View Full Version : Polo shirts for appendix carry
It seems like appendix carry and polo shirts go hand in hand. What polo shirts do folks like for appendix carry and why?

Ha! I bought this up at AFHF recently and my personal experience is that I am faster with cotton pique polo shirts over my Under Armour, Adidas, and Nike synthetic polos. In specific I have almost every color of Express (http://www.express.com/modern-fit-small-lion-pique-polo-32873-844/control/show/3/index.pro) polo made. I have some Lacoste (http://shop.lacoste.com/Short-Sleeve-Classic-Pique-Polo/dp/B000PYBWY4?field_availability=-1&field_browse=2248337011&field_product_site_launch_date_utc=-1y&id=Short+Sleeve+Classic+Pique+Polo&ie=UTF8&refinementHistory=subjectbin%2Ccolor_map%2Cprice%2 Csize_name&searchNodeID=2248337011&searchPage=1&searchRank=-product_site_launch_date&searchSize=12)ones that are decent as well. I have one or two that I got from lord only knows where to wear for work when I worked a sales shift at a garage and the cheaper fabrics just get goofy. For work I will hit them with an iron really quickly on the front, it drapes better and looks cleaner for work. This in turn also works quite well at hiding a gun. All this being said I generally wear a band t-shirt of some sort over a polo.
I feel less weird for considering (and timing) this now that you have asked.

Ones that fit....:D
All joking aside, dark colors mostly that are a sheeny material (under armour type) and not knit material. They seem to grab/cling onto my stippled back straps and grip taped frames.
I also like dark golf type polos with a bold pattern on the gun side, helps hide printing with the broken up patterns of the shirt. It somewhat provides depth/shadow.

I really like the Vertex (http://www.lapolicegear.com/vertx-mens-ss-polo.html) brand polo shirts.

I don't have a particular brand but I have a few things that I look for:
1.) - Darker colors. Just like dark clothes are slimming I also find that it's easier to hide guns behind dark clothes. Although I occasionally wear brighter colored shirts from time to time but I avoid white.
2.) -Thicker Material. Thicker shirts seem to "drape" better over my gut and pistol. They also seem less likely to print since the material isn't so light. Lighter material shirts like golf/athletic shirts don't work as well. I have a few Propper brand polo shirts that consist of a thicker material but utilize a more performance material, it's a best of both worlds. They may look too "tactical" for certain settings. Thicker shirts also seem easier to grab and get out of the way during my draw.
I have Vertex, 5.11, Under Armor, and Propper polo shirts but as of late I've been wearing Lands End polos from JCPenny's because I'm a cheap slob and my wife buys my clothes. :o
I own both Polo and Lacoste shirts, but have worn the Lacoste exclusively for the past five years.
1) Shorter even hem is good for my short stature and untucked carry (both AIWB and traditional IWB).
2) Looser fit to accommodate pot belly and full-size guns.
3) Construction is much more resistant to the effects of laundering (stretching/shrinking).
Lands' End Pima or regular mesh material?

All of my work shirts are from Land's End and work very well. They're a little thicker and stiffer than most of the cheap polos you find at discount stores.
I'd second the recommendation about dark colors -- especially on me with my gut, the difference between two otherwise identical shirts in black and khaki is very noticeable -- as well as patterns in the gun area. I've got a polo and t-shirt that have my company logo right where I aiwb, rotated clockwise 90 degrees. It's almost like putting a picture of a gun there. And while you'd think it would draw attention, they're some of the most concealing garments I have because people see the bright orange logo and stop looking "deeper."

I have a very long torso (and really short legs:mad:). Duluth Trading Company is my go to for almost all my clothing these days because they stock Tall's. They are also generally cut for wearing untucked. They make several different styles of Polo's (including full button down) in tons of colors. Duluth stuff wears like iron. When I was doing the EP stuff, I generally looked like the help while my co-workers in their 5.11 and similar clothing looked like the bodyguards..........I liked that:cool:.

Usually just a T Shirt for me. I'm not big into collars. If it has to have a collar I will wear a polo, but usually a plaid button up with short sleeves.

Express polos are a staple of mine as well. The length is great and conceals for me even when reaching for a shelf.
+1 on the Vertx and Lands End polos for AIWB. The Brooks Brothers ones have worked well for me too
Sadly these new lightweight sports fabrics that are so comfortable in the Georgia heat are more challenging for concealing AIWB or hip IWB. Especially with an RTF2 G19. Enough to force changing to a non RTF2 gun.
And its not just the drape and concealment. Heavier cotton polos are noticeably faster and more repeatably reliable for the draw and esp the reload.

I hated my RTF2 for AIWB, tore the hell out of any synthetic shirt I wore. Gen4 texture works better for me anyway and my Gen4's work, thank god.

Another +1 for the Lands End polo shirts knit from 100% Peruvian pima cotton. I get the striped ones too. The even bottom hem looks cleaner, and doesn't grab you backside when clearing the gun and reload. I've tried the lightweight Golf shirts and polos, they don't work near as well as the Lands End for me.

Pima is my fav too. If you guys have TJ Max or Marhsalls, you can get some clearance pima stuff cheaper.
*Never heard of Lands End, just checked out their site- very impressed. Custom monogramming, made in the USA products, 40% off one item, free shipping over 50$. Nice!
Well, we now have a p-f.com fashionista thread...If it is less than $80 - I am not interested, so Fred Perry for me, please.

Spot on. I have a ton of polos for tennis, and the best ones are plain unusable for a concealed carry. Heavy cotton ones work well, but since I absolutely need an undershirt for any reasonable volume of draw practice, I end up with medium-weight generic cotton polos . Heavyweight + undershirt = too hot.

I was gonna call you a snob but...
The Lilly Pulitzer men's polos are a good alternative to the synthetic shirts. They are super lightweight and 100% cotton

I got into a situation where I was AIWB in a non-permissive and very crowded environment, and stuck wearing the same clothing for better than 24 hours. I was wearing a given-to-me by Strategos polo shirt, had their logo but the shirt was one of the black anti smelly pits wicking style Blackhawk polos. Worked very, very well for me. I ended up with a few more of these. They also conceal nice for me in standard IWB.
