How about a rule where you must list the make and model :D

Specifically, the one in the first HK45 shot...Looks like similar hands to the bell&ross line, just hopefully without the $4000 price tag...

Very nice collection you have there.

Back in my younger days. My first auto, Seiko 7S26-0029 bad ass watch and still running strong. Kershaw Talon is the knife.

I've always been impressed with your photos over the years. What camera platform and lens system do you use? Your macros are tack sharp.

ToddG

Thanks, Cowtown!

I've got a now-outdated Canon 1D MkII N. For macro, I use a Canon 100mm 2.8 (non-L). But a number of those pics were taken with either a standard 50mm 1.4 or a 24-105 4L IS USM.

Got it from Panatime (http://www.panatime.com/index.html). Just checked quick and didn't see the exact same strap, but I imagine they still sell it. The buckle was bought separately (also from Panatime), it's just a simple PVD'd steel buckle.

Got this one recently. For the price point, it's not bad.

Seiko 5 NEO Monster (aka "The Baby Monster"). Thus far, I've been pleased with it. Very comfortable to wear, doesn't pull arm hairs despite having a bracelet (I've had a few other brands that would pull arm hair....kinda painful :o). The Lume is pretty good on it too. I went looking for a regular Monster, and I stumbled onto this one.

http://www.pbase.com/sabu71/image/132784401/large.jpg

I also dig Citizens Eco Drive as well (got a thinner one with the rubber strap on it with titanium case...can't remember what model), and I've got a tough solar from Casio that I wear a good bit too (I doubt I'll ever wear a battery powered watch again....I'm not handy enough to change the batteries :o). I do want to get a Sinn U1 at some point (love the looks, and from what I've heard, they're pretty tough watches)

My current wristwatch is your everyday Casio G-Shock Classic DW5600. Haven't had it for too long, but its awesome. Have a small snap on compass on the band that has taken its fair share of beatings and held up nicely. Can't do much better for about $35 combined:)

I am not up to speed on those fine timepieces but I too had a fling with quality. Rolex GMT Master at the PX for $350 back then (1975) and I bought a Rolex Submariner as well when a fellow soldier was heading home and needed money.

Both were stolen some time ago and I have a small collection of Timex's stashed around the house for when I forget to put one of them on.

Currently only a Retro style Gshock in all black and a Sinn 656. The 656 is currently on OEM leather but when I get bored I switch it back to the bracelet.

Yea I was honestly surprised at the price, I had read several reviews on the watch and talked to several people who have much more expensive watches but still wear their Monster, it really appears to be a cult watch haha, I may send it to Yokobie or Motorcity watch works in the future to get some work done to it, such as bead blasting or replacing the face with a sapphire crystal.

Saaaaay what? Just started researching them... It's case is made of German submarine steel and is oil filled, cool stuff. Only bad part is they state it has to go back to Deutschland for any type of maintenance.

The movement is pretty wild as well.

Wow, the hands on that UX are white as can be. After years in the oil, they tend to dim/yellow a little bit. It's never bothered me and I wouldn't even notice it except in contrast to the video you posted.

Mine does have a little bounce. You only see it if you're looking for it. It happens from 6-12 on the dial normally, or from 12-6 if the watch is upside down.

You'd have to get pretty unlucky to need maintenance beyond battery changes in the UX, but yes it will need to go back to the Fatherland every 5 or so years for that. Just an excuse to buy a second nice watch IMHO.

Regarding maintenance on automatics- do you guys follow the schedule or just wait for signs that it needs it? Can going over the recommended period cause any damage or will performance just degrade?
My seamaster is coming up on 5 years so I'm wondering if I should start saving for it. Omega maintenance is what, like $2-300?

I'd sell that and buy a G-Shock.

My last two watches were G-Shocks, midrange price for the brand, about $120 or so. Both very functional, durable and both suffered abrupt spontaneous failure that was too expensive to repair. I'll never buy a G-Shock again.

Nice ride, dude. Why is it that we-- and here I specifically include myself -- feel compelled to put our passport next to our pistols in photos? It has absolutely never happened that I have unloaded my daily carry stuff and laid out my passport and my pistol at the same time. It's pretty much either one or the other. Looks cool, though. Note: no pistol, not even a PPK, looks as right next to a passport as a GP35.

So, I guess its no coincidence that the "sexy and I know it" video was pretty much a g-shock commercial.

Yesterday I banged up my wrist and the ace bandage was too thick for a g-shock's band. Tried wearing it other places but out of habit kept trying to get the time from the elastic wrap. Not having a watch where you are used to having it just sucks.

Todd dinged me last year... once for being a "heathen bastard" for not wearing it the first day of AFHF, and then again on the second day not having a "proper" watch like my brother's Breitling.

I've worn it ever since... and as you can tell from the pictures it needs a deep clean / polish and service. I may pick up one of those Suunto Core's while its away... lest I be called out again in April.

So, I just got back from a cruise, where I didn't carry my phone, which I normally use to check the time. I realized it's probably high time I grow up and get a decent watch (I'm 29). The last watch I bought was one of the first Indiglo Timex Ironman Triathlons when I was about 10. I'd like to get something a bit nicer this time, but not Rolex nice. Any recommendations on resources for learning about watches? What's the watch equivalent of 'Buy a 9mm Glock, M&P, or HK'? I want one watch that I can wear on almost any occasion, from suit and tie, to the beach. Budget is up to about $500. Any suggestions?

Nice call. Definitely a good watch-guy watch.

Funny thing is, I think my Omega somehow overheard that conversation and was offended, because it promptly sprung a leak the next time I took a swim. I was particularly annoyed since it had been on 30 dives with me without a single problem, but decided to die at the neighborhood pool.

Unfortunately, it spent the better part of the next year going back and forth to Omega for repair (including an extended trip to Switzerland). To Omega's credit, the watch they (finally) returned to me was practically new and works perfectly, but I got tired of wearing a digital watch during its prolonged absence and decided to buy a dive watch with a reputation for ruggedness as a 'back-up'.

Once I discovered Sinn and its German engineering there was no turning back, and I now find I wear the 'back-up' more often than its predecessor.

Unfortunately, watches are addictive. A Sinn 856 is on my short list.

Read somewhere that Sinn's gmt design is not as user friendly as on Omega or Rolex. Any truth to that, or just user preference? Second time zone is an absolute must for me.

Depends.

Most Sinn UTC watches use an extra 24h hour hand that you set in one hour jumps from the main time. So if you want to know what time it is in the second time zone, you need to think in military time.

The 757 uses a second 12h hour hand, and so it's just a matter of reading the yellow skeletonized hand instead of the solid white one.

The typical Omega/Rolex GMT mechanism actually allows you to jump the main (normal) hour hand in one hour increments, so you always just read time as always. Many people prefer this if they themselves are changing time zone often. The other system is often preferred by people who need to keep track of a distant time zone.

The unusual way the 757 does it provides the benefits of both so long as you can keep track of AM/PM in your head.

My Kobold Polar Surveyor Tactical has the genetic 24h jump hand and an additional complication, a 24h subdial that tracks day/night for when you may be somewhere like the poles where you cannot rely on the sun's presence to determine whether it's AM or PM.

I've never owned either watch. IIRC, the 857 has some cool technology to it like the tegmented steel case and the copper sulfate capsule iniside. The biggest advantage I believe that the Omega has is an added complication that allows the twelve hour hand to be independently adjustable forward and backward. This makes adjusting time between time zones easier when traveling. The newer Omegas also have the Co-Axial movement which some folks think is pretty nice. The Sinn has the ETA 2893 which allows forward adjustment of the 24 hour hand independent of the other hands. This is pretty much the norm with any Swiss GMT watch other than Rolex and Omega.

I think the decision really boils down to what you need out of the watch. If you switch between time zones frequently the added cost of the Omega might be worth while. If not, Sinn is a sweet piece. For the money, I much rather have the less common, tougher case and more legible face of the Sinn.

FWIW, there are some Sinn's I would take ahead of the Seamaster, but not that one.
In this case I think it comes down to personal taste. Both good watches. I own the Seamaster. YMMV.

I'll assume for sake of discussion that you like the looks of both.

The Omega SM GMT is a "Bond" watch, which you may or may not like. FWIW, that was what kept me from getting one as soon as the co-axial version came out.

The Omega is smaller (41mm vs 43mm), and while it sounds like a tiny difference it's quite noticeable on the wrist. Larger watches have been in style for years now, and it's unlikely that will change anytime soon. I have a normal SMP (blue non-Bond) and it seems genuinely small these days.

The Omega will be easier for keeping time if you travel a lot. Both will work fine if you're normally in one time zone and just want to track another.

The Omega's co-axial movement really is a superior technology in my experience. My Omega PO, which was one of the first run of their co-axials, keeps incredible time. Ditto a friend's 300 GMT. In fairness, when those two watches were built Omega was "burning in" the movements before shipping to make sure they were working well. They don't do that anymore, but still you generally hear very positive things about the co-axials (though some of the chrono co-axials had issues early on). The Omega will be COSC-certified, as well, while the Sinn will not.

The Omega is going to be more noticed by folks, especially non-WIS (http://watchlords.forumotion.net/t586-you-might-be-a-wis-watch-idiot-savant). This can be a positive or a negative depending on you and your environment. My wife has two watches, a Rolex and a substantially more expensive Zenith. When she wears the Rolex, strangers on the DC Metro train comment to her about it. When she wears the Zenith, maybe one person in ten thousand recognizes it for what it is... and he's definitely not going to be a mugger.

The Omega may hold its resale value a little better, but at the same time you'll find a more ready market of Sinn guys who'll snatch up a decently priced used 857 than someone looking for a 300 GMT.

Omega has a spotty reputation for customer service and repair in the U.S. The distributor for Sinn, WatchBuys (the only place to buy a new Sinn in the U.S.), is historically very nice to potential customers and not particularly helpful to existing customers. Sinn's repair facility here in the U.S., RGM Watches, has a pretty good reputation but my one experience with them was extremely bad.

I really wish Omega would go back to making non-Bond SMPs. I'd be very tempted to pick up a co-axial GMT that had the same dial and hands as my SMP:

Sinn 757 UTC

One of the many things that I picked up in my class with Todd this past weekend (AFHF), was a lusting for a Sinn. Two days of staring at that thing while I was listening to him crack on and on about my weapon choice, ;) - I came home and one of the first things I did was hit the interwebs looking for more detailed Sinn watch info to try and decide exactly which model I want. Or should I say, want first. I think a 556 & a 757 or 857 would be a nice start combo.

Oh damn this watch habit is going to be expensive...

Todd, yet again, thanks for the info.

Next question to you and all: where do you guys draw the line as far as case thickness for a business / dress type watch? I doubt I have owned anything thicker than half inch. Looking at the watches of an interest, I see 14mm, 16mm, 18 mm, even 2+ cm. I can't imagine wearing something like a Pam 0320 with any kind of dress shirt; of course, I can suspect that p-f.com crowd doesn't do dress shirts too often...

One of my must own someday watches. Beautiful and technologically fascinating, the GS GMT uses their proprietary Spring Drive movement that gives quartz accuracy with mechanical "feel." The second hand sweeps rather than ticks.

They're pricey, you cannot get warranty service in the U.S. (last I knew, anyway), and they're a bit shiny. But overall just an incredible watch. I'd take one over a Rolex GMT in a heartbeat.

edit to add: You might also want to look at the SDBD001, the Seiko 600m Spring Drive dive watch:

Nice,
Classic looking watch. I don't think you'll be disappointed with a seiko automatic. I bought an SKX173 a couple years ago for a steal and it's been rock solid. The 7s26 movement isn't as smooth or refined as the more expensive ETA movements found in most of the higher end watches, and you'll get the Hardlex crystal instead of sapphire. But the damn things can handle some abuse and generally keep great time. Mine gains about 15 seconds a week with constant wear. Get it.

Nice,
Classic looking watch. Get it.

I got it despite emails from Todd saying things like "if you can't afford an Kobold, kill yourself. Seriously." and "fine buy a cheap watch, plebian!"

I like it.

Its a Rolex 5513 Type 1 maxi dial. Its far from a fake. Its a rare one year model (1977) otherwise only used for the Brit Special Forces Milsubs and COMEX subs. Any more great watch insights genius;)

One day, after I pay for college tuition, I'll probably take the plunge for something nice, like a Doxa or Bremont. But for now, months worth of car payments take priority. And only us nerdy WIS types know what the hell a Polar Surveyor is anyway

I bought a mid-range boutique diver a couple years ago (Halios Bluering), and I loved it, but ended up selling it. I replaced it with the seiko and used the leftover $$$ for wife's first mother's day gifts, and havent regretted it.

Nice watch, despite what Todd says.

I'd never seen one with the wrist strap holes exposed on the lugs and the ones I have seen like that been cheap, Hong Kong knockoffs. I'll reserve my comments pertaining to your genius quip.

In collaboration with COMEX, Rolex developed a helium gas release valve. This would allow the built up helium gases to escape. The first watch Rolex developed for COMEX was a Submariner Ref. 5513 outfitted with a helium gas release valve. In 1972, Rolex built the Ref. 5514 exclusively for COMEX.

In 1977, a new Submariner was developed for COMEX with a 600 m. water resistance rating. This became known as the Rolex Sea Dweller. Until 1997, Comex divers were equipped with an assortment of Rolex watches, the Sea Dwellers were used on "saturation" dives while the Submariners both date and non date were issued for use in "atmospheric" dives.

Most Rolex subs had the lug holes exposed up until the early 90's. The fake manufacturers never really updated the case design until recently
so the newer copied features on the fakes come on the same older style case fake.

You might have avoided that comment by some situational awareness..............regardless I apologize it was pre coffee.

Its tradition really. The well known Special Operations Teams that handed out Rolex watches back in the day as an issued item issued only 'no date' versions.
Rolex experts tend to place a higher status whether with merit or not on the original design 'no date'.........and James Bonds  was a no date (taking after the Brit Special Op lead and not the reverse).

Eighteen months from order to delivery. There were several delays due to the DLC and I'm not too sure if Bill is still offering the DLC 'cause so much of the process was out of his control. Bill was kind enough though to send a stainless version to take up space on my wrist while this one was built.

Say you don't want to spend more than $300, but want something nice.

That's like saying "I want a nice car for $3,000."

What kind of watch are you looking for: quartz, or mechanical; digital or analog?
What features other than "tell me what time it is" do you want, if any?
Is it going to be your only watch or do you have others for specific needs (physical activity, suit and tie, etc.)?

Also: if your Ironman worked well for you, why not just get another?

I very may well just get the battery replaced for the super cheap. just curious at whats out there. I do appreciate the finer things in life, to an extent.

What kind of watch are you looking for: quartz, or mechanical; digital or analog?

I am assuming quartz, as mechanical sounds like it would be way more than I want to spend? also, I want it to be as maintenance-free as possible. analog or digital, no strong preference actually. I reckon I just need to see options.

What features other than "tell me what time it is" do you want, if any?

none.

Is it going to be your only watch or do you have others for specific needs (physical activity, suit and tie, etc.)?

only watch. But I will generally wear anything with...anything. I mean I wore the timex pretty much all the time. Definitely not looking for a flashy, shiny watch.

Define "light" and explain what experience you have with heavier watches that make you feel this way.

I just broke out the scale.

my dead timex is 1.5 ounces, or 43 grams. keep in mind I have little to compare to. it seems very light and I love that about it.

I also have a swiss army (by victorinox) watch. interestingly, its battery also died around a month ago. It was a gift. edit: here it is - http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Excursion-24490/dp/B000GGV9SK/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

It is a sharp looking piece, very clean and simple, and I dig that. but, it is 2.86 ounces or 81 grams. so nearly twice as heavy. I find it miserable. constantly falling down my wrist.

I do like the size of the face. apparently the Round Case Diameter is 39 mm. it is perhaps a bit too thick, I think I'd like something thinner.

I really think I just need to see a bunch of options in that price range. if nothing really gets me excited, I imagine I'll just use something similar to what I've been using and not feel bad about it.

If you don't want to spend more than $300 and aren't going to replace the battery in your current watch, I personally enjoy Suunto. I've had a couple vectors and one core over the years, they are lightweight and durable. All my Suuntos have been very reliable, except for the core's altimeter which gets 'stuck' in free fall every 20 jumps or so (I'm a skydiving instructor). I assume this is from the core having a more precise altitude reading (3ft increments instead of the vectors 10, and free fall is fast!). I don't particularly baby my gear and my Suuntos have now seen around 4000 jumps since I switched from analog to digital altimeters. And they make a fine time keeper ;)

Definitely worth the money. I use one everyday.

I can't even pretend, though, that I'd ever use any of those features.

also, (since I only use a watch for time) one thing that occasionally annoyed me about my timex was the mode button accidentally getting pressed, and then me looking down at my watch to see the time with both my hands occupied and seeing the stopwatch mode (00:00:00). makes me think I'd be better off with an analog display.

anyone else ever have these problems with a digital watch with multiple features/displays? the timex is obviously about as cheap as one can get, and it barely takes any pressure at all the activate this button in question.

and, many of these Cores have weights approaching that of my Victorinox, which turns me off.

having said that, perhaps the problem of my Victorinox slipping down my wrist is caused by the crap band that it came with. I think I'll get its battery replaced and find a simple cloth strap for it, and see if the weight still bothers me.

A really nice feature of the Core, which is REALLY nice for me, is the 'lock' feature. It locks the screen you want (time, alt, baro, compass). A few times I've caught my Suuntos on the wrong mode in free fall, and seconds count lol.

Happy Birthday to me. :) (Drat, a fingerprint and a hair, oh well.)

It's a modded Seiko by yobokies (http://s161.photobucket.com/albums/t208/yobokies/Mods/?start=all).

Here are the specs as I ordered it: 20mm lug size (SNKH63) version with 4.5hr date dial + black date dial + PGL hands (lance second hand) + black nato strap + AR sapphire crystal + bracelet (not shown)

Well done! That's a great looking watch. You made some great choices with how you had that built. I really like those hands, very similar to the hands on a Yobokies build I received last week that I've been wearing a lot....

Jason, that's a nice build too. I like dive watches a lot, I use the bezel all day long. My next build will be a 007 or monster with a plain 12-3-6-9 face. Maybe a night monster - those are nice.

Yep, me too! I am certainly getting partial to dive watches for the bezel. Very useful indeed. I've actually got 007 mod inbound right now from a Canuck, so hopefully I'll have it in hand next week.

Geez this watch addiction is a tough one to beat... I'm at 4 and counting now. Ugh. :p

Couldn't stand it.
Had to buy me a nice casual dress watch to wear with jeans and a Polo.
My current Traser military watch is just too big and too tacticool black nylon Zulu to wear during a nice night out with the wife.
Retro military, that's the ticket.
Laco Aviator inbound.

That's nice, I like the clean and simple look.

Have you tried replacing the battery? Mine got really tough to read- especially when the backlight was on (or really wasn't on at all).... a fresh battery a few months ago and it was back in business.

I cannot speak to the all-black, but the orange negative displays can be very hard to read indoors or in low light. You might want to try changing the contrast (http://forums.watchuseek.com/f374/official-suunto-help-desk-instructions-contrast-adjustment-core-displays-88501.html).

Thanks.

As a lifetime member of the $15 throwaway watch club, you jerks (meh and LL specifically) finally forced me to give in and buy a Seiko snzg15j1. I'll post a pic when it comes home.

I guess it's time to stop being a heathen, reputable online retailers would be? Amazon has been little help with their everything is great comments/reviews.

My elcheapo Invicta watch I have worn for work has left one heck of a tan line and looks like I was just mugged if I don't wear it...so it's time to join the nice watch club.

Thanks for that link Todd, I hadn't had any problems with reading the face, but I decided to knock the contrast up a couple of notches just to see if I like the difference.

......

I'd be very interested in your observations and opinions after wearing it for a while. I have been interested in something along those lines, and have always had a fondness for Seikos. My older eyes like the larger numbers.

The Seiko 200-meter dive watch I bought in the Camp Pendleton PX more than 30 years ago is still going strong. I think I have changed the battery 5 or 6 times, and run a Zulu strap on it now. It's a classic beast.

I'm hoping Suunto will come out with a slim watch the way Casio did with their pathfinder (eg paw-2000). I love the look, but I just can't pull it off on my tiny wrist.

Not quite sure what I have here. It's a Seiko, picked it up for ~$70 on ebay. Not sure if I got a deal or not.
Only thing I'd like to do is to get some more visible/glow hands on it. Any ideas, tips or direction for that?

Sorry about the crap phone pic, but it's the best I have for the moment.

Thought it was pretty reasonable for a Swiss automatic.

Got a new strap in the mail yesterday for one of my new (to me) Seiko mods. Brady sailcloth in black with white stitching. Definitely like it better than the rubber strap it came with.

After years of not wearing a watch, I got this same watch a few weeks ago. Everything I need, nothing I don't. I'd like to spec out a custom build with mostly the same features as this watch, a few upgrades and some stylistic changes...

The bezel and case still look great, but the deployment looks pretty terrible, which is why it's now on an all black Zulu strap.
