View Full Version : GunBroker Wants Bank Info to Sell Now?

I've had a GunBroker account for years, but I also haven't used it in years. I was thinking of selling some things on there, but now they're asking for my bank account info in order to sell.
Seems a little risky to me. Thoughts?

That must be new. I do not have (and would not have) my bank info on GunBroker. I had a problem with my account getting hacked once and it was literally months for me to get it resolved.

Don't do that. My bank info was hacked while in the custody of GB. Data breach compromised most of their secure personal information.
Happened once. It can happen again. Probably even more likely these days. I'm not sure why anyone still uses GB.

My account and routing numbers are not anywhere except my bank, and a credit card is used for all purchases for that reason. Deposits can be done via check, money order, cash, or a gun-friendly peer-to-peer.

Well, occasionally you need to sell a gun. And yeah, you could try going to a local shop and leaving it on consignment. But sometimes you want to personally interact with every illiterate Cro-Magnon asshole on the internet. So you can do things like exchange emails that contain copied and pasted sections of the listing they couldn't be bothered to read the first time. Or explain to them that you are not personally escorting the package on its cross-country journey so you don't know any more than they do as to its whereabouts 12 hours after you drop it off at your FFL.
You know. Stuff like that. You just can't get that with consignment. The gun shop hogs all the idiots for themselves.
GB like many other online 'sales facilitators' got fucked by the sweeping tax changes that require them to collect sales tax now. The way that's done is by taking the appropriate tax payment to match the sale from the seller, and the seller has to get reimbursed by the buyer. Been this way for a couple of years.
Best practice for this now is to simply make a second checking account with your bank and keep very little money in it, just make sure there's enough to cover the taxes if you sell something on GB.

This post deserves to be printed and framed.
You showed admirable restraint, though - you didn't even mention the ALLCAPS assholes or one line for every sentence, and every sentence ends with a...... Or the guys who can't read 'ALL SALES FINAL' and want to complain to you for a return about a tiny mark they could clearly have seen in the pictures you posted, and argue that a 'used' gun should look brand new even though they paid $160 less than dealer cost for it. Bonus points for the potato-cam pics they send back that can't even clearly show any kind of condition issue.

:D
Several of the gun shops around here have gone out of business. I've noticed more and more private FTF sales at my range. They have an annual picnic coming up with a member who will transfer for a nominal fee. Works for me. Of course the firearms aren't new but there's no 10% sales tax and you can coon finger the item all you want.

The LGS here is a combination of too small of a population for a decent turnaround on consignment and too bro-tactical-LARP for any items that’s aren’t the IG flavor of the month to be attractive.
So I’m probably going to pick Guns.com in a few weeks to essentially sell off the safe, save for a few longguns and a brace of complementary handguns.
Don’t want to deal with separate people for individual sales and I don’t want them to be frustrated by my non-immediate-drop-everything concern.
But I’m a fortunate that my ultimate goal is reduction, not necessarily chasing every potential penny.

I think they advertise on Guns International. I've had some luck buying and selling there but never sold anything to Guns.com.

I would create an account just for gunbroker, and make sure it is not connected to my other accounts.

This was my solution as well, once sellers of various big ticket things (rent, college tuition, etc) started charging 3.5% to pay by credit card.
Then there's the occasional seller that wants to use Plaid to process payments. Plaid wants to be able to actually log in to your bank account, using your actual login and password (actually). If I can't avoid those sellers, they get a check via USPS.

You forgot about the need to call the bidder and leave dozens of messages about payment. After two weeks he calls back and explains that he wants to pay using a Visa gift card that still has $32.73 on it, and the rest with his debit card, but won't have enough money until payday. Then he ceases all contact and never pays.

I'll add this - I recently sold an arcade cabinet (Sports Shooting USA) through ebay. I had to collect the sales tax and they asked for all my bank info.
You could always open another online bank account and use it for GB only.
Good thread, very useful info.
I only use GB to "price" what something might bring in case I decide to sell. I did buy one item there, via the "buy it now" process. So I have an account. I don't think I'd want to use it these days, based on what you guys are saying.
For me it's almost always toss-up between selling/shipping/dealing with a buyer, and taking the gun and trading it in. In the latter case it's easy, I don't have to ship ($) or eat the transfer fee at my shipping FFL ($). I did sell one on consignment, during the panic, a Glock, that I didn't lose much on. I sold another Glock, here on p-f. Traded in a few others locally, for the next hotness. Probably lost some money, but I don't have any patience, so that's how it usually goes.

If I sell a gun on GB I do it through one of the sellers that deals in large numbers of firearms and I pay the 10% commission. They produce high quality photos for the auction and handle all communication with buyers. Plus their volume means lots of visibility on the items for sale. They also provide a shipping label for me to send my gun(s) to them. It has worked out for me better than managing the sale myself and greatly limits my exposure.

This may well be the best of all worlds right now.

I think the ATF frequents the internet sites also. I had a target shotgun listed on GI and got someone asking me to ship to a residence without an FFL. I'm still convinced it was the ATF trolling for idiots. I could believe it was legit if it had been a pistol or AR, but not a 2K target shotgun.

I pretty much don't sell anymore. If I did, I'd do it on here or not at all. If it doesn't get any nibbles here, I keep it (see my M&P9 5" Pro Series, don't mind keeping that!). I just can't be bothered to deal with internet people or LGS people, as my blood pressure already is not the best. Could barely stand the LGS long enough to get my blue label purchase done a few weeks ago.
Why no, sir, I did not know that M&Ps are garbage and Springfields are way better. Wouldn't have anything to do with the Springfield shirt you're wearing or all the Springfield promo stuff hanging around the store, would it?
Christ on a bike.
Edit: Bonus that I forgot. He stopped me mid-transaction to tell me that he had a Generation 5 Glock without the front serrations! He said it like he owns a mint West German Sig with box and papers. Like he owns a Faberge egg. I ohhed and ahhed and hated myself for it. But it's the only blue label shop for over 100 miles so I'll wear a little clown nose as needed.
