Can anyone recommend a 1911 smith without an 8 year wait & trillion dollar price tag? I want work like FS checkering, refinishing, dehorning, & reliability tuning.

I've used him in the past, I wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

I would have expected him to at least remove the machining marks from the work he posts on his gallery. Weird.

We handled the transfer for one of his full custom sp101's. It was a thing of beauty.

I've owned one of his custom revolvers, an SP101, and it was flawless. I had him do a ton of work to it, including removing the warning/legal banner from the side of the barrel, and many functional items like fixing endshake, it was perfect.

I've played with one of his 1911s, and it was truly a work of art. If I could afford to have one of his custom 1911s, I'd own one.

JoJo's in Southington, CT (previously known as Josephs in New Britain) has been my go to 1911 shop for over 20 years, and I put their work up against that of any of the top builders.

This is a pair of 10mm pistols they built for me a year or two ago.

Which machining marks were those? Other than the inevitable artifacts inside the ports on that revolver muzzle closeup, I didn't see anything, but this laptop only has a 17" screen.

1911s page, half checkered grips, oval front strap serrations. Third picture from the left. Can't link.

Edit: I am on a 2560x1600 30" monitor and am using full screen to view this, fair warning.

Unfortunately, the 1911 page of his website states he is not accepting 1911 work at this time.

Dave at Defensive Creations (http://www.defensivecreations.com/) does some nice work. I've handled and shot a couple of his full custom 1911s, and seen some of his other work like the addition of a beavertail to a HP. As a machinist by trade, his work is clean and sharp. Not sure what his wait time is.

When looking for a 1911 gunsmith, I look for a guy who talks numbers.

If he mentions a radius with a number, that's good. Good 1911 gunsmiths work to a set of prints. They don't just fit parts. Just fitting parts leads to trouble, and implies they don't do the work to a set standard. You can even ask the question bluntly - do you work to a set of prints?

Chris James at Combat Precision Technologies www.combatprecision.com. He built me a lightweight full size in about four months a little over a year ago.

Also recommend Dave Berryhill, but I'm not sure what his wait list looks like now.

The Springfield Custom Shop does quality work on many non Springfield guns with a wait time that is typically measured in days and weeks as opposed to months and years.

I've been very pleased with my one experience with MARS Armament. He is not lightning fast, but he builds working guns. I would call him and chat about lead time based on his current workload.

How is your gun not reliable?

I'll agree with this post. I just got a Colt back that Rob worked on and the work is above expectations, turn around was good also.
