View Full Version : Longshot request... Ruger plunger popper

I can't get the trigger guard to come off on my Security six. I have googled some videos and in those the trigger guard just pops off easily... mine isn't doing that. Does anyone have a Ruger plunger popper? I would love to buy or borrow it or if you have a link to one that would be great too.

The shop manual recommends using the popper.

I still haven’t gotten my latest SS out of jail yet (Mon or Tues, most likely) but, I remember using a small Phillips head screwdriver from a jeweler’s set to get the trigger assembly dropped on my SS, GPNYs, and an SPNY.

Maybe?

I've tried that... it is super tight. I probably need to grow a set and get a Derlin punch and compress the plunger and give it a whack, but I am a chicken.

Its been a very long time, and if I understand the question, I recall the manual mentioned using the mainspring strut with the mainspring captive on it to pry the plunger forward to release it.

They were made so no tools were needed to take them down. A cartridge rim would remove the grip screw, and they supplied a pin to capture the mainspring, it was housed inside the hollow grip locating pin. The mainspring strut will pop the trigger guard plunger loose.

Flamingo:

I have run into that problem before. I use a piece of brass welding rod as a means to depress the trigger guard plunger. It may take some time, but you will get it loose. Applying a drop or two od good lubricant on the plunger will help in the disassembly. If you can carefully put the frame in a vice (use protected jaws with pads), it will allow you to get more tension on the brass rod.

After you get the trigger guard out, put some decent oil on the plunger and push it in and out a number of times. I suspect what has happened is that the plunger is stuck in position because it hasn't been taken apart much. You need to manually wear the plunger in and future disassembly should be easier. As much as I love the Security Six series guns, there was a reason Ruger cut a frame slot that in the GP100 that replaced the Security Six series guns. That slot is used to address this very problem.

Let us know how you make out.

I sacked up and gave it a gentle whack with a screw driver holing the plunger in and it came apart. I got it all back together too.

Excellent news! Glad you got it disassembled and reassembled.

The Security Six series guns are true gems.

Bruce,

Do you have any experience with the old Mustang stocks for the Security Six?

I am looking at these (https://www.gunbroker.com/item/970222749).

They are pretty cheap. I am also eyeing a set of NOS Rogers (https://www.gunbroker.com/item/963919029) grips too.

I'm not Bruce, but I DO HAVE some prior experience with Mustang Grips--They are kinda' "Chunky", if you know what I mean--I once thought I'd like to have a set or two to cut down to fit my medium-size Paws perfectly, but found that not to be necessary since I can order Grips from Hogue's website that fit me like they were made specifically for me--YMMV, of course..

Still not Bruce, but I flailed around with a bunch of grips on my Security Six years ago and settled on the Rogers. I wish the same grip was available for the GP100 as the Rogers are perfect for my hands.

proper punch? No way, screwdriver all the way! :p

a 3/16 long brass punch or just a brass rod and a Delrin hammer makes this an easy job.

I had a good derlin hammer, just not the right punch.

That’s the thing with dedicated revolver shooters: all the insanely niche tools. Let me know if you ever need either a rebound spring fork tool or a ufo-shaped ejector rod wrench specifically for S&W K-frames.

Derail away! I don't have any experience with Mustang stocks, other than holding several sets. I don't like fingers grooves so I never used any on my sixguns. Same for the vaunted Rogers stocks. Most folks love them, but I detest the finger grooves. The only ones I like are made by Craig Spegel.

What I did with my Security Six was convert it to round butt configuration. I believe that years ago our Outpost 75 did an article or two for the NRA about round butt converted Security Sixes. I found a pair of round butt Speed Six stocks and ground away. The Rugers are fairly easy to shape but difficult to grind due to the through hardening that Ruger uses (which I suspect contributes to their incredible longevity). I, previously, had converted a S&W Model 19-3 that was a police trade in gun and while it took more work, it was comparatively easy because the steel was not through hardened. The round butt Speed Six grip configuration let me use the round butt Pachmayr Compact stocks (both open and closed back styles). A round butt Security Six in stainless steel was my idea of an ideal revolver. The only reason I no longer have that revolver is that my son "acquired" it from me. I acquired it's modern replacement, a Ruger Match Champion equipped with the round butt style Lett stocks. One nice advantage of doing this conversion to the Rugers is that you can always put square butt stocks on the gun if desired. What I found is that once you go round butt, you never go back.

What you may want to do is find a couple of sets of cheap wood stocks for your Ruger and start shaping them to fit your hand. The nice thing is that most of these surplus stocks are decently inletted so all you have to do is reshape them. It's not hard to do. I recently found a set of Herrett Jordon trooper stocks for a square butt S&W N frame that I reshaped and re-finished. If you need help doing the round butt conversion, hit me up on private messages and I can walk you through it.

By the way, Milt Sparks is still able to make holsters for Security Six series guns.

You don't necessarily need a Delrin punch, if the punch tip is the right shape - Squirrel Daddy's rounded punch tip is awesome: https://www.squirreldaddy.com/Mag-plate-tool-for-Glock-p/sd20-247.htm

Back in the olden days (when they were new) I had a blue 4 inch Security Six, and Mustang grips, but mine were made of rubber. I really liked them, but they're obviously different from what you're looking at. Based on my experience with them I certainly wouldn't hesitate to try the wood version out. The rubber grips had a unique way of being held together, but it worked perfectly.

I won the bid for the walnut stocks, it was $35 with shipping, fees and taxes. I am excited on getting them and trying them out.

The Rogers grips won't fit on a 150-Prefix Security-Six. That's exactly how I found out about the difference between the 150- and later versions.

That's what I did....found an oversized set that fit it and whittled them down to my liking.

Luckily for me mine is a 155- prefix gun so they should fit.

I fit the extra cylinder to mine today.

I will need to take it off to have it cut for the moonclips.

I use a flathead screw driver or Allen wrench backed with a narrow strip of leather to prevent scratches.
