The major issue -

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/oo345/blriehl/1911s/IMG-20130315-03610_zpsce43c85d.jpg

No breakages yet. No FTF either. 1 failure to fire though, not sure of the cause. Nice dent in the primer, so I'll take credit for a bad reload.

Holster: Loose as a goose now. Almost no tension now, sloppy as can be. Need a new one.

Thoughts on carrying it - with this holster, the butt sticks out. That is the only printing I get. The pistol isn't nearly as muzzle heavy as a 1911, so it rides much different. Is more comfy sitting too. Distinctly lighter than a full 45 too. Sights suck...pure suck. Trigger is getting better still. Hammer/sear will be changed out shortly. FPS too. Mag well needs blending badly. I can't shoot it more than 300 rounds w/o bleeding. 9mm is rather unsatisfying to shoot. Strike that, very unsatisfying to shoot. The stock grips leave a lot to be desired. The biggest, without a doubt, flaw in the gun is the lack of a beavertail. I'm not talking a whale tail so often seen. Just a little extension is all that is needed. My 40 P35 shoots drastically different with the Warner hammer/sear/FPS installed - same parts were ordered for this one. The finish is holding up very well. Wilson Ultima Grease was used exclusively, and my calipers say less 0.002 or less wear on the rails on the wear points.

Thoughts on shooting it - there is a reason it was never really popular with the comp crowd....hammer bite. And the trigger sucks. Sights suck pretty bad too. I'm almost ready to call it a day on this gun and just get the work done it needs. Which is: front strap treatment (40lpi checkering is what I'm thinking), back strap treatment (same), good ignition parts (Warner), good sights (Heinies for this), better thumb safety (C&S), new bbl (KKM), and a good dehorning.

Final thoughts - I really like these guns. They are 90% finished though. A good P35 is a $1500 prospect. Like a 1911 IMO. I am luke warm on the 9mm still. Don't bother telling me all the data/opinions/whatever on caliber. I still am just luke warm on it. I like the 45, 10, and Super/9x23. Those make me happy. I need a better holster for her.

What is the holster?

And what do you think the lowest you could get would be if you went cheap-but-servicable on some of the upgrades (as in grip tape instead of checkering)?

I'm bringing an Israeli trade in up to spec with MARS. I disagree with bill about the beaver tail, but my hands are not too meaty. The work is: install C&S thumb safety, install 1911 nat match rear sight and serrated tritium front, secure and fit VZ grips, round the hammer for appendix carry, Cerakote. The total with the gun will be about 70% of Bill's idea.

9mm doesn't need checkering -- harden the fudge up.

Not always a disadvantage. MARS also does lovely stippling -- I can post pics of my LWC.

Every time I see a P35, I think the slide release is something off an AK.

Who said anything about "need?"

Want. Desire. Lust. Crave.

I wasn't a beavertail P35 guy until this little venture.

Yeah, from a critical perspective, that slide stop isn't making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside....

Slide stop thinking circa 1935......... If it isn't long enough to reach with your right thumb, how on earth would you activate it??

I am quite certain this was an "improvement" over the 1911. Well, ok, not certain, but it sounds logical.

I'm utterly amazed how abrasive kydex is on a finish. And for what it's worth, the finish on these guns is thick and hard.

The most breakable part on the P35, the lower barrel lugs. The war time guns had soft barrels, including the locking lugs which are prone to round if hot ammo is shot through them. The MkIII suffers none of these issues in my experience.

The only part that skin has worn finish off. The front strap looks new, as does the back strap.

FWIW, nose dive is less of an issue with a P35 than it is with a 1911.

Everything not coated with the particularly robust, though very ugly, epoxy is worn white. I believe it was simple black oxide.

The last few months saw the use of a Raven IWB holster. Prior to that it was a horse hide Kirkpatric SIS.

Cleaned about every 1k. Lubricant used is Wilson Ultima Grease, added every few hundred rounds (at the start of each range trip). Gun is obviously run very wet.

No measurable wear on frame/slide rails.

No rounding of locking lugs.

No FTF/FTE since last report. All ammo is 125gr Precision Moly TC bullets over a warm charge of Bullseye.

The only part that skin has worn finish off. The front strap looks new, as does the back strap.

Noticed that before on the tangs of HPs and GMs and wondered about it. I'd thought that maybe polishing from shirt fabric might be helping, but you'd think that would be accompanied by wear on the heel of the backstrap/MSH, as well.

Love this thread, Bill. Thanks. The P35 has been my favorite pistol since I was a kid waaaay back when.

I am just a couple rounds shy of 9,000 total through my current Hi-Power. Should pass that milestone tomorrow morning.

I have other pistols that weigh less, cost less, hold more and are shot more, but after all this time the Hi-Power is still what I'm most comfortable with.

I just wish the HP had a tiny bit more beavertail. And a better trigger.

Which 1911 NM sight do you use? I have a Mk III that could use some new sights.

The Dave berryhill MEU(SOC) retro. I have the same set of sights on my primary commander and the HP. I am using 'modern' sights -- ameriglo hacks -- on my G17 and am beginning to think that modern is not necessarily better.

Nice pics. Nice gun. The Hi-Power is probably one of the sexiest guns ever produced. I have a Practical 9mm that gets taken out every once in a while. No doubt again soon after this thread. Sending it off to a smith for some TLC is twords the top of my bucket list.
