He cut away most of the gate, so it can still 'fire' while mostly closed. The excess gasses shoot down the tube, and blow the empty casing out (he catches in his net)

I don't think he'll be beating Jerry M. at any competitions, but it is an interesting contraption.

No, I don't think there is a purpose beyond "hey, I wonder if....."

so it's always off by one then? as it's the previous one fired that is being ejected when the gun goes off?

I always thought it would be neat to set up a gas piston that operated the hammer on the top of a single action revolver.
