Two accused thieves have mistakenly tunnelled into a KFC while trying to break into a jewellery store in west of the Gold Coast - undeterred, they then allegedly staged an impromptu holdup and fled with thousands of dollars

Peter Walsh and Dwayne Doolan were allegedly trying to rob Wright's Jewellers in Beaudesert on New Year's Eve when they broke into a toilet block behind the store, police said.

The two men then allegedly hacked through a fibro wall using an iron bar.

When the alleged thieves finally broke through the wall they were surprised to find themselves in a KFC next door to the jewellery store.

Undeterred, the men confronted shocked staff and held up the fast-food restaurant, fleeing with $2600.

Southport Magistrates Court heard yesterday that it was the third time the pair had unsuccessfully tried to break into the jewellery store that night.

Police prosecutor sergeant Damian Summerfield said the men first tried to break the store's front window by throwing spark plugs at it at 7.35am.

When this failed, they tried to break in through the rear doors but wound up in a neighbouring Animal Welfare League Opportunity Shop.

The men stole a charity box with $50 inside before trying to get into the jewellery store a third time by entering through the toilet block.

Police allege that upon finding themselves in the KFC, the men promptly threatened staff.

"When confronted, a female staffer opened the safe (for them) and they grabbed lots of cash," he said.

Welsh has been charged with armed robbery, stealing, burglary and attempted burglary while Doonan is charged with robbery and stealing.

Both men are due in court on March 5.

"Stealing" is the actual verbiage in the statute?

I'm not sure it doesn't sound right but maybe it is.

I would of though theft would of been a better term but hey I'm not a legal eagle :D

I ask because while it certainly seemed odd for a country like the USA, commonwealth countries have silly language like that. It's interesting to me, the differences between countries.
