloaded, screwing up the magazine insertion.

That's the DotW entry. A few more runs and things here: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?2751-OrigamiAK-s-Training-Journal-Mind-Driving-the-Vision-Vision-Driving-the-Gun&p=131395&viewfull=1#post131395

Nice shooting, unless the difference between your runs and mine is solely attributable to the G17 versus the G34. :)

Cold at KSTG...

6.96 (-1H) = 8.96
6.76 (Clean)
6.26 (-1H) = 8.26

Total = 24.01

Glock 17 from strongside Raven Phantom OWB concealed under an unzipped TAD Ranger Hoodie LT.

Todd pointed out that I'm holding the pistol too high during reloads. I think this is an overcorrection from earlier issues with holding the pistol too low during reloads. I'll be practicing some dry reloads and 1R2 until I correct this problem.

Glock 19 gen4, Trij HD sights, Federal AE 124 FMJ (AE9AP). Glock sport/combat holster, 3:00 OWB under a tee shirt.

6.77 clean
7.22 clean
6.93, -3 body, 9.93 w/ penalty. Canked those with lousy trigger press. No excuses.
23.92 aggregate

Shot some other drills, then came back later to a 6.46 clean.

Looked through my practice log and saw that I have not shot the FAST in 6 weeks. While the break from it (and shooting in general, last time at live fired was 3 weeks ago) slowed my times down it seemed to help my consistency. I guess the break meant that coming back into it forced me to focus more on what I was doing and let me pull off three clean runs.

Smith & Wesson M&P, Blade-tec IDPA holster, open front concealment.

6.42 clean (2.30, .56, 2.43, .38, .37, .38)
6.34 clean (2.22, .66, 2.28, .43, .38, .37)
6.50 clean (2.25, .76, 2.42, .37, .35, .35)
Total time: 19.26

My times on the first two shots are about the same as they were a couple months ago. They are already slow enough that they couldn’t get slower. Splits on the 8” circle are a little slower than before. My reloads seem to have suffered most from lack of practice. Looking at my records, I was pretty consistently between 2.05 to 2.15 on my reloads. I will have to see how much regular practice it will take to get back to that point.

It was one of "those days" at the range yesterday where nothing feels quite right.

1) 6.50 clean 1.73, .73, 3.05, .35, .34, .30 = 6.50
2) 5.88 1H 1.80, .71, 2.55, .28, .29, .25 = 7.88
3) 5.69 2H 1.80, .62, 2.25, .37, .33, .32 = 9.69
Aggregate: 24.07 :(

Start position: Concealed, AIWB under tshirt
Gun: S&W M&P9
Holster: JM Custom AIWB

After the FAST I decided to work on those 3x5 hits from the draw with F-PAR Low% (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?5660-Week-49-F-PAR-Low-Pair). Managed to shave .3s off the starting par but there was no consistency at all, with the slowest hit being 1.75 and the fastest being 1.48.

M&P9 Pro (5") in a Comp-Tac OWB under vest.

1) 6.20 (Clean, 1.85, .57, 2.82, .34, .32, .30)
2) 9.63 (-2H, 1.76, .47, 2.65, .28, .24, .23)
3) 5.84 (Clean, 1.74, .45, 3.03, .25, .18, .19)

Total: 21.67s

Haven't run a gun under a vest in a long time. Bobbled my reload every single time, the third time grabbing vest instead of mag.

HK P30 LEM/SME/untucked shirt

Extra super cold with a P30 since I haven't shot this gun in about two months.

5.35 1.83/.82/1.80/.29/.31/.30
4.85 1.62/.61/1.87/.26/.23/.26
7.83 (-3B) 1.59/.69/1.81/.24/.25/.25

=18.03

The four body shots were in a one inch group on the lower left edge of the eight inch circle. Three of the shots were actually touching and had cut through the edge of the circle, so it was difficult to score. I'm kind of flabbergasted as to how this happend, but I didn't really see my sights much because I failed to do a press-out after the reload.
