View Full Version : K9 Sticker on Vehicle as Deterrent

I had an idea come to mind, and was wondering if anyone else has thought of this or if perhaps this is just a flat out dumb idea. But I'd be interested to hear opinions.

I was talking with coworkers about gun related stickers on cars, and the debate of whether or not they actually entice people to break in to your car.

That got me thinking about the opposite effect. I was wondering if placing a "Warning: K9 Inside" or something to that effect sticker similar to what you see on police cars would maybe serve as a deterrent to petty thieves in a parking lot.

I get that this wouldn't shield your cars from break ins 100%, but maybe be just enough to get a guy to walk over to the next car parked over?

This probably wouldn't work with every single car either (if you drive a Fiat or Smart car it might not fool anyone).

Any thoughts?

ETA: I don't have any gun related, or anything related stickers on my car. I drive a 4Runner with blacked out windows, and I do have a Maligator. She drives with me often, but not always. I don't see anything illegal about a K9 sticker on a vehicle, but if anyone here knows for a fact that is something that can't be done without getting in trouble I'd like to know.

Imo that doesn't make any sense. No one thinks the average person keeps a dog in their back seat (when parked). Esp in hotter climates that be a dead dog.

No dog barking would be a giveaway too

As mentioned in hot weather not a good idea, also if I think like a thief knocking on a fender when I walk by would tell me the dog is dead or there is no dog if I don't hear a bark. I think it also might give the BG a way out "but officer I thought there was a dog in that hot locked up car that's why I broke the window".
the only plus I can see is if your car was parked in your driveway one might think there is a dog in the house and move on.
My 2 cents and it didn't cost a dime.

100% on cover to break in using saving dog as excuse

Thanks guys those are great points, and the breaking the window to rescue the dog was something I didn't think about.

I should have put it in the original post, but the stickers I found say "CAUTION K9 TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED AND MONITORED".

Don't know if that would make any difference.

Illegal ? No. Effective- also No.

Even on a marked LE vehicle the K-9 is in a cage in the rear seat.

Crooks and cops recognize small details which identify one by another - your 4Runner doesn’t look like a cop car to a crook and K-9 vehicles now have emergency cooling systems with visible fans.

At best cops and crooks are going to think you are some wanna be police impersonator.

The whole idea is dumb.

Yeah, I’ll put my ballot in the dumb hat.

Beyond all the safety risks already mentioned, dog abductions are a thing. Especially for “exotic” breeds.

The best deterrent for vehicle B&E is parking smartly and not having a buffet of shit visible through the windows.

Probably not as no barking. The popo stickers even feel like the are there for liability.

My friends who are K9 officers have morons approaching the cars all the time even with stickers (to look at dog in cage)

You would be better off with what I occasionally use to cover up something in my vehicle. (Only when I can't put the item/s out of sight in a trunkless vehicle and I have no other choice.)

Its been covered pretty well already.

I wouldnt have any stickers, but usually had my dogs with me whenever the weather was cooperative. They would watch for me to come back, if someone came close to my vehicle they jumped up to the window to see who it was, Ive seen people be very startled at the sudden appearance of a large dog or two right by them when walking by the vehicle.

I later added a window AC unit and small generator in a cargo box on the back for summer travel and taking the dog around town. No stickers, just the dogs. The window wasnt open quite as much when stopped, not enough to reach in and unlock it.

My Mal has been a house dog since 9 weeks, also when he started learning obedience, tracking and bitework.

From the week he was born until he came home with me he had a horse spooking CD on repeat 24/7, and then he spent a couple o years spending the night in my POV parked across the street from the local Trauma Center. Lots of random sirens, gunshots, and helo flights...

My guy is incredibly confident, and calm. A burglar would get no warning before being bit.

Even with the dog in the car, there is no reason to believe he would prevent the breaking and entering part of the crime. The other elements of burglary would likely have biological evidence...😛😄😜🤪🤣

What kind of window AC unit? Normal house one?

If you don't mind sharing I'd be interested in pictures of your setup.

Some years ago I looked at the doghouse AC units as a possibility with ether small generator or big battery bank for Rooftop tent or camping in 3/4 or 1 ton Van.

Idea with the Van was ether really big alternator or dual alternators to charge up AGM battery bank under RV style Table/bed while driving supplemented by roof solar panels.

The stickers are 100% for liability. They’re for other cops too. I’ve seen cops start to open doors on K9 cars to put a prisoner in it. Thankfully they got vehemently told to stop. The stickers and the barking dog inside going crazy are blues clues.

I wouldn’t put a a sticker like that on my car unless I actually had an insert and a dog inside. But you’d need to leave the engine running for the AC and have an alarm system with a cut out switch.

As others have said it’d be a no go for me.

Yes, a small house window AC unit, 5000 BTU. I used one from dads house first, it required a hard start capacitor piggybacked on the run capacitor to allow the little Honda generator to start the compressor while on ECO mode and use less fuel. It was an unknown quantity as far as how many seasons or hours on it and wasnt getting quite as cold, so I bought a new AC unit 1 or 2 years ago, it didnt require the extra capacitor.

I just googled window AC in vehicle, both pictures and the all choices. You get lots of pictures of real hillbilly stuff and some pretty good installs. The RV, van and boat people figured this stuff out, I just cherry picked what would work for me. Theres nice clean small generator mounts on the rear hitch, with the ac in a rear van or suburban window, and all sort of variations, a cut out in the rear door below the window on van or suburban, etc. I chose the right rear window as simplest for my use. It takes about 20 minutes to install in the spring and a little less to remove in the fall.

I researched various ways to power it, the simplest and most all around reliable and instantly available on demand seemed to be the honda generator. I get about 6 hours on a gallon of fuel running the AC. It allows me to take the dog running around town and not worry, I mostly just start it either at home or the first stop and let it run til done or home. Its good until the mid 90s, then not quite as cold, youd have to check your vehicle to see how well it works to cool above low to mid 90s. Mine was fine for shorter stops, just not for longer periods.

Nobody broke a window to save the dog, but i put a large face outdoor thermometer inside so ti could be seen and know it wasnt hot. Most people figured out what it was for. Lots of laughs, quite a few curious about it. Many walk by and just sort of curious what the humming noise is. Some dont seem to notice at all. Its pretty quiet on eco mode.

Heres pictures and an earlier rundown. https://bushcraftusa.com/forum/threads/full-hillbilly-window-ac-in-a-vehicle.228995/

They might steal your dog. You never know. A Big Mac and order of fries might change Fido's mind. After my truck got burgled, I keep a giant mouse trap in the console. I even put cheese on the trigger. Downside is I can't use the console.

For years I shared my thoughts on the topic and towed the standard instructor party line with the discouragement of plastering stickers and other advertisements on your station in life and the social order as a gun owner, CCH Permit Holder, Cop, whatever.

Now, I am of the opinion that if you’re up to no good, you should make your next decision carefully and consider the best information you have available to you before proceeding. Wanna choose my place? Ok. I don’t recommend it, and just about ANYWHERE is going to be a wiser choice. Wanna try my truck? Good luxk. Not only will every single thing on this property kill you, but I can also assure you it will hurt (badly) the entire time you are dying. No, I will not be charged. No, I will not be sued. I have zero sympathy for anyone who chooses not to read and heed.

Whatever you do, DO NOT say you were unclear as to how the occupants will receive you.

Oh……..and TikTok that shit!!!! This is gonna be fun.

Most people have never seen a dog working outside of cop chases on tv or you tube. Its a whole nother thing to be standing there when the dog launches. My first exposure was so intense I had immediate serious doubts about my plan. My purchase plans not criminal ones😂
The multiples of bruises through a bite suit are a clue.

Most of the LE dogs are on the smaller side for ease of handling / over a fence, etc.....60 to 70lbs......our boy is 115lbs @ 28" and has a mouth like a bear trap. The pressure his jaws generate just in play is unnerving some times....would not consider a serious bite situation for no money......omo.

Most (not all) working dogs I know started out in shutzhund, getting at least a BH, if not an IPO ranking. The state SME for police canine titled his working dog and competed in the World Finals in Germany with his dog wearing IPO (then Sch)-3, AD, FH, while a full time sheriff's deputy. The level of detail when trainiing that dog was INCREDIBLE. He built a wooden frame for his dog to lie in so the dog learned to lay with a stright, long body. His roots show, and we started training a donated mal in IPO.

Despite the fact the dog was bred by one of the State SME's suppliers and passed selection testing by the only Canine Master Instructor recognized by the state, my agency decided after dealing with our last primadonna handler that the canine program needed to go, and as long as the Deputy Chief was concerned we would never again have a canine program as long as she is with the agency. She retired our last dog 14 years ago, and is showing no sign of leaving.

When that happened my donated mal became a family pet. Most mals I have worked and trained were the usual "flighty-bitey", frenetic, all over the place mals. My guy at two was more laid back and confident than my best friend's working GSD. I decided Ringsport was the way to go for my smart, calm, level headed Mal. I have shared this before, but this video played a role in that decision...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbgbx-vfNDg&t=11s

My wife's year long cancer scare cut short our training, so now he is a foot warmer in the den most days. But the intelligence, confidence and decision making, for lack of a better term, the five year old Rush shows in the video is simply phenomenal.
