I love 357 revolvers. Especially 27-2s and Pythons.

...or my '64-vintage 3.5" 27-2 (http://cosmolineandrust.blogspot.com/2007/09/sunday-smith-14-model-27-2-1964.html). :)

The bluing on those old pre-Bangor Punta top-of-the-line Smiths is just unbelievable. I've heard tell that a guy wasn't allowed to do the polishing work on a 27/29/57 until he had several years under his belt working on the more plebeian offerings in the catalog.

I remember stepping into my living room in the pre-dawn gloom at my old place, and that 27 was lying on the coffee table between a 544 and a 19, and it was such an oily deep black that the other two guns looked parkerized by comparison...

I wish I made more money. My 27 and Python collection is embarrassingly light.

Sell me your HD. I'll give you visiting rights.

I'm in the process of rescuing one badly abused M27 3.5. Got it from a shop that does police trade-ins. It looked for all the world like someone had held it briefly in the shower, shook it off and threw it in an evidence bag. Not a square centimeter unrusted. Had to soak it for a month in oil in order to get the side plate off.

Probably going to send it to CCA for refinishing...

Yeah, that's it. The other pic is MUCH better. Love guns with a little history.

JMHO.

I missed a six-inch M27 years ago, just before prices really jumped.
My concentration, and cash, at the time were going toward M57s and M657s.
Got an M28 four-inch and it shoots great.

What's the opinion on the new "Classic" Mod. 27's, sans lock and MIM?

They're fine. Just like any other recent manufacture Smith. Not near the level of fit & finish of the older ones. But for the price of those new you can buy a damn nice used older one so why settle for less?

"N" is for "nimble as a nail gun."

"K" is for "charisma."

If you're suggesting a comparison between the N & K frame .357's, there is none IMO.

Yeah, I'd love to have a go at solving the N vs K vs Python debate scientifically... all I would need is a mint example of each gun... make that two of each, with at least 2000 rounds for each gun... and proper holsters... plus a few good revolver focused classes so I know what I'm doing.

It would be a sacrifice, but I would be happy to make the effort.

I was strongly considering picking one up at a recent gun show. It was near mint and looked unfired. Gorgeous gun. But the price tag of $1400 put me off.

I keep a spreadsheet with a "fair market value" column, so that just in case I unexpectedly choke on my last cookie or drive the Zed Drei off a cliff or something, whoever's stuck with getting rid of my stuff won't get ripped off. I should probably update some of the numbers in that column... :o

A local dealer often has nice older Model 27 sixguns, and pre-Model 27 sixguns, as well. If I could reach the trigger of an N-frame for a proper DA pull, I would probably have gone bankrupt long ago.

It appears difficult, at least to me, to get an N frame gun w/o that damnable "target trigger." I regard it as a fairly major impediment to comfortable DA work.

Confession time.....
A local fun store, Atlantic Guns, back in the day, had a PC-13 and an F-comp side by side in the display case. I bought the F-comp, spurned the PC-13, and then a few years later sold the F-comp......
We will always be able to buy no lock, Performance Center guns with forged fire control components, right??

I do generally try to keep up with Smith revolver prices, yes.

The difference is that, for instance, nine years ago, $275 bought me this (http://cosmolineandrust.blogspot.com/2007/08/sunday-smith-9.html) (and I could have had the gun alone without the box for $225.) And when I bought that gun, it was in primo condition; that picture is after four years of shooting and the wear and tear of being used as a prop gun in the History Channel show Crime Wave (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0960750/combined).

I know, I know, but we have to have something to hold on to. I have found the key to buying nice Smiths is old people, preferably widows. I know that sounds evil, but, many of them have tons of guns & want to sell them. I'm not advocating ripping them off. I never would do that, but if you buy a lot with cash you can get some nice guns @ a great price. That's how I've gotten all my older smiths.
