Are there any problems with the 3rd gen Glocks I should be aware of? I have a 3rd gen G17 which I bought in 2010. Its serial number is PCNxxx. It’s an Austrian made pistol. I am concerned that I might have problems with its extractor when I pass 1k or 2k rounds like the ones Todd had with that 4th gen G17??? Could someone please explain what the problem is with these new Glocks? Do only the 4th gen pistols have problematic extractors or the 3rd gens also share the same extractors? Should I be worried?

We're not certain.

Why worry about it? Shoot it, train with it and deal with issues if and when they crop up.

My Gen 3 EXO'd Glock 17 runs well, it has the "new 2010" extractor.

Just buy one and shoot it, if you've get an issue, deal with it.

No gun is guaranteed to be trouble free, except the ones that see no use.

What he said. LOL! I've got two Gen 3 guns purchased last Summer and in January this year. A G26 and a RTF2 G17. They are both running great as one should expect Glock 9mm's to run. (Just as well as the four Gen 4 9mm's we have ;) And there is a pretty fair amount of ammo running through all of them. So I would second Rverdi's advice. Go shooting.

There should not be such a cloud of uncertainty but in reality, that's how it is with almost any choice you make. A few recent designs have spoiled the market, me included; unfortunately only temporarily it appears.

I see premium HK pistols on threads in various forums needing breakin or being sent back to the factory. On the M&P forum, there's a board just for problems and not every gun is running fine out of the box; or they break something prematurely. Sigs have got their challenges from gun to gun. On the S&W board, one can find wheel gunners report the same. "Everybody's funny, now Glocks funny too".

The old adage of checking every weapon out carefully is as true as ever.

So how do I know if I have a 2010 extractor?

I don't think anyone knows. One could assume that if you bought a gun made in 2010 it might - but that part might have been in their supply since '09. Some '10 parts are probably fine. My six '10 guns run fine. Maybe one batch was spotty. Or is there some other tolerance stack issue with a root cause elsewhere? This could take awhile.

I was reading about reset/dead triggers affecting another gun (of mine at the time) for a long while before an aftermarket gunsmith reported the root cause in detail. Can't expect the factories to fess up completely - apparently. Haven't heard of one doing so publically in a few years.

Don't psych yourself out before you even buy the gun. A Gen 3 Glock is as safe a bet as any other.

I don't think anyone knows.I haven't seen any public info, sourced from Glock, on the issue. Most of the data is just piecing together tidbits.

So how do I know if I have a 2010 extractor? All of my 2010+ guns have a narrow middle/waist extractor, none of my 2008 and prior guns do:

I shot a 2010 gen 3 G19 RTF 2 in Todd's recent Sacto class with no problems related to the pistol.

I have a 3rd gen G17 ...

You are in possession of the most reliable 9mm handgun ever built in my opinion.

Doc - how much do you like the RTF2?
I think the RTF2s are the zenith of the platforms design to date (for 9mm). I have a RTF2 G17 and will buy on sight the next RTF2 G19 I see. New or used.

With a gen 4 mag release, they'd be about "perfect". ;)
