The last of the four former Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd's death was convicted in state court for his role in the May 2020 arrest, Minnesota's attorney general said Tuesday.

While a desperate strategy with the weight of the media and the state and federal governments crashing down upon him, I've always thought Thao's "human traffic cone" defense was a frail reed on which to cling. Thao might have been better served to testify that Chauvin had done his kneeling on the neck "control" technique multiple times previously and no one had died or been seriously injured.

I have tremendous sympathy for the two rookies imprisoned for the crime of being Minneapolis Police officers, but none for Thao and only contempt for Chauvin. Thao knew, or should have known, that he was riding with a loose cannon on the rolling deck of life and been prepared to intervene with Chauvin. There were certainly others in MPD and the City Government to blame, but they're not going to prison.
