The shooter was finished and doing a "unload and show clear" procedure and the .40cal round ignited during the Extraction. The current theory is that the extractor hit the primer and caused the ignition.

The bullet hit the SO in his chest at a velocity that didn't result in any injury. However, a casing fragment hit the SO's right arm and caused a minor penetration injury.

Wear good safety gear!!!!

I am going to my next match in full body armor. I am thinking of this model: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=body+armor&view=detail&id=95B6B8F601DC2A18E96BDCE3CD9D161B5A001C04&first=405

I wonder how the extractor got aligned with the primer.

I have been present for one case and reliably read of others in which the round being extracted was fired by the ejector.

Any road, it does happen and you had better not have your hand over the ejection port when it does. The case I was on the range for (IDPA Nationals), the shooter DID have his hand over the port and got a ride to the hospital to have the brass picked out and the cuts stitched up. No more shooting for him that day or some days thereafter.

I'm not sure of the gun, but it's often a bit easier for the ejector to hit the primer...

How is the gun in question "unknown"? That seems like a pretty important detail since the ejector is most likely the culprit.

Moral of the story is?Don't put your hand over the ejection port when clearing, rack the slide and catch the round mid air  LOL.

I tend to agree with you about the extractor. But I wasn't there...
Not sure whether it matters anyway....I will be more aware during unloading live rounds in the future...that's for sure.

I was there in the back of the bay when this happened. Really scarey. Heard about it for years, but this was the first I have ever personally witnessed this.

I shoot with this competitor on an ongoing basis and can also vouch for his compitence and safety habits. He was using a 1911 pattern single stack 40S&W. Given that the RSO was struck in the chest with the slug I would hazard to say that the round bounced off the ejector and was pointing outward from the ejection port. I have an email out to the competitor asking make & model of the gun, if it had an extended ejector, as well as the make of primer he used. I will report back when I know.

I've switched my default search engine to Bing, starting when Google announced they'd censor gun-related results from their shopping search.

Probably the same moral for getting hit by a meteorite while watching TV in your living room.

Which cost us somewhere between 40k-60k a month in online business, depending on what numbers you look at. Nice thing to do in a struggling economy.

Same here. Only use Google for mapping now. [/drift]

40 cal 1911's are famous for this. Not that it happens all that much but when it does happen its usually a .40sw 1911.

I always retract the slide slowly and watch the live round eject. It either fall alongside the pistol resting on my straightened finger or it goes down the mag well to the ground. I hold the slide back until the SO says clear.

The competitor involved just got back to me. He lives on the NJ Shore and just got his power back.

Gun: STI Single Stack 40 S&W

Extended Ejector

Primers: Federal

This just seems to have been a perfect storm of; extended ejector, Sensitive Primers, and slightly rolling the gun to the left so that the port was up were the RSO can confirm clear & slowly retracting the slide allowing the round to slip out from the extractor and into the ejector causing the sensitive primer to ignite.

From now on I'm going to forcibly retract the slide while the port is facing the ground and then roll the gun over so the RSA can confirm clear. Even if by some happenstance the round does go off the port will be facing away from the RSO and my face (I'm ugly enough as it is).
