Hi everyone, new to the forum. I wanted to see what everyone thinks about holsters that only cover the trigger guard. Looking at one from Gunner's Custom Holsters (https://gunnerscustomholsters.com/product/trigger-guard/) for my wife. I am biased to Gunner's as I acquired my P365 X-Macro IWB holster from them and have had no issues since. However, I have no experience with trigger guard style holsters.
The design seems like it would be useful if she doesn't want to carry on her person and wanted to carry in her purse. I am also drawn to them as it seems that they would be good for throwing in a pack, as it would ensure nothing could engage the trigger. Does anyone have experience with these type of holsters? Any recommendations when using one?

Off body carry is generally a terrible idea
The raven vanguard is great for some limited uses.
I use mine primarily as an actual trigger guard vs a trigger guard holster

Raven Vanguard has some very limited use but it’s pretty awesome because you can add accessories that help it out.
As said above, off body carry should be limited, especially with a purse. A purse grab/prowl has a much higher chance of occurring than a defensive use of a weapon.

Purse, sling bag, and similar off-body carry has its limitations, but sometimes it is necessary.
Obviously, a trigger guard holster needs to be tied to something in the purse or bag. The cord anchoring the holster in the bag must be reasonably short to avoid an awkward presentation with the holstered gun leaving the bag. Holstering brings one's fingers close to the trigger and, depending on the set-up, might entail both hands having to enter the bag to manipulate the holster. Holstering is going to be a challenge under duress.
She might be better off if she can anchor a standard kydex holster in her bag, but a trigger guard holster might be workable with the above caveats.

I use something similar for my hill people gear kit bag. I think it’s fine if you are going to throw it into a dedicated pouch that generally keeps the pistol oriented properly and without other objects though if I was going to throw the pistol in the main compartment of a bag with other stuff, this would probably be fine but I would lean towards a normal full coverage holster without a lanyard.

If your wife wants to carry in a purse, help her select a properly designed gun purse with a separate and separately accessible gun compartment. Protecting the trigger area is important but so is ensuring quick access as well as the ability to secure the gun.
I try to steer women towards something with a locking zipper on the gun compartment. This allows keeping the key on their person, and locking the gun compartment if, for example, visiting the home of a friend with children. Of course this means being very careful to ensure that the gun compartment is locked when it needs to be locked and unlocked when it needs to be unlocked.
A better solution, whenever possible, is to have lockable storage for the entire purse at home and other frequently visited locations wherever possible.
Your wife will need to keep her purse under her strict, immediate control at all times. More than one child has accessed a gun and shot themselves when the child and a purse containing a gun were in the same shopping cart.
She will also quickly find that a purse with a gun is an unusually and uncomfortably heavy purse.
Although purse carry has significant disadvantages, it can do surprisingly well when compared to some other proposed designs for on-body carry for females. Keep it available as an option, but be sure she has other options.

The only trigger guard holster I'd recommend is the Raven Vanguard 2 (https://rcsgear.com/product/vanguard-2-lanyard-kit/). It's injection molded, extremely durable, and has significant retention compared to most. This is critical with so little "holster".
Bill's comments are spot on. It might seem like a small thing or minor annoyance worth overlooking. It's not. Keeping the gun compartment/pocket under control is critical for safety and consistency.
