View Full Version : Mobile 1 as a lubricant?

It was suggested Mobile 1 is a good lubrication option: comparable to miltec-1, without the expense. After a little open source internet research I haven't been convinced this isn't a viable option. I'm interested in your thoughts!

There are no gun oil refineries.
I've used Mobil-1 for several years with no problems.

Ken Hackathorn recommends it, and he knows a thing or two.

I use it. That and the red wheel bearing grease from walmart. If it's good enuff for cars I figure it'll work.

S&W Armorer instructor specifically mentioned it as a great lube. A quart will last you forever.

I'm pretty sure the crank shaft in a z06 is under a bit more stress than the barrel hood on your Glock. Mobile 1 is probably one of the best options available.

I also use "Royal Purple" full synthetic oil for gun lube. It works great from my experience as does the Mobile1 full synthetic.

$8.00 for a quart of Mobile1 or Royal Purple compared to $18 for a 4oz. bottle of MiliTec? Its a no-brainer.

Ken Elmore recommends Mobil 1 for AR-15s. He is considered an SME on the entire family of Colt AR-15 pattern weapons.

5w-40 Amsoil for European cars. I don't believe there is any evidence that one is better than the other.

Semi-Auto's
Winter time I've started using Mobil One 5w-30,
Summer time I use Mobil one Wheel Bearing grease on the slide rails.

Revolvers
Mobil One 5w-30 year round

Both available at Wally World. Since I do my own oil changes on my cars I end up with 1/2 to 1 Qt left over out of a 5 qt container. I usually save the extra until I have enough for a complete oil change; every so often I siphen off some for the important things in life, my guns.

I use Penzoil Platinum 5w30 in my car and considered it on the guns or i was thinking some of the German Castrol 0w30 if i want something a bit thicker. i dont know why i have so many different kinds of automotive oil in my house...

I use the 15-w50 that's left over after changing the oil in my motorcycle. I always have a 1/2qt in the garage.

Before I went to 3.00 a tub lithium bearing grease, it was my go to lubricant.

I use it on my pistols and rifles and so far I haven't had any issues with it getting on my clothing.

I'm liking the idea of having a lifetime's supply of good gun lube for $5 or so.

EWL.

Doesn't handle corrosive ammo salts very well and I shoot 5.45 primarily.

Motor Oil does?

I just have a preference for non toxic stuff ... that's why I gravitate to EWL for oil.

I don't know for certain but FP10/WeaponShield is 10 weight oil based and handles the salts very well; much better than the Slip2k products.

Maybe so but I honestly don't spend enough on "gun" lube to really feel as I'm losing out financially. I don't feel like I was suckered by "the man". :p

I'm not saying one is "better" than the other, just that cost is often one of the major reasons people give for using auto products.

Different strokes I guess. To each his own.

LittleLebowski

I don't spend a lot on lube either but if the oil works just as well and is locally available and I can measure it into the container of my choice....well that works better for me. Beats paying triple the cost for a tenth of the amount of the oil to be delivered via mail.

JodyH

I don't set foot in any of the local gun stores anymore so car oil is more convenient.
I have a small squeeze bottle that I refill from the remnants of my last oil change.

They have these in the camping dept. Of most outdoor stores for ~.50 cents each.

Just make sure the kind in the camping store will hold up to motor oil or you will have a mess on your hands.

I had a Brownells bottle, with Militec, it leaked around the threads.

Maybe they've improved them in the past 5 years?

For those of you using the synthetic motor oils, how many rounds do you typical go between oiling the gun?

I clean and add a few drops every couple thousand rounds.
I'm up for a afhf 2000 round, p30 Mobil-1 challenge in August.

Good question. My lube schedule is likely far more intensive than it needs to be. I wipe my duty pistols down and re-lube usually once every two weeks regardless of round count. Every time I shoot my duty pistol or Ar's for training, I clean the weapon afterwards and re-lube. I typically re-lube during the lunch break of any training classes I attend on each day of training.

I just took the m&p pistol armorer course yesterday and the instructor said the same thing, though he made sure to say that the company does not specifically endorse it.
