View Full Version : Safariland Vault Duty Holster

New for 2023 is the "Vault" from Safariland. I guess the name could mean something that’s very secure or something that leaps over the competition.
Just looking at pics the holster appears larger than anything else in the duty market. We'll see how it pans out but I wonder how comfortable it will be when seated in a patrol car all day.

“Self cleaning” optic hood sounds interesting. I like the wider ALS mechanism. The size and aesthetics are a huge turn-off though. I guess I’ll wait to see.

I'm curious if Safariland allowed for the use of larger optics, specifically the SRO, with the Vault. I know that's been an issue with the 6000 series RDS holsters and interference with the ALS lever.

That thing looks huge.
I’ll stick with my 62&6300’s.

Only available as ALS/SLS? No ALS only version?

Friggin' Robocop holster. But also a lot of one-size-fits-most...

Does this reduce the access to the trigger that can be an issue with light bearing holsters?

Yes. Uses a spring mechanism iirc to accomplish this. Notice how a lot of the blue guns used during the demos during shot are with 320s :p

Looks like it, and they also did that with the 73 series. Unfortunately, the 73 series had its own problems, causing me to go back to the 63. With the width of current lights, there is only so much that can be done, I guess, without going back to a clamshell. Possibly, if they made the holsters specific to certain lights, this cold be improved upon. The TLR-7, for example is a lot narrower than the TLR-1, but holster manufacturers, for obvious reasons, like to do a "one size fits all" approach.

The 7TS for the G19/TLR-7 is greatly reduced. I don't see anything getting to the trigger with it.

True about the reduction. The issues I had and saw were poor fit and a feeling of being flimsy. I actually got one to get around the large opening issue of the 6360/6390, but went back. When holstered, it is harder to reach/pull the trigger on my gun than on a Glock or similar. I have heard several stories of the holsters breaking/cracking but cannot prove this to be true, but Safariland specifically promotes the strength of the new holster and I suspect there is a marketing reason for that.
Safariland says the guard holsters will be available for the Glock and P320. I guess the 7TS series will remain in production.
Will it accommodate a pressure switch?
Dude....its Safariland. They will enthusiastically explain to you why you're foolish to want one.

That’s why I just walked right past the booth this year.
That’s why I just walked right past the booth this year.
My favorite part of SHOT 2020 was seeing new lights from Streamlight and Surefire, and asking if they were compatible with existing Safariland holsters, or any planned holsters. Blank look followed by "We really don't know. We haven't really checked." Pointing out that the Safariland booth was about 30 yards away so they could check was followed by another blank look. Bringing the same issue up with Safariland elicited a shrug and a "That's their problem." answer.
Blackhawk and US Duty Gear for the win.

Like others have commented, looks yuuuge. At least the ALS lever is bigger. Guess SF paid attention to everyone putting Nubs on their holsters.

I suspect that this will be huge for P320 issuing departments-or probably should be...

NOPE
I was at the press conference;
AMC & SoCalDep - I never thought I'd support Blackhawk but that T series holster is very well executed. I'd like it more if they remember the M&P exists and left-handers carry guns too.
US Duty Gear is continuing to do good things.

I get that even the name “vault” is probably designed to market to liability wary law enforcement agencies rather than individuals who want good performance - they’re probably going where the money is. I can’t fault them... but I fault them.
The T-series really is a good holster. I have a couple for Glocks and recently bought one for Staccato but I agree that one for the M&P is very much needed... and with M&P and Glock we need Surefire options as well...
That said, it accommodates the light and laser series and pressure switches, so some serious dudes who carry Staccatos with X400Gs are using Blackhawk who probably had been and would have been using Safariland.
I just need to practice the draw because it is certainly different with a safety-equipped pistol and I’m used to a SLS-style hood.

There are complaints about the number of screws in the Alien Gear holster, that came up in the press conference but Safariland said these are bolts not screws.
I've got a T series for my Staccato/light/optic combo. The draw is a bit off because of the paddles location in relation to the thumb safety.

Anyone used one of these yet? I’m in the market for a rds holster for work. I’m currently using a 7 series als only with the little als cover and may just go with the rds version. The only hesitation I’ve have with the Blackhawk T series is the needing the light attached to lock the gun in, and honestly I’m not sure how much that matters vs a nice to feature.

How often are you using a duty holster with no light on the gun? I am still using the 6390 RDS and there is much less gap in it than legacy models. I can’t it a finger in there and doubt any adult could either. And it won’t shatter like the 7xxx holsters.

That’s my hang up. Most of the time the issued work plain clothes gun is a Glock 43x with a shield magazine. The full size gun usually goes on with a gun belt. I’ve a a few occasions when I’ve pulled the light and carried the full size gun appendix. So maybe a nice’ta vs needed.

Every holster I used was from the Safariland SLS line. My first two just had the hood. The most recent had the hood and thumb lock. A never carried with the guard in place. They have high, mid, and low ride. Get at least the mid, better yet, the low ride, for external vest, as long as you can still sit in the vehicle seat, with it.

I've hopped off of the Safariland train and switched to the Blackhawk T-Series (surely a sign that the apocalypse is upon us). That being said, I've done some DIY cordura wraps on Safariland holsters and this new one would be very easy to do. Two halves that bolt together will be way easier to dissasemble than the older 6000/7000 series. If I were adopting the new Safariland vault holster and wanted cordura, I wouldn't pay Safariland the premium with this new design.
I'd be willing to bet that it is not as chunky in use as it appears in photos. It should be applauded as well that they aligned the hole pattern on this one in a straight drop and finally listened.
I’ll bump this up…after about a year plus being on the market, does anyone have any experience with this holster?

The Vault is supposed to be more enclosed around the trigger guard than some of the older designs on the market. I don't know if anyone has tested these as per the South Narc video posted in another thread.
I ordered a couple dozen of these for my old agency but retired before the order was delivered. I don't know how well these might actually work in practice. The only feedback I have is that the holster itself is YUGE even if it does offer some interesting and modern features like build-in body cam compatibility.

I’m seeing X300 fit options on Copquest. Looks like a typical Safariland snail pace rollout.

In the Southnarc thread on the WML holster issue, he mentioned his Instagram live with Pranka, Pannone and Palmer. Chris Palmer when discussing the ridiculous size of the Vault holsters said that much of the bulkiness is due to the hardware/magnets for the Axon Bodycam activation feature. I personally see this as a major problem in the profession, and it is affecting equipment design and training. The holster is designed just as much to address an administrative function (BWC activation) as it is for weapon retention/safety. While thats 'nifty' and all, if it comes at the expense of function (carrying a breadbox on your hip for 10-12 hrs, getting In and out of cars), it is self defeating. Trying to get your holster to think for you isn't gonna go well, in my opinion.

Safariland is no doubt aware of the size complaints by now. It is only a matter of time before a Gen 2 version is introduced.

I’ve got two samples coming to my PD tomorrow. We’ll see how obtrusive they really are. Thinking about pairing these with the Solis.
My dilemma is this…we’re scheduled to receive our g47/Acro package end of Sept/Early October. I want to adopt the new TLR7 HL-X agency wide, but Safariland holster compatibility isn’t there yet. It’s too large for the 7 series TLR7 lights, and there is some wiggle room (albeit minimal on my sample) using the x300 7360. Plus, one of the benefits of the TLR7 HLx is the thin body, which closes up the trigger frame area that Craig has been talking about notably on the 6 series.
The Safariland rep said the Vault will fit the TLR7 HLx, both small and large light versions, as it’s made to secure a weapon with or without an optic/wml.
However…the bulk is concerning and we have 0 use for the axon feature built in. Plus it’s ugly as hell and I can already hear the complaints. I could go with a different light I suppose, but id like to get out of the cr123 game, especially the (2) battery lights. Talking out loud here I suppose…

I'd want a Safariland holster in hand rather than trust reassurances that the holster will fit a particular light or optic.
I recall a shipment of holsters that were supposed to fit our SIG 226's with a light (don't recall the model number). The holsters were clearly designed to fit the same model light with a laser module While sort of acceptable, this led to a loose fit on the weapons. The holster secured the pistol acceptably, but the loose fir did not encourage confidence.
