View Full Version : Ruger Security Six "Pinto" Project

I know it is not everyone's taste, but I have always loved S&W pinto revolvers but I have never had the extra cash when the chance to purchase one popped up. I don't want to send in a S&W because I don't want to make a fake. I picked up a stainless cylinder, barrel and cylinder latch that I am going to have switched out on my old Ruger Security Six. I had originally planned to do this on my GP100, but I did the cardinal sin on project guns and shot it. It shot fantastically, so the GP100 isn't getting the modificaiton.

I am going to have a ball detent added as well and get the charging holes chamfered. Any other suggestions for modifications while it is out at the gun doctor?

Sights-especially the front sight. My recommendation is to try to locate a Millett Orange Bar.

You also might want to polish the serrations on the trigger face, and round off the sides of the trigger.

Best, Jon

Not having any luck searching for the Millett sight, but I do have a smooth trigger in my box of parts.

I have been picking parts for the -Six series for a while while trying to figure out what I want to do with this Pinto Project.

Man, I wish there was a supply of those sights somewhere. I've been looking for a very long time with no luck.

Although it's not really necessary, you might consider getting a .38 Special cylinder/.38 Special cylinder/crane assembly when firing .38 Special cartridges; you might want to concurrently mark the front sight for proper alignment with .38 (in a given grain weight) vs .357 (in a given grain weight). Ruger OEM revolver sights for guns this vintage are generally regulated for a 6 o'clock POA for a center POI with 158 gr bullets.

It's a great front sight; I'm lucky to have them on both my GP100 and Security Six.

An effective ad hoc solution is to paint the OEM sight face first with a base coat of white, then with an upper coat of florescent or neon orange, and then top it off with a coating of Dullcoat to prevent reflection/light scatter.

Your Six looks a little familiar. I have a 2.75 bbl. and other SS parts too but never got around to adding them yet.

Good luck with your project!

I have always been a fan of S&W "pintos". That said, I prefer Ruger's for my hard use wheelguns. Your Security Six "pinto" is gorgeous. I am trying to figure out how I could do the same thing with a Match Champion.....

Bruce,

I picked my cylinder and barrel up from ebay, but this website (https://everygunpart.com/handgun-kits/revolver.html?manufacturer=62) has a bunch of parts kits. I originally was going to do this to a blued GP100 but it shot too well to mess with.

The gunsmith that did this only had a two week turn around and the cost for the barrel swap and a third lock (crane detent) was less than twofiddy.

Took the Faux-Pinto to the range today. Shot a decent amount of rounds and the gun shot well. The few fliers are definitely my fault. I don't plan on shooting a lot of the .357s though this gun but they shot well. I only shot one group of 16 rounds to check POA/POI at 10 yards. The rubber Sile stocks on this gun tore my thumb up with the Factory .357 magnum 135 grain Hornady Critical Duty ammo. The other rounds were all reloads with 148 and 162 gain wadcutters and 158 grain Rainier Plated HPs. I used 3.3 grains of Titegroup in all of the loads.

Welcome to my world with three-fitty-seben....use a thumb-over-thumb hold, not a thumbs forward semi-auto hold(especially regarding the strong hand thumb....

Jon,

I have not had an issue with this load and my GP100. I think the NOS Siles on there are a big reason for the discomfort. I don't plan on shooting the Hornady CD load very often in this gun. I am going to shoot the 162 gr wadcutters or the 158 gr Rainiers (until they are gone or I find a equivalent alternative).

That's pretty slick.
Liken' on that bobbed hammer.

I've had a stainless 2.75 bbl version forever. Just something about the 'six' series.

I came very close to getting a 2.75 inch barrel for this project, but I went with the 4 inch in case I ever wanted to hunt with it.

Took off the rubber Sile Stocks and put on some ebay Jay Scott "Laminated Mahogany" stocks and a Colt D Frame BK Grip Adapter.

I am seriously considering getting some engraving done on the barrel and the cylinder. I don't know diddly squat about engraving . The little I know is that a good hand engraver isn't cheap. I saw a video somewhere that mentioned there are engravers that are using lasers to start the engraving process and finishing with hand tools to speed up the process and/or lower costs. Anyone have ideas (other than don't do it)?

I added a set of the 2 Dogs rear sights to the gun. I ran into an issue that the hammer was striking the face of the sight when I was shooting it and I had to raise the sight up to get it to clear. This moved the POI up 4 inches at 7 yards, but the sight picture was significantly better.

POI change:

129469

I sent an email to Fermin Garza (2 Dogs) and he called me within 10 minutes and suggested that I file the hammer down so that it would clear the sight with the sight adjusted to the lowest position. I have to admit I was a little anxious about doing it, but I pulled up my britches and went at it slowly with a file and got it filed down. It only took about 60 slow easy passes with the file to get it to work with no binding.

Before:

After:

129471

After talking to Fermin I am going to get a custom front side made with a brass bead threaded on. When I get it I will post some more pictures.

When I was considering having some engraving done, it was suggested that I contact Bobby Tyler at Tyler Gunworks. Apparently you can give them an idea of your budget and they can connect you with someone in their network to come up with something suitable.
