View Full Version : Why I HATE pistol red dot sights…

Let me start out by saying… I am not a fudd. I realize and recognize the abundant benefits of a red dot on a pistol.
I would also like to mention that I am not a new shooter nor am I ignorant on firearms in general. I’m not a GM or shoot competition but I can shoot and pass the original federal Air Marshal test cold from concealment. Best shooter ever? Hardly! But I reckon that makes me decent.
So why do I hate RDS on pistols?
Because I have the worst luck in the world with them!.
Can you tell I’m agravated right now? :p
First ever RDS was Trijicon on a Glock 19. It WOULD NOT hold zero. Even gave it to a buddy (who is a Master in USPSA) who had multiple Trijicons so he could tell me what I was doing wrong. His conclusion? I got a defective RDS.
Ok, next up I went to Holosun. Got one, it held zero, I put in the reps to get good with a RDS. Things were great and I was finally a IG worthy “cool kid” with the latest and greatest… for about two weeks.
Doing some drill in a class I dropped my optic on gravel and the dot window cracked and ceased to work.
I’m sure Aaron Cowan is about to descend from the tactical heavens and tell me all about his drop test. Good for him, my RDS did not pass this unintentional drop test.
Bought another Holosun 507k x2 to use on a sig 365xl. This one, no matter how many times I changed the battery, would not work longer than an hour.
Now lets try a sig optic!. I borrowed one from a friend. This one was mounted to a sig that he never used and he told me I could borrow it for a RDS class. Cool! Guess what happened… the optic stopped working mid way through the class. Multiple people tried it and no joy. battery replaced… nothing. (NOTE: Sig did replace the optic but I never used it after that and I’m not sure he has either.)
Because I’m a stubborn fool I bought another holosun 407k x2. Mounted it to a sig 365xl and I have had it for over a year and have multiple thousands of rounds through that gun. Not a single problem with that optic!
Decided to buy another holosun for my new sig macro. Arrived in the mail, mounted up, fresh batteries in place and… it refuses to hold zero.
“No problem, I’ll just calmly contact Holosun and see what they have to say.” I thought to myself.
Log onto Holosun “state of the art website” and click on their “contact” button.
Name: *check*
Email: *check*
Phone number: *check* (even though it was optional I was feeling nice)
Message: Typed and fully explained.
Click “submit” only to be presented with a nice “error” page.
Try again…
“Error, message not submitted.”
Et tu, Holosun?
There are an awfully lot of benefits to red dot sights but I think I’ll just stick to irons. At this point I dont even want to carry the sig with the one working optic because I just dont trust it.
You all enjoy your red dots, I guess I’m going to go hang with the retirement folks, shoot my irons, and complain about kids being on my lawn or something.

Did you quit on Trijicon after the one? Did you reach out to their CS? I really like some of the Holosun offerings and am all in on them right now but I don’t expect any of mine to take a bad fall.
Are you sure the zero things aren’t platform related? I don’t know anything about most of those but I’d blame the MOS system on my Glock before any of those dots probably.
That said, I’ve broken a Razor 1-6 and had a defective KAC, Geissele, and maybe now BCM (need to troubleshoot more) uppers from the factory. Sometimes it happens.

To many people rocking Holosuns on their sigs for me to expect the gun is the problem. And the one optic I have that works is on a sig and I have 0 problems from it. But one out of six just arent good odds for me.
And no, I never did contact trijicon. Back then I wasn’t that worried about it. Figured I would just try another offering from another company.

That sounds discouraging for sure. Still, the benefits to my accuracy are so stupid over irons that I wouldn’t quit on them. YMMV obviously.

With all the competition between RDS companies, and the continual explosion of growth, I anticipate that the technology is going to keep getting better. I’ll come back in a few years and try again.

I haven’t had any Holosuns fail to hold zero.
I wonder if your screw length is an issue. Just because Holosun provides screws doesn’t mean they’re suitable for your application.
A screw that bottoms out will allow micro shifts in the optic and feel like a failure to hold zero but it’s just not properly mounted.
Right Clusterfrack ?

I’m going to check that!
But I’m not sure thats its because its not “micro shifts” in the zero. The zero is drastically different than where it should be and when i readjust it, it will quickly go to another new drastically different spot.
Worth checking though so thanks for that tip!
That is bad luck. As far as slide mounted pistol optics since 2010 I am 0/3 on Vortex, 3/5 on Trijicon, 1.5/2 with Sig, 2/2 DPP, 5/5 Holosun.
Dang, if I had your track record with red dots I’d be against them as well. But, fortunately I haven’t. The six or seven I own have run well. Well, there was this one, but it doesn’t have a very good rep. That one was semi-permanently loaned to a shooting buddy who wanted to try out a red dot, and he hasn’t complained about it...

No, the physical optic body will shift and it’s sometimes hard to tell from the outside.
But it’s markedly different of a zero like 6-10” sometimes.
Basically take the optic off and hand thread the screws into the plate.
Make sure they’re the right pitch and double check the length isn’t too long.
If it is, grind down the ends of the screws with a file or a Dremel.
This is a common thing with Holosuns and some of the P365s, IIRC.

Everything looks fine to me.
I’m going to try calling holosun tomorrow. If they want to take a look at the RDS and either fix it or replace it then I’ll give it another shot. Otherwise I’m just going back to irons.
While I shoot better with the dot it’s really not worth all the money or hassle.

There is a learning curve to mounting and using RDS as well.
But IMO, after picking up that knowledge and familiarity it’s a piece of cake.
I’m probably 80k+ rounds on RDS pistols and have only had one brand of optic actually fail.
Everything else has been a function of mounts or batteries and not the optic itself.
Optics have gotten a lot better. My wife and I broke +/- 32 Delta Point pro optics, working out the fix to them.
Early on, a significant percentage of Holosun optics broke out of the box. Much less now. I don't see them losing zero.

I haven't had that issue but if I did I would be frustrated as well. They truly are a great tool if they work. I make sure I follow other people recommendations for mounting. My 509t mounted very easily.

This is how I ended up in Limited in 2018 after I decided that Production was over. I went through 4 DPPs in three months and said fuck it, I needed irons. But red dots are getting better very quickly. It is a future, don't get discouraged.

I remember those posts. Is the DPP solid now or is it still not GJM proof?

They did fix the problem, which was an undersized decal. The DPP was great technology circa 2015, but is has been obsoleted, and I haven't shot one in a few years. It is unusual for me to see others shooting them in USPSA these days. I really don't know if they are holding up -- I don't hear complaints, but so few are shooting them.

Most common reasons that optic wont hold zero:
Screw too long
Screw too short
Factory slide cuts and some adapter plates have too loose tolerance in front of the optic, putting all the stress on the screws. This is more of a problem with the smaller RMR screws.

After being an early adopter, and having a lot of similar issues, that was my conclusion until fairly recently. I absolutely hate equipment that isn't reliable.
As JCN alluded to, I recently had an EPS that wouldn't hold zero, and the solution was grinding 0.10" off the screws. But seriously, we shouldn't have to fiddle around with bullshit like sub millimeter variation in screw length on firearms that will be used for life safety.
Here's what's been trouble-free for me: direct mill for Holosun 509t2 and Acro. No plates. No screws. No fiddly bullshit.

Update: took my gun and optic to a gunsmith my friend knows. He also has several optic pistols, EDCs an optic pistol, and competes with an optic (A class).
Told him that people on the internet, whom I respect, told me about the screw length issue and that while I didn’t see any issue I’d like a second opinion.
He looked at, removed it, remounted it, zeroed it and shot it. I took him out to eat and when we came back we shot it again. Same problem.
He looked at the gun and determined that it’s likely the optic. I told him my history is optics and the run of bad luck I’ve had. Amazingly enough he said that he refuses to buy another trijicon because out of the four he’s bought only one worked and he didn’t even like it. Doesn’t make me feel much better about my run of bad luck with holosuns though.
Anyways I then had an idea…. Since buying new optics just don’t seem to work for me (minus the one I have that actually works), I’ll just buy proven used ones from people I know!
I’m going to see a friend tomorrow to buy a holosun 407k x2 that he bought new 8 months ago. He’s shot around 4k rounds through the gun that optic has been mounted on and he’s never had a problem with it. He wants to upgrade to an EPS and I want a proven optic. Deal was made.
We’ll see how this works…

That’s crazy. I almost felt bad selling my RM06 because it was a type 1 and was completely reliable for several thousand rounds even though many people had issues with the type 1s. I kind of wanted to keep it even though I had no plans to use it again.

Most optics eventually wear out when mounted on a slide. The flip side, is there are some new optic issues related to out of the box failures, or mounting issues. At 4,000 rounds, you are giving up a significant amount of the useful life of that optic. Pick your poison.

You aren’t wrong but to keep buying optics that, for whatever reason, jus doesn’t work for me just seems insane. I’m going to drop $70 on this and risk it.

My first slide mounted optic was on a Glock 19 cut and originally mounted by Mark Housel. That was 2010. It still works today after untold classes and about 80,000 rds. It is a type 1 RMR.

I use C-More Red Dot Sights and have never had one go out of zero after shooting hundreds of thousands of rounds. If you decide you are having too much trouble with your optics get a GREEN Fiber Optic and live with it. The green is the first color the eyes pick up and stays bright even in a low light indoor shooting range.
Last month I switched to irons for Steel Challenge and shot better than my optic average. That sight never moved and I was able to pick it up much faster.
BTW I've been shooting dots since the 70 and really believe in them. My first Vortex Venom had the same problem you describe. I sent it back in three times before I asked them to replace the sight with a Viper. No problems with the Viper on any of my guns.

Update: the 407k that I got from someone works good so far. Mounted, zeroed, and did my own little “drop test” by tossing it on the bed multiple times. Don’t really trust dipping these on the ground but if they can’t survive being thrown on a bed a few times, I don’t want them. BUT, the optic had no problems and maintained zero.

Appreciate you letting me know but I’m done with holosun as a company except for buying slightly used optics from people. I was finally able to get an email through to them and 48 hours later no answer. I shouldn’t have to hear about their FB group by sheer luck and then have to go through all that BS just to talk to them. Bad customer service! But still, thank you for trying to help me though!
FWIW, I had good luck with Trijicon’s customer service. I called them last spring when one of my SROs died (after 3 years of comp shooting) and within the hour had an email with RMA to ship the RDS back to them on their dime, and within 5 weeks had it returned to me. I was quoted 6-8 weeks. The paperwork said they replaced the electronics plus for some reason they also replaced the lens.
A year or two ago I called Trijicon about a replacement o-ring for the SRO battery cap. I mangled it replacing the battery and was just looking to buy one. They sent me one for free.
So I’m pretty happy with Trijicon’s products and CS.

I’m in the same frame of thought after seeing a couple 507Ks go down. There was clearly a HS issue, and they refused to warranty it.
That said, apparently Big Tex Ordinance will handle the warrant mess for you if you buy an optic from them. I’ll be going through them from here out. I’ve got a 507C x2 that’s lost some of its brightness, so I may try out their warranty.

Good to know; thanks!
So, put 300rds thought his new (to me) optic this morning and its good to go.
My 365Xl and 365xl-macro now have seemingly reliable optics on them. I have another macro coming soon but I’m going to leave that one stock. Probably leave my regular 365 stock too so its as small as possible for the rare time I want something tiny.
Might go ahead and buy a sig optic for my P320 and give sig a chance.

I had issues with my OEM SIG Romeo1 on my P320 RX X Carry during a match; it initially would work, and then go out, and then come back on, and then off. SIG was great about it-they had me send the old one in on their dime, and replaced it with a Variant 5 Romeo1, which has behaved impeccably to date.

I've been on an optic buying spree lately. I have five recent mfg. Holosuns and one Sig optic that I needed to buy with the pistol to get the version I wanted of the P365XL with a dovetailed rear sight.
I don't have particularly bad luck, but I do use my stuff and some of it breaks. Of the six optics, three have failed in some way in <2K rounds, usually less.
The Sig Romeo 0 Elite in my opinion is hot garbage. Didn't last 200 rounds. Won't use it again.
The Holosuns have been okay so far. I have one SCS that won't turn on or off any longer (activation button is kaput) on its way back to California now and a 507C that randomly and momentarily flickers on/off that I've got to drop in the mail too. Both would've been fine if I needed to shoot them, it's more annoying issues than complete failures.
I've had some zero issues but all related to the mounting, not the optic itself. For me the screws haven't lasted thousands of rounds without loosening. So, I need to check them often and re-loctite. Many of the Holosun screws need filed down to fit properly.
I'm still mostly sold on slide mounted RDS, but I do think evolution is needed in mounting systems.

For those who fully embrace the dot life, I get it, they work for you. With that said , I'm not looking to be corrected on how my experience is invalid.
Trijicon RM06C: Flickering / power loss issues. Yes they have a warranty, but I couldn't hold the warranty card up to the problem.
Trijicon RM06C: Yes it has drain holes. The holes didn't drain, presenting a lens full of red.
Trijicon RM05G: Large snow flake landed on emitter, presenting a lens full of diffused red. I know, I know one in a million, except it happened multiple times that session.
Holosun: Don't recall what model. Wouldn't hold zero. Yes they have a warranty, but again I couldn't hold the warranty card up to the problem and make it go away.
All the above were installed properly by me.
SIG Romeo Zero: Emitter could be seen bouncing in recoil, and settling in various spots. Not mine, appeared mounted properly.
Various general issues:
Fogging, happened multiple times with the RM06C, RM05G, RM01, Riton MPRD, Swampfox Sentinel M.
Auto bright: Various auto bright issues with RM01, either too bright, or too dim for light / target combination.
I have never had properly installed irons disappear. Can't say the same for dots.
I'm not anti dot, but at this point in time they don't serve me well.

As a add on to the post above…
I’ve posted about my experience with red dots in a few places and I’ve had several people reach out to me telling me about how they have also had a ton of problems but that any time they speak up they get so much hate.
Thankfully, the posters here are more mature and respectful.
I will say that in some ways it’s like a cult for some people. Go to Reddit and post something bad about RDS and watch the absolute hate you get as if somehow your opinion is insulting their very life. Ridiculous.
All that said, can’t wait to see how the technology improves in the coming years.

Zeroed it back up and we’ll see how long it last.
UPDATE: The 407kx2 on my 365xl-m was out of zero this morning.

You should consider investing in a Wheeler laser bore sighter, which will allow you to regularly confirm zero (or at least to within an inch or two at 25 yards). If you report the optic is off two inches the next time you shoot, you may have some (trigger) explaining to do!

I have something similar. I could tell the optic was off as soon as I got a sight picture. Tested it, sure enough it was off.
Put 150rds though it and it held zero, Will test again tomorrow.

Do you think you bumped the slide and optic against something?
If not, unless I could come up with an explanation for the loss of zero, I wouldn't trust that optic. I would also be checking it with the laser boresighter frequently.
