View Full Version : Filtering out sub-forums

Is there a way to filter out posts from sub-forums? Or, you know, ignore a sub-forum entirely?

Or even just to exclude a sub-forum from the "New Posts" query...

I'm not aware of a way to do that. I would certainly use the feature if it was available.

Hmm... ok.

For those wanting to do it the long way:

Start an [url=http://pistol-forum.com/search.php?search_type=1]advanced search
Search type: Posts
Search in forum(s): CTRL+A to select all, CTRL+CLICK the forum you want to exclude
[X] Also search in child forums
Find posts: -Your Last Visit- -and Newer-
Show results as: Threads

This isn't perfect. And it's long. And it doesn't generate a bookmarkable URL (since each new instance of a query is assigned a unique ID).

But it works. And even this level of effort is less than the pain from seeing certain sub-forums

If I get a some spare time, which is unlikely, I'll try to whip something up. It'll probably use Grease Monkey.

I could use a way to skip new posts from "ask mall ninja" or whateverthehell that forum is called.

I don't intend to dog pile but I agree as well. I love humor and some of the stuff is really funny but I think the mixing of the two info streams is confusing my info feed a bit.

Me three or whatever. Like a good laugh and all, but...

Thank God it's not just me. :p

I love that stuff... And once I figured out where it was coming from I was able to laugh my ass off. But, since I usually read P-F.com via Tapatalk's New Posts, I thought everybody who wrote those letters to SD247 were going bonkers.

Yeah, me too - I went through a few "WTF are people trolling the forums??" moments before I made it to a computer and saw what was going on.

I love the sub forum. I think it's hilarious. I just want to parse out the lolz.

Tom has set it up so all of the Sheepdog247 threads will have a "SD247" prefix. This should make it easier to distinguish them when using the New Posts feature.

Unfortunately, it appears Tapatalk does not display the prefixes in thread titles. That's a Tapatalk issue and not one we can resolve internally.

Sure enough. I can confirm that option exists in the Android version of Tapatalk.

Thanks, Tom!

When I hit the "new posts" button and sheepdog stuff overwhelms everything else, PF runs the risk of becoming like those high bandwidth "jokes" that people forward me, clogging up my in box.

Here's how you can get a "What's New?" page that excludes some sections. If you want a filtered view, bookmark the modified link, rather than using the "What's New?" link we provide.

If you load the main PF page, you'll see the links to each section. In the URL is a number which represents the section. For example, the Romper Room is 12, and SheepDog is 56:

http://pistol-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?12-Romper-Room

http://pistol-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?56-Ask-Sheepdog247

You can exclude 12 and 56 in a search for new posts by using this url:

http://pistol-forum.com/search.php?do=getnew&exclude=12,56&contenttype=vBForum_Post

Thank you very much for the info, JV.

Should come in handy at some other boards I attend as well!

Tom - Thanks for your troubleshooting/testing help.

FWIW: You can use an include (only) rather than an exclude:

For just the Autoloaders section:

http://pistol-forum.com/search.php?do=getnew&include=15&contenttype=vBForum_Post
