Looking around for shotgun “deals” I ran across a decently priced 870 Super Mag. Reading up on them I saw someone mention accuracy would be terrible using the shorter slug in the longer chamber,

Is there a bit if truth here and a slug needs to be as close as possible to the bore or is it like shooting a Special in a Mag and it’s really more of a velocity issue (potentially) causing poor accuracy? I don’t see anyone saying we should only run 3” shells in our 3” barrels but that’s only a .25” difference instead of the .75” in the title.

Ruling out operator headspace and timing issues of course…

Between the wad and the hollow base (if that’s the style of slug) I can’t imagine it making much difference. I also think, as another general rule, accuracy is better with no choke constriction. This goes for buckshot too.

I’m just a casual observer tho. Your mileage may vary, professional driver on closed test track, objects in mirror are closer than they appear, void where prohibited by law etc...
