From Fox: "Major injuries reported after explosions rock a fertilizer plant on the outskirts of Waco, Texas. Initial reports say people are trapped in a nearby nursing home and an apartment building."

Hope it's just a coincidence/accident.

(Reuters) - Authorities in Texas reported a large explosion on Wednesday at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, near Waco, and local media said that there were a number of injuries reported.

The blast, reported shortly before 8 p.m. CDT (0100 GMT on Thursday), was confirmed to Reuters by Waco police dispatch operators, who could not immediately confirm reports of damage or injuries.

The Waco Tribune newspaper, in an online account, quoted an emergency dispatcher calling for multiple ambulances and saying, "we have a lot of injured here."

The Tribune said several buildings were reported to be on fire, including a middle school in West, a town of some 2,700 people about 80 miles south of Dallas and 20 miles north of Waco.

Dang, West is a nice little town, with a lot of Czech folks. They do a neat little town festival every year.

Prayers sent for all those affected.

I am going to chalk this one up to an industrial accident.

Certain dusts, when suspended in air, can be explosive. All it takes is some heat or a little spark and you have a mess.

I've driven by it a hundred times and always meant to stop at the kolache place.
Local news is reporting the blast measured 2.1 on the Richter scale. Initial firefighting efforts were hampered because a lot (most?) of the local FD were in the plant fighting the fire when it blew. Still no solid casualty count but estimates from 5-15 dead and around 200 wounded, much of the town damaged or destroyed.
Thoughts and prayers to those affected.

Seems that way. Fire + big strong containers full of fertilizer = bomb, essentially.

Should be raining there now or will be shortly, not sure if that's a help or hindrance.
Funny thing I remembered : a few years ago they filmed an episode of that "What would you do?" show at the kolache place in West. They had a Muslim woman go in, and had the counter guy go on a rant about how "her people" were killing our soldiers and he wouldn't serve her. Several people stood up for her, including one guy whose son had been killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. He got very emotional, stated that his son didn't die so we could treat people that way. Very moving stuff.
How a prime time TV show ended up in a tiny central TX town I have no idea.

Omw to work, I heard that the rain was making it difficult for helicopters to see what was going on, but I don't think it's hindered any work being done

...probably because some producer in one of the major urban centers who harbors the oft-encountered disdain for anyone not sophisticated enough to want to live in their urban center of choice probably went looking for some good red state stereotype fodder and did some googling.

No doubt, though in the end they came off pretty positive.

Just talked to my dad who lives about 50 miles away, they heard it loud and clear when the plant went up
