It's an Oakland problem actually.

San Francisco is over run with homeless drug addicts and thieves with a dash of violence.

Oakland has a very real violent crime problem and is actually much worse off than San Francisco (and only getting worse with the current Alameda County Soros DA and the moron mayor they elected).

You forgot the new Sheriff.....who looks like she might fit in nicely with the other two.

I think the jury is still out on her.

The last regime was pretty stagnant and just wanted to stick their head in the sand.

Plummer started as a cop in 1952 and was ACSO Sheriff from 1987-2007.

Ahern started as a deputy in 1980 and was Plummer's chosen successor and was ACSO Sheriff from 2007- 2023.

Both Plummer and Ahern were primarily focused on patrol related activities, which is where they worked most of their careers. Sanchez, the current sheriff, spent most of her time working in or around Santa Rita (detentions), which is where her focus lies.

98% of what has caused ACSO problems in the past twenty years has been focused on Santa Rita. Why? I think the last two sheriffs viewed detentions as an unpleasant secondary priority. The last sheriff to really focus on the detention side was Glenn Dyer back in the early 1980's.

Sanchez, before beating her boss in the election, was the undersheriff in charge of detentions and most of her career revolved around Santa Rita. Detentions is her primary focus.

My buddy at ACSO has been venting about the department issues for the past few years. He's a patrol deputy. He, along with every other deputy, have been working forced overtime in the jail for the past few years. In 2021, they were working a mandatory 40 hours of forced OT every month. In 2022, it went up to mandatory 50 hours of forced OT per month for the rank of sergeant and below. Add into that that most of command staff hadn't changed one bit since Plummer was sheriff back in 2007. No promotions and no movement because Ahern just left everyone in place and then when guys retired they were allowed to come back and work per diem in their same spots. Zero movement. So imagine working 50 hours of forced OT per month with no change of ever escaping it. Something had to give.

Is Sanchez the right person for sheriff in Alameda County? We'll see, but there were a whole lot lieutenants and below that wanted a change.

KevH.....yeah, I was aware of some of Aherns issues. You didn't even mention the fact that he was something of a germaphobe. Or the vendor related nepotism issue many complained about. To be fair, that particular vendor dramatically improved their service, at least to us, over the last few years.
