View Full Version : It's the second half of 2023...which 22 LR snub?
It's late 2023 and S&W and Ruger quality has been all over the place it seems in the past few years.
I want a 22LR snub. I plan to use Hamre Forge grips IWB (similar to Barami Hip Grips).
S&W 43C or Ruger LCR?

My recommendation for a 7 shot snub. Reliable if you use mini-mags. I'll show myself out.

I did this last year.
Started with an LCR. It ran perfectly but the shape of the trigger face irritated my finger so badly I had to make a plastic guard and tape it to my finger.
43C next, with trepidation because I'd had one in 2016 that was required two trips back to S&W to make it through the first cylinder.
This one had zero issues, and a better trigger pull than my LCR, which wasn't bad at all.
LCR is enough larger/heavier to matter for pocket use, but if you're belt carrying that's moot.
Sights are equivalent, as is capacity.
I would say from other threads on this that the Ruger is lower risk, and will resale easily if you don't like it.
S&W seems to have largely sorted these out, but still has QC lapses. They will-eventually-make it right.
Is the Taurus option on the table?
I’ve bought one used and one new 43C this year. I’d read of others issues but so far they’ve been fine.

Maybe the newer ones are reliable, but I have an older blued one that has had nearly every part in it replaced and it has issues reliably igniting rounds. I can't even really sell it as it wouldn't feel right to me.

There’s a great rebate on them now too.. $150!
Though personally my vote is buy all the rimfires. 🤷🏻*♂️

Are you talking about the Taurus 942?
I don't know anything about it. How does it compare to the LCR and 43C?

That’s the one. I have no direct experience with the 942, but I want one. From what I’ve seen online, similar size as the other options. Since S&W has been having questionable QC lately, I was looking into alternatives and saw the 942, and hopefully with the new direction of Taurus it may be a good contender.

I am finishing up a month of LCRs. I promised I would give them a fair chance and set aside July to only carry, shoot, practice with the LCRs. I have them in 22lr, 327mag, and 357mag. They will be traded or sold in August! It’s a personal take on them but the main contrasts I see are:
1)SIZE. When compared to a J Frame, the J’s just carry and draw better from MY pocket. Like someone else has pointed out, in a holster on my belt or shoulder holster it’s a wash.
2)TRIGGER. About day five, I started “double clutching” the 22lr LCR trigger while shooting it. Never had that problem before with the three caliber mentioned. And ever since, at least once during range or laser practice. I would always get the double clutch with the 38 LCR I had.
3)QUALITY. I know several have had problems with SW but I haven’t in the rimfire area. I have two 351c pistols and had three 43c pistols in the last three years. Small sample, but no problems. Can’t say that about the LCRs or any Ruger pistol or revolver in the last three years. This “point” is purely personal and should be taken as so. Because I’m sure the universe will smite me and my new 317 will fall apart when I pick it up next week.
I’m thinking seriously about also getting an LCR for use around water. My understanding is that it’s easier to strip and maintain than the J frames.

My hand likes my boot gripped .22 LCR better than my ex's 351C with VZ's. However, if I'd bought both of us 351's, my snub journey would've probably ended right there, I really, really like it. Now with Fed Punch, a 43C makes even more sense, but my only experience with them is what I read here. As it is, I'm still very happy with .22 & .32 LCR's.
LCR pros for me:
- My monkey thumb can ride nice and high in contact with the frame without sliding over the top like I can with a j.
- Rhett (https://demonstratedconcepts.com/) has shot the shit out of them and rugged guns make me happy.
- Polymer frame = less metal for my acid-sweat to corrode.
- Easier/lower maintenance.
J-fram pros:
- Clipdraw! 351C is ridiculously comfy in the loosest shorts/gi/sweats/scrubs.
DSG's Apollo (https://darkstargear.com/product/jframe/) (best j-frame holster I ever used) and AHolster's Pocket holster (https://aholster.com/pocket-aholster/) both work seamlessly with the Clipdraw.
That's it. I've got high hopes for the LCR Hamre Forge hook grips, but... #soon (https://pistol-forum.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=soon)

Yes, disappointingly useless; tiny profile, crappy position, zero retention...would not buy again.

My vote is for the S&W 43c. It's enough smaller and lighter to matter to me. I pocket carry in an A-Holster.
I have both. The 43c was reliable for the first cylinder each time but had sticky extraction with some types of ammo. I polished the chambers with Scotch Brite and now it extracts fine for several cylinders full.
The LCR22 wouldn't extract anything for the first 200 rounds without pushing the ejector rod against a hard object. I sent it back and Ruger replaced the cylinder. It still didn't eject smoothly and I honed the chambers and it is okay now.
I consider the role of either to be a one cylinder full "get off me" gun. Reloads can be done. I carry one speed loader and one 10 round speed strip in my pockets. I have 26 rounds on me with a very light weight. I carry Federal Punch in both. When I practice, I keep a nylon bore brush handy and frequently brush out the chambers and under the ejector star.
I also have a LCPII 22 but it isn't any way close enough to reliable for carry.

Love my 43c, had one a few years ago with problems, this one is great. Ejects well, trigger has broken in well, reasonably accurate. Just sent my LCR back, wobbly cylinder with alot of play, just seems wrong. Shooting left of hold with most ammo. Bought a new Taurus UL 3”
.22 magnum. Light strikes on most cylinders, with multiple brands of ammo, it is back at the mothership. I really like the Taurui conceptually. They are light. I love the adjustable rear sight blade and pinned front sight. I just want the, to do a .32 UL with same features.
I am hopeful for my Taurus, but so far 43c is in the lead.

Pretty sure I've still got it in a box/drawer/bin somewhere. If I find it, I'll send it to you and you can test your luck/alchemy with it.
Then you can throw it away.

My 43c was good to go out of the box. Daily carry in an AHolster in a pocket, generally as a second gun.

Why not a p365 same size aren't they?

If Sig made an aluminum slide upper that converted a 365 to rimfire…. now there’s something that needs to happen.

But not the same weight.
Pulled from online (unf no lcr .22lr for me)
The Ruger LCR is slightly lighter both loaded and unloaded than the P365, but just barely at .6 ounces lighter
But close enough?

Not sig but advantage arms is making something similiar
I've had great luck with my 317, 351C and 43C the last couple/few years.
Shooting the 43C yesterday, strings of 3-5 rounds, .30-.35 splits from 5 and 7 yards. I just love this little potato chip weight revolver.

I have 4 P365 series guns and have gone to making a chopped Macro my primary. Most of us carrying a snub are doing it in the pocket as a second gun, and a P365 carries nothing like a snub in the pocket. I won't get into the whole snub vs auto debate as a pocket gun, i'm speaking strictly to the carry ability.

Thanks this make more sense then! Never owned a snub but debating it for that purpose. Thank you!
Yeah I primary a P365XL Macro and I was curious why one would choose a snub over say a original p365. But if they carry differently that will explain it.

To me a J Frame carries, conceals in and draws from a front pocket far better than a 365, 43 etc., for me anyway... ymmv though.
642 in my right front and moon clip in my left for 9 hr's and counting so far today and it's only 2:30.

Recently purchased a .22lr lcr thanks to this thread. My index is slow vs a p365 but the gun shoots great. Split times were slow for me at .30 too but that is me.
The gun was able to hold headshots out to 15 yards easily.
I am quite impressed

If there is anything "procedurally" better for pocket carry - that covers more than weight, or size, alone - I have not found it. The farther one moves from the Model 40 (or the 42 for the weight conscious), the colder one gets.
S&W's hit-or-miss QC keeps me from getting a 43C as my REALLY old man's CCW gun...
...for now.

Yes sir, I'd add a 351C to the possibles as well, but...
We're back to reality of hit or miss QC.

How old are you now? Maybe buy a 43c now and it will give you time to send it back a few times to get it right before you become a REALLY old man. ;)

I'm still semi-spry and short of seventy trips around the sun. With the current S&W QC issues, it would be an even bet that I could pass for Tim Conway's "The Oldest Man" character by the time that hypothetical 43C was 100%.

My LCR22 is a constant companion but my LCR38 still has a place. I am, most likely, one bored night and a glass of scotch away from ordering the LCR327.
I have also been impressed with how accurate the 22 is at 15-25yds with a variety of ammo.

Agreed with accuracy. I do have a hard time at 25 into a B8 with the sights (too used to dot). But no issues shooting with it and groups well
Once really nice benefit is that it makes the p365 I edc feel like a stacatto after trigger wise.
Easy sub 3 second bill drills from concealment after shooting the DA trigger haha
