Week 56: 99 Drill
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 10-December-2012.

by JodyH
Range: 7-15yd
Target: 3x5" or 4x6" card, see below for details
Start position: concealed, hands relaxed at sides
Rounds fired: 99

This was developed as a way to practice fundamentals (marksmanship at speed, draws, and reloads) with limited time and ammunition. Individual drills are shot multiple times to provide actual training benefit rather than just serving as a test of current skill level.

7 yards, 2.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
7 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw, fire one, reload, fire two (10 times, total 30 rounds)
10 yards, 3.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
15 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw and shoot three (3 times, total 9 rounds)

Either 4×6″ or 3×5″ cards can be used as targets. The 3×5 version is obviously significantly more difficult. All shots must be fired before the end of the PAR time; shots fired after the PAR count as misses.

If your range does not allow drawing from a holster, reduce the PAR for each string of fire by one second (so 1.5, 4.0, 2.5, and 4.0) or better yet, find a decent range that allows realistic training activities. If you want to run the DotW from an open or duty/retention holster, please first shoot it from concealment and then report both scores.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Start position (ready or concealed)
target used
score for each of the four strings of fire
total score

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

4x6 target
String 1: 12
String 2: 21
String 3: 20
String 4: 5

I was shooting this drill regularly over the summer but had not shot it since September. The last three times I shot it I scored 51 each time (consistency!). This run was a personal best for me.

S1: -10
S2: -6
S3: -7

No overtime shots. I suspect that some of the cartridges from this batch may have been keyholing.

I started shooting the drill again with my M&P Pro, but ran out of time halfway through. :(

Glock 34, Blade-Tec OWB, covered by Otte Gear unzipped soft shell, 3x5

I warmed up, shot string 1, had lunch, and then the wind started blowing so hard, I can't keep my target stand up.

S1 26/30, -4, all within time (best time 2.11, worst 2.45)

Chris, what is up with the M&P?

A mix of bad draws, bad pressouts, and not tracking the front sight. I think some serious dry-fire is in order this week for this guy, lol.

Ran this twice - wasn't very satisfied with the first run, so shot it again a few days later with more discipline.

Target was a horizontally-oriented 3x5 card.

First run: -4, -7(!), -3, -0 (sweet!)

Start position: M&P9 w/RMR07 concealed in Comp Tac OWB belt holster under TNF soft shell jacket firing Fed 147 gr AE9FP FMJ.
Target used: 4x6 card

Score for each of the four strings of fire:
7 yards, 2.5sec PAR: 27
7 yards, 5.0sec PAR: 27
10 yards, 3.5sec PAR: 27
15 yards, 5.0sec PAR: 9

Total score: 90/99

One over time shot on the D1R2 and eight missed shots that were all just barely low, including the first 2.5s run where I rushed and mashed my first three shots low and a goofed draw at 10 yds where I felt way behind on time and again mashed all three shots low trying to hurry...
