origin unknown; popularized by David Blinder (personaldefensetraining.com (http://www.personaldefensetraining.com/))
Range: 3yd or greater
Target: ten 2" circles (download pdf here (http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/dot-torture-target.pdf))
Start position: varies
Rounds fired: 50

Dot Torture is a comprehensive marksmanship test that is easy to set up on almost any firing range. There is absolutely no time limit. The only thing scored is the number of hits you make out of 50 shots fired. Any bullet that clearly touches the scoring line of the intended target circle is counted as a hit. Rounds that hit a different circle do not count as hits. There are no make-up shots allowed; you must fire exactly fifty total rounds in the specified order.

If you have never done this before, shoot the test at three yards. If you have successfully shot a perfect 50 at three yards in the past, you can shoot it at any distance that challenges you.

Dot 1 – Draw and fire one string of 5 rounds for best group. One hole if possible, total 5 rounds.
Dot 2 – Draw and fire 1 shot, holster and repeat X4, total 5 rounds.
Dots 3 & 4 – Draw and fire 1 shot on #3, then 1 shot on #4, holster and repeat X3, total 8 rounds.
Dot 5 – Draw and fire string of 5 rounds, strong hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dots 6 & 7 – Draw and fire 2 shots on #6, then 2 on #7, holster, repeat X4, total 16 rounds.
Dot 8 – From ready or retention, fire five shots, weak hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dots 9 & 10 – Draw and fire 1 shot on #9, reload, fire 1 shot on #10, holster and repeat X3, total 6 rounds.

Note: if you are using the Q-PT target, the strings work out slightly different:

Dot A – Draw and fire one string of 5 rounds for best group. One hole if possible, total 5 rounds.
Dot A (again) – Draw and fire 1 shot, holster and repeat X4, total 5 rounds.
Dots 1 & 2 – Draw and fire 1 shot on #1, then 1 shot on #2, holster and repeat X3, total 8 rounds.
Dot 3 – Draw and fire string of 5 rounds, strong hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dots 4 & 5 – Draw and fire 2 shots on #4, then 2 on #5, holster, repeat X4, total 16 rounds.
Dot 6 – From ready or retention, fire five shots, weak hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dot B – Draw and fire 1 shot, reload, fire 1 more shot, holster, and repeat X3, total 6 rounds.

Please report both your score and the distance to the target when you post your results in this thread.

I was kind of annoyed by more poor shooting, and was reflecting on something Bill Rogers said about many people shooting better at night, because they focus more on the front sight. I am just in from repeating dot torture at 7 yards, 14 degrees F, bare hands, and my Surefire X300 (with a M&P remote tape that more reliably activates the light with my two hand grip, than the Glock remote tape) in the pitch dark.

50/50 which shows Bill Rogers knows something about shooting, and is a reminder to me to focus hard on my front sight even at "just" seven yards.

The other thing of note is that the Aguila 124 ball which mostly works in the Glock 34, but is definitely light on power, will not reliably function in the 34 with a WML attached. I had to finish up the drill with my carry ammo, 124 +P HST.

The last time I shot Dot Torture was in July, so I tried it twice this week with my M&P.

5 yards: 48/50 with a miss on Dot 6 and 10.

Went back two days later.

7 yards: 44/50 with one miss each on Dot 1 and 5, and two misses each on Dot 7 and 8.

I have two difficulties with this drill. First I have a hard time not pushing for speed on it. Even though there is no time limit, I have to make a real effort at not trying to rush through it. Second problem for me is that I have bad eye sprinting on this drill. I have a problem with eye sprinting that I am always struggling with and this drill really brings it out more than any other.

Sorry if this is more than might normally be reported, but it turns out the Dot Torture was as much a learning exercise as a drill.

Yesterday, I decided to see where the wheels would come off, and tried Dot Torture at 10 yards. Free style was fine, but the one hand stuff was ugly with just 3/5 on each of the two one hand dots. Then I decided to practice some, and was really struggling to not disturb the sights while working thru the mush on the last part of the Glock trigger.

Then I remembered Todd reporting only doing the drill clean at 10 yards with an HK45 LEM, and for giggles grabbed a P30. Went 9/10 on the two one hand dots, with the one out by a fraction. Thought, yep, the HK accuracy and rolling trigger is great for the one hand stuff. But, I shoot a Glock as primary, and also thinking of Todd, decided to try to make a software solution, not a hardware one. I spent time dry firing inside, and realized that it would be very difficult to not disturb the sights, pulling slowly through. So, I started practicing rolling through the press, and that felt better dry firing.

Moment of truth, this morning, was Dot Torture live fire. I decided to take my time, by only loading the rounds necessary for each dot (or two dots), so I could rest between strings. I did better than yesterday -- dropped just one shot on the support hand, clean on strong hand only, and thru impatience dropped one each on dot 6 and 9, for a total of 47/50.

For those that want just the facts:

10 yards, Glock 34, Aguila ball
47/50

First I got overly ambitious and tried it at 10 yards. 40/50. Not surprising.

Then got real and did it at 7 yards. 48/50, same as last time. That I anticipated and subsequently mashed two SHO shots is disappointing.

Man I am bummed I didn't see this. I was actually thinking about doing dot torture today but ran out of time. Maybe on Monday.

Last time I shot this (last quarter) I got 46/50, and when I shot it the time before at AFHF I got something in the neighborhood of 42/50. Getting to be able to call my misses.

Definite Improvement. Working to shoot it clean next time.

I thought that this drill would benefit me since there was no time limit I was mistaken!
The first dot everything was good. Then on the second dot I was like JOJO the circus boy and got excited and went way to fast and shot a big fat 0. Thus the theme of draw-fire-miss continued until I calmed down on the last two dots where I shot 100%. SHO/WHO were 5/5 4/5.

Yeah guilt as charged.:o

If I shot the Dot Torture with the PPQ I would of been at around 8 to 10 yards. PPQ is great and I've set most my personal watermarks with the gun but I just don't feel comfortable using it without some sort of gadget for AIWB (personal preference). Frank Proctor improved my grip in a recent class so I decided to retry my M&P with thumb safety as I missed the beavertail.

I have an unhealthy obsession with my M&P's despite mine breaking a number of parts. I swapped some parts and now I have a functional M&P again. PPQ is in the safe incase one day a gadget is made for it.

Sorry for the slight derail.

This was the first time I tried shooting the Dot Torture from 10 yds and fortunately I scored the best I ever have done on this assessment. I suspect part of this was because the RDS is easier for me to shoot at distances beyond 7 yds and part because I forced myself to shoot SLOWLY and deliberately.

DOCGKR, you are shooting very well lately, and I don't think it has all that much to do with the RDS. Are you accepting applications for "assistant drill of the week helper?"
