Things seem to be going our way, but Harry Reid seems to be faltering and this feinstien bill is scary as hell. If you haven't already written your state and federal reps do so. If you have do it again. Ruger has a good program and there are many sites that make it easy to contact all your reps. I know there is another thread this could go in but I couldn't find it and a fresh reminder is always a good thing. We need to be vocal, thanks.

I am using this site to search http://thomas.loc.gov/home/LegislativeData.php?&n=BillText&c=113

It seems odd she is having a press covference troting out all the evil metal and plastic objects but has not actually introduced the bill.

Just wrote my Senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein. My letter was quite compelling, I'm sure she will have a change of heart.

If you can singlehandedly change her mind, we'll take up a collection and buy you a shiny new assault weapon!

Instead of writing her, just put a flaming bag of dog shit on her front porch. It won't change anything, but it'll be funny as hell. At least she's 80. How much longer can she hang around?

That's the thing about weeds, one dies another pops up in its place.

Yeah, true, but this "weed" really needs to just go away. Anytime I read anything about or by her my BP goes up, I get instantly pissed off, & the anger component of my PTSD spikes through the roof. How can one wrinkly smelly old woman cause so much angst!?!

As of 1430 PST, 01/24/2013, there was no trace of this flaming ball of suck and fail (thanks for the vivid turn of phrase, Tam!) on either Govtrack (http://www.govtrack.us/) or OpenCongress (http://www.opencongress.org/).

There bare several other gun-related bills in the Senate, though; I have a list here (http://thecluemeter.blogspot.com/2013/01/gun-bills-in-us-senate.html).

Here is the text of the letter I sent my reps today. It combines the NRA-ILA language with some additional research and sources.

[[SAULTATION]]

As your constituent, I strongly urge you to oppose any legislation to ban so called "assault weapons" and "large" ammunition magazines.

A previous ban on these inanimate objects was in effect from 1994 2004 and had no discernible effect on violent crime. According to a 2004 Department of Justice report (http://www.sas.upenn.edu/jerrylee/research/aw_final2004.pdf), "...should it be renewed, the ban's effects on gun violence are likely to be small at best and perhaps too small for reliable measurement. [Assault weapons] were rarely used in gun crimes even before the ban." Regarding magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds, that same Department of Justice study concluded, "[I]t is not clear how often the outcomes of gun attacks depend on the ability of offenders to fire more than ten shots (the current magazine capacity limit) without reloading."

Furthermore, recent FBI crime data (http://www.fbi.gov/about us/cjis/ucr/crime in the u.s/2011/crime in the u.s. 2011/tables/expanded homicide data table 11) finds that of the 8,583 total homicides involving firearms—which includes scenarios of self defense—only 0.6% were committed with what has been defined as an "assault weapon". If the goal of proposed firearms legislation is to reduce gun violence, why are we only examining those which comprise the smallest slice of all crimes?

Tens of millions of Americans choose to own semi automatic firearms with ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds for the same reason as law enforcement officers: they are effective for self defense. One never knows how many rounds he or she will need for self defense or defense of others, or how many criminals may attack. Thus having a firearm that allows its lawful user to discharge multiple shots can often be the difference between life and death. In fact, a number of studies have shown that firearms are used for self defense hundreds of thousands of times to 2.5 million times annually. This amounts to guns being used 3 5 times more often for self defense than to commit a crime.

Rather than expanding previously failed legislation that won't curb violence, but will affect law abiding gun owners, I urge you to support legislation to enhance school security and improve our nation's ailing mental health system.

Please reply to me indicating your position on Sen. Feinstein's most recent proposal.

Sincerely,

My Name

S-150 has been filed, loaded to Thomas and GovTrack: The Cluemeter: Feinsteins "Assault Weapon" Bill -- UPDATE (http://thecluemeter.blogspot.com/2013/01/feinsteins-assault-weapon-bill.html)
No text at either location, but what looks like a draft version of the bill is on Senator Feinsteins website (http://www.feinstein.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/files/serve/?File_id=9a9270d5-ce4d-49fb-9b2f-69e69f517fb4).

AWB is DOA.

Don't relent though, magazine bills and universal background checks still much more likely.

I don't compromise, that's left up to the lobbyists, but it looks like NRA might be gearing up for having no choice but a universal background check bill with exemptions carved out for family members.

If that happens it happens, but until then we fight for not one inch of movement. They may say this thing is doa but Obama is going to pump a lot of money into this through his pac. Money talks in Washington because people have little moral character.

We have a president who is utterly committed to transforming America into an unrecognizable place, built on a completely different set of values, if they can be called that, than intended by our founders. He has energy, power, and the amplifying advantage of a corrupt media.

We can never rest.
