In a match, what are the consequences of missing your target?

It depends. Sometimes it might only mean an extra split on the target if you called the miss as it was happening and the rules allow make-up shots. It might also be the difference between winning and coming in some position that is not 1st place. If you are shooting with friends, it will also probably mean some friendly ridicule.

Assuming for the moment that you don't make the miss up, it will usually result in some sort of scoring penalty which is fairly severe. In USPSA a miss gives you -10 as well as scoring no points for the shot.

In a match, what are the consequences of missing your target?

It depends on a huge number of factors.

What sport?
What target?
Was a makeup shot made (if allowed)?
Was another target inadvertently hit by the stray round?

edited to add: in some games it will also depend on whether there were any other hits on the target. For example, in IDPA a miss is five points (2.5s penalty). But if you don't score enough points on a target, e.g. if you fail to engage it at all or miss all your shots at it, there is an additional penalty.

We stole the idea for KSTG, where regardless of how many hits you score on a target you get a Failure to Neutralize 5s penalty unless you hit an a-zone at least once.

The Rangemaster Tac Con course has a lot of no-shoots placed so that it is easy to hit them if your marksmanship is off, coupled with massive penalties for doing so - like, a 200 second penalty. Enough to immediately take you out of the running. This is one reason I really enjoyed these matches.
