I was asked to start a thread about a custom 2011 build that I had done for me, and now that I just got my first finished picture, I'll get it started:

http://oi49.tinypic.com/14cxxzl.jpg

This is the end product. Over a year from starting the project to getting it, and full, full, full of hundreds of emails later, about every last little detail.

Going back to the beginning, this started by me looking for recommendations on the Brian Enos forum.

It eventually came down to SVI or Matt Cheely, and I went with the latter.

I had been debating between 2011 and an M&P9 (or P30, for that matter)... but I just couldn't get any real passion from the latter two. The P30, especially felt completely perfect in hand, but... no charisma. No 'take me out and shoot me.' No 'get interested in me.' If I went back to just a normal gun, I knew I'd lose my interest in the field.

So, a lot of money and months later, I got to being a box of parts:

http://i48.tinypic.com/2hxa9u1.jpg

Rather more months later, the fitting started with this minibob and the squared off trigger guard:

Countersunk slide stop:

Trigger and slide to frame:

Threaded barrel:

Slide stop, safety:

Angled recoil plug:

http://i49.tinypic.com/350unmd.jpg

Done but for sights and coating:

http://i47.tinypic.com/26s79.jpg

Now, one might notice the rail there. That.... was a source of massive frustration. The slide was ordered with a ball cut, which I didn't realize until it was too late. Hundreds of drawings later, a week of rather little sleep and constant migranes later (taking this rather seriously!), ended up with this render, and the go ahead:

http://i48.tinypic.com/345n0bq.jpg

And then... it was finished.

So many details. So very many.

Basic specifications:

9mm 17+1 capacity with 126mm magazines.
4.25" slide length.
Setup to lock slide back.
Blued finish for now, putting rounds through before recoating.
Threaded and standard barrel.
Ambi and single sided safety.
Multiple trigger bows.
3x 126mm magazines, 2x 140mm.
Trijicon RMR08 adjustable 6.5 MoA.
Grip reduction to 5.25" circumference (smaller around than a thin gripped 1911).
Tritium front sight, custom U notch blank rear, co-witness.
Custom RMR mount.
Custom flat wire recoil spring setup.
Just above 3.5 lb trigger (to pass class testing, minimum weight).
~42 oz with RMR and 18 rounds of 147gr 9mm.

My new EDC.

Very nice!

Custom 2011s are very nice, and good choice on the commander slide for the 9mm.

You considering a 9x23 barrel for it?

Haven't gotten it yet. Hopefully next week.

Even if it is all non-ancient, huh?

Yeah, thought of going to 5", but for IWB, I just can't sit down with that much barrel.

Not considering 9x23, no. This is just meant for defense against people.

This. Magazines shouldn't have spacers. It makes the baby John Moses Browning cry. ;)

Unless the baby John Moses wants to supply my ammo... tough noogies.

Pffft. 9x23/38S is made for 2 legged critters!

Oh, the reactions to the entire project, for a carry gun, might be more akin to drawing a moustache on a painting. From some old fashioned puritans, at least.

It's meant for /competing against/ other two legged critters, perhaps. If I listened to you, I'd end up with .40 super or some silly round.

Nice build.

Since I started training hard with a P30, my 2011 has been sitting in the safe.

Wouldn't a ".40 Super" be a 10mm?

There was a "winkie" smiley in there. It was a joke. I don't actually care about the chambering of your CCW. :)

10mm is more of a .40 Magnum. The .40 Super is based on a .45 Magnum necked down to .40.

Oh, I know. :) I was agreeing about the whole tradition thing. I know you're a recovering chambering hipster. ;)

I like it!

I would definitely want one, but it gets kind of expensive when you buy stuff in pairs.

I might get another eventually, but... I like to say I'm saving a lot of money by staying with cheap calibers and not collecting firearms.

And Bill didn't get what I meant by chambering hipster, so I made a helpful meme to describe:

No, but if I were driving around on modern wheels (carrying a semi auto, perhaps) and had a bunch of wagon wheels at home (revolvers, bolt actions, shotguns... for instance) it would be a bit different. ;)

Agreed. Sure looks like a Tundra.

That pistol is bad assed.

Yep. I was waaaaay out in left field on that. I was visualizing the KAC/NHC 1911-AR set, which had those dimples everywhere. That brought me to the NHC AAC 1911.

Oh well....

Good god that is sexy. Great design and great work.

It goes without saying the suppressor is part of the EDC platform?

+1 for a range report

Did I mention thats a beautiful, beautiful HG. All your hard work and stress shows in the sophistication and quality of the finished product. Superb job.

Open carry. If I need to do concealed, probably in a purse, unless I get more empire waist tops.

But open carry is much nicer. Allows whatever size I want.

It's no bigger than a Glock 17, really, though.

Thanks! You're the one that inspired me on this, just to let you know!

Took it out to the range. Kept dragging my thumb on the slide. Safety is thinner than I like. Going to have to get that figured out. Gun feels amazing. Like I'm holding a brick of metal that happens to move in parts.

Why a 5"?

And I'll have to retract an earlier statement. Because of how the magazine is made, the 17 round is a bit longer than a G17 or M&P9. I would guess that the 15 round is about the same length (about 6mm shorter).

Of course, that's just a grip change away. Or even the subcompact grip. I'm figuring out I can pretty much hide this where ever if I wanted to, if I swap out for:

http://www.stiguns.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/VIP_1a.jpg

Or even smaller:

http://www.stiguns.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/TotalEclipse_1a.jpg

Sized grips. The barrel length is short enough for me to conceal IWB if wanted, especially with the flush fit barrel.

Quack doesn't know what he wants...5", 4", 6" or 4.25"...

Well, for 9mm, there's no reason to go past 4/.25. Combine that with the fact I can't sit down with an IWB 5", and my decision was pretty simple.

/Am/ looking at a 6" 10mm, though. Woods/hiking gun.

5" because I already have a threaded barrel LOL. I have most of the parts for a build except for the frame and slide. I already carry a Tac 4.15 and have carried a 5" 2011. Might still build a 6" and while I'm playing, might as well chop down a grip for the Tac down to the size of the VIP grip.

I have know idea what I want to do yet. LOL

BTW, I've carried my 6" Wilson a few times IWB.

Missed this the first time. Why'd you go P30 over 2011?
