View Full Version : Looking For A Good Balcony Load

NETim

Since there are now some top level trainers out there advocating the ol' "Touch Two Off the Balcony" as an effective means of self-defense, I thought I'd get ahead of the curve and start loading my own "Balcony Loads."

Taking into account the intelligence behind this new trend, it seems only fitting to build a load with a lots of noise but little payload.

What's a good recipe?

I like to put a 12 gauge flare in the left barrel and whatever birdshot Dick's has in stock (never buy shells from walmart! This will get you killed!) in the right.

I discharge both barrels simultaneously, which is why I prefer older side-by-side models with two triggers. After exiting the weapon, both rounds combine about 11.5 feet downrange (the size of the average balcony) to form an effective "shock and awe" type munition. Very capable weapon system.

Not as potent as gluing large pistol primers (preferably Federal) in the nose of a 357 SIG hydrashock, but civilians shouldn't be messing around with that anyway.

How about some crushed bits of cell phone in one load and a handful of cork peas (http://www.americanwhistle.com/how.html) in the other barrel?
I call it the "call box and whistle" combo. Perfect for the ladies.

Perfect for the ladies.

Good to consider the needs of this very feeble and needy market segment.

I hear Lee will soon make a special vomit die with optional feces attachment, for use with their popular shotshell turret loaders.

I have some black powder loads left over from my Cowboy shooting days. I could use them. That way if I miss, at least they won't be able to see me.

I don't have a balcony. Do I use the same load shooting from my porch, or do I need to build a balcony?

My interpretation was that no balcony no shotgun. That's why I'm sticking to the AR and Glock.

I read that a load of nickels in a 12 gauge was best for this.

Seriously. Read this on an internet forum, and when I asked how they knew if the load was safe the response was "Sure! I have tried it dozens of times!"

The thread was just below the the "What length barrel for my Taurus Judge?" thread.

If you don't have a balcony, how in the name of the Hartford Gun Club can you expect to afford a Perazzi to discharge over the heads of the rogues and jackanapes in the first place?

Barbarous weapons like those are best left to the hired help. You know, those people; the ones who didn't go to the right schools and therefore wound up in the military or police.

I was talking to the old-timer who worked behind the reloading counter at my LGS. I don't recall the conversation, but it resulted in him showing me his spare magazine. Sure enough, it had primers glued into the cavity of his .45 JHPs.

Haha, as a Yankee I've been to HGC a couple times...

As far as I can tell, I don't think it even matters what loads you shoot off your balcony. You're only supposed to scare him off! Why would you ever want to use a gun to SHOOT somebody??? Are you a lunatic or something?

As my kid says "I know, right?"

At close range when the rocket is still burning it will set a car on fire.

The go-boom version left a hole in the side of a junk car door the size of a tennis ball.

I had a friend in HS that shot his brother with a shotshell loaded with Q-tip ends. (It was the wad that made the bruise.). That might work well with black powder, to make a flaming Q-tip load.

Pretty much. Combine teenage guys, several 12 gauge shotguns, places close by with easy access to shoot, and a reloader with plenty of supplies, and you get research in the ballistic sciences.

My bud has gone on to be an actual no-shit rocket scientist.

"Poor man's Roufuss round, uhbviously."

what the hell is that

Raufoss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raufoss_Mk_211).

There used to be (maybe still is, I don't know) one of those companies that made the "special"* shotgun shells, like the ones full of carpet tacks or "Dragon's Breath", that sold a pouch of 12ga shells with hollow slugs and some 209 primers you were supposed to epoxy into the nose after filling them with whatever homebrew 'splosive you wanted. Sort of a "do-it-yourself DD NFA violation in a bag". Not looking good in stripes, I never worked up the nerve to try them.

(They also sold flechette shells, apparently unaware that the .mil had abandoned its flechette shotgun shell research back in the day because the violence of firing tended to bend the little buggers like boomerangs, doing nothing good for their ballistic properties...)

*By "special", I mean short bus special, not specops special.
