Week 59: The F.A.S.T.
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 31-December-2012.

designed by Todd Louis Green
Range: 7yd
Target: 8" circle and 3x5 card (see here (http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/fast-target.pdf) for a downloadable target; this target must be printed on an 8.5x14 "legal" sheet of paper)
Start position: concealed, hands relaxed at sides (see below for alternatives)
Rounds fired: 18

Pistol begins with exactly two rounds in the gun. Draw should be from underneath legitimate concealment (see below for alternatives). Arms must be relaxed with hands at your sides (not on the gun).

On the buzzer, draw and fire two rounds at the 3x5 card.
Reload from slidelock/empty gun.
Fire four rounds to the 8" circle.

Repeat for a total of three runs (18 rounds).

Do not fire extra rounds. Shots intended for the 3x5 that hit the 8", or vice versa, count as misses.

Scoring is as follows:
Total time + 2s penalty for each 3x5 shot missed + 1s penalty for each 8" shot missed

The drill is intended to be shot from legitimate concealment or with a duty/retention holster. Even when shot with a duty holster, start position is arms at sides (not "interview" stance). Score is modified as follows based on carry method:

Concealed: no penalty
retention holster with closed (snap or velcro) mag pouches: 0.5 second bonus (subtraction) per 6-shot run
retention holster with open top mag mag pouches: no penalty or bonus
ALS, SERPA ([i]although these suck so badly, you should really get another holster), or Thumb Drive (or similar) holster without concealment: 0.5 second penalty (addition) per 6-shot run
open top holster without concealment: 3 second penalty (addition) per 6-shot run

If your useless range does not allow drawing from a holster (and for some bizarre reason you can not find a more effective place to train), begin with the gun on a table with no round in the chamber (two in the magazine). On the start signal, pick up the gun, rack the slide, and shoot the drill. Reload from underneath concealment.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

starting position (concealed, duty, open holster, or ready position)
type of holster (if applicable)
time and hits for string 1
time and hits for string 2
time and hits for string 3
aggregate score

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Awesome way to close out the year.

But 3 second penalty for no IDPA vest is sort of humorous. ;)

G19 w/RMR06 in Unity ATOM mount carried AIWB in a Fricke Seraphim from under an untucked long sleeve shirt and Gore-Tex jacket firing Fed AE9FP 147 gr FMJ.

5.87s clean
5.29s clean
4.98s (-1h) = 6.98s adjusted time

Total aggregate for 3 runs = 18.14s/6.04s ave

Did the three Defoor tests and some 1R2's before doing the FAST test; felt pretty good about the runs, but pushed too hard on the last one, hitting my first shot just below the lower line of the head box.

M&P9 Pro 5" Comp-tac paddle holster, heavy Carhart jacket for concealment 147gr reloads (139 PF from this pistol).

1) 10.01 +2 seconds for 2 missed 8" shots= 12.01
2) 7.33 +2 seconds for missed 3X5 shot =9.33
3) 7.22 +4 seconds for 2 missed 3X5shots=11.22

The first run I experienced my first failure to pick up a round from an auto forward.

Do you think the designer of this drill favors IDPA vests?

Cold conditions, 18F (but fortunately no wind).
Glock 34, SafariLand holster, Otte jacket open front
Federal 147 AE

While warming up, I kept bungling my draw, and realized that a slick surface, Vertx shirt was screwing me up -- so changed to a wool base layer.

5.11 - 1H = 7.11

Thanks, J!

Right before lunch, I verified zero on some Double Tap 200 penetrator ammo in a P30 .40, that is going back to Alaska, the first time I have shot a P30 since end of October, and I remembered how much I like a P30, especially in cold temperatures.

After lunch, I decided to repeat the FAST exercise with the P30 LEM 9, to see how big the delta was between it and the G34.

Temperature up to a balmy 28F, open front as above, P30 in a Blade-Tec with Federal 147 AE:

4.84

aggregate 14.95

Start position, hands at sides, no concealment. Holster used: Safariland ALS retention. All times adjusted by +0.50 for using the ALS.

Run 1: 5.35
Run 2: 4.88
Run 3: 5.21

Using the ALS is going to take some adjustment but it's worth it for the training practice.

I'm really stoked to see my consistency looking a little better at close to top speed. Hopefully this week isn't a fluke. I feel pretty confident with the 3x5 shots at this pace but I let there be a little hang time on the reload so I don't gamble the body shots so much.

I would be interested in what difference, if any, there is between your draw to the first 3x5, versus a shot to the 8 inch circle at the same distance? BY difference, I mean how you technically make that shot and what the delta in time is, if any, between the 3x5 and body.

GEN3 G17 w/ Trijicon HD sights; Raven Concealment Systems phantom OWB and magazine pouch; TAD Ranger Hoodie (open front). Shot cold when I arrived at the range.

6.98 (2.4/.73/2.47/.48/.44/.46)
6.25 (2.10/.8/2.46/.31/.29/.29) -1H, 1B = 9.25
6.25 (2.09/.6/2.47/.43/.37/.29)

First and third runs were clean (though the first run was clean by only the slimmest of margins). Tried to push harder on the second run with predictable results. Everything came together on run three. Spent the rest of the range session working on draw and reload drills (1R1, etc).

GJM, I answered your questions here so I don't clutter up the DotW thread: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?2751-OrigamiAK-s-Training-Journal-Mind-Driving-the-Vision-Vision-Driving-the-Gun&p=109458&viewfull=1#post109458

Learning which occurred: Poor times were due to lack luster gunhandling skills. I need to spend more time on practicing precise manipulations and slowly increase times to avoid sloppiness. With better handling I can concentrate on marksmanship like I did on the first timed run.

My first shot from the draw averages 1.9 -2.1 seconds from the Safariland 070 where I can do the same shot with a G17 from AIWB in 1.3s pretty consistently. Is anyone else training from a 070 and getting hits at 1.5s?

After shooting the 3x FAST cold, I ran a bunch of 2 shot draws on a 3x5 and 1R2 drills. I set some PRs on my FAST with a 5.89 clean (5.39 adjusted) and 5.87 clean (5.37 adjusted).
