Ultralight 5.7mm Takedown Rifle Review: Dark Mountain Stowaway (https://www.guns.com/news/reviews/review-dark-mountain-stowaway-57mm-takedown)

A simple new platform from Fletcher, North Carolina's veteran-owned Dark Mountain Arms, the Stowaway system is a single-shot, bolt-action takedown firearm initially being offered in 5.7 NATO, but as it is multi-caliber via an easy swap of a bolt face and barrel, future options on the table include 9mm, 4.6x30, .22 LR, .22 WMR, .17 Mach2, and .17 HMR.
An easily packable design with a weight of less than 3 pounds (2.8 pounds for the 16-inch threaded barreled rifle and 2 pounds flat for the 5-inch barreled pistol), the gun can be stowed in two primary pieces and then easily reassembled.
The Guns.com crew met up with the Stowaway's designer, Aaron Voigt, to talk about his newest project at the recent 2024 NRA Annual Meetings in Dallas in May. If the name sounds familiar, Voigt is the brain behind such innovative designs as the folding "fifth pocket-sized" Trailblazer Lifecard .22 pistol that debuted in 2017 and the swinging Pack 9 Pivot rifle.

I like the outside the box thinking.

I have absolutely no realistic justification for one but since I consider commercially available 5.7 to essentially be reloadable .22 Mag I’m intrigued for some strange reason. Plus it looks like it has a ~$400 price tag which isn’t too bad.
I don’t think there’s enough real estate on top to run a MRD and magnifier. That would make it really handy IMO.

Last time I looked at the ballistics closely, the 5.7 from pistol about matched 22WMR from rifle.
So no sure exactly what a 5.7 from rifle would match, probably a real short barreled 5.56? Though not sure how short a barrel.

Looks exactly like what Edward Fox's The Jackal (1973) would pick if it was remade in 2024 :D Maybe somebody can figure out how to hide this rifle in a crutch!

I guess it is designed for defending your scrap wood pile in the apocalypse?

I will fully admit my opinion of the 5.7 is based on briefly owning a PS90 20 years ago. That was the general internet consensus of the commercial offerings of the time and I didn’t have access to a chrono to prove or disprove the claims so I figured “they” must be right.
Were they wrong? I don’t know. Has the recent resurgence of the caliber driven manufacturers to improve things versus what was available back then? Maybe?

The one advantage I see for me versus just downloading .223 is not having to keep track of separate .223 loads. But maybe that’s just a me thing.

I'd be interested in the 9mm. Maybe I can add a stock, as a side project. I have no capacity to rebarrel RIA TM22.
BTW, I looked it up, and the official weight of TNW ASR is 5.5 lbs. The DMA Stowaway claims 2.8 lbs. It's nothing to sneeze at. Even Winchester Wildcat claims 4.0 lbs in just 22LR (although it has sights).

Agree, would buy in 9mm. Have wanted a 9mm bolt rifle for years, just because, but would definitely settle for this.

Bud's shows 9mm versions they are just currently out of stock so I think it is safe to say that is the next option coming out. I honesty don't have any use for this but like it in the same way I like the idea of the AR7. I blame James Bond films.

Same here. At first I thought 22 lr would be the way to go, but I almost aways have a 9mm pistol on me and plenty of 9mm ammo on hand.

I hadn’t considered the pistol version but I think I can see a little more versatility with it.

Interesting, I find little oddballs like this appealing despite not really having a need for them. That wasn’t the best choice for a brace, though - the hinge hangs down so far that at some point you’re going to prang the web of your hand. SIG hinges have this issue, too. MI makes a hinge with rail and brace or buttstock that would be better on one of these.
I remember it being said my little DA Mask is rated for 5.7, but I can’t imagine it’s good for it.

What does it do that a regular pistol with a RDS won’t?

Shoot slower LOL.
With subs it will be a little quieter.
I was talking with someone the other day about it and he said that you may be able to shoot .350 legend bullets. Not sure if it would work but interesting.

Sure but for the weight and size you might as well have a four or five inch N frame in 357 or 44. Yes the ammo weighs more and takes up more room but I know which I would pick if the two were laying on a table in front of me.
What was it Taylor said, he would be happy walking across Africa with a .22 rifle and a large caliber revolver?

Realistically nothing. But with the pistol version I can get rifle length barrels so I can run it as a pistol or rifle as the mood hits me. For me it would strictly be a fun gun, not something I'm relying on for survival.

That makes sense, there is nothing wrong with having a fun gun!

If we are posting wish lists, well, I’ll nominate .32 S&W Long. :) A 21st-Century Rook Rifle. The .32 S&W Long is close to what at least one of the old traditional Rook Rifles chambered

Nothing wrong with a fun gun and it would be a lot of fun! I really wish they could integrate a magazine, would be well worth the extra cost if I was going to get one. But, that might be a bit too optimistic with all the caliber options they are offering, hard to get one magwell to feed 5.7, 9mm, and anything else they end up making. The only option would be one that could be swapped with the caliber, but then you are getting into much more cost, weight, size, and starts to defeat the purpose of the gun. Either way I'd probably get the 9mm version, just for fun shooting subs with my omega 9k.
